The 80th General Convention of the Episcopal Church
I note that last week's Banyan Tree featured Rev. Jenn's reflections on General Convention. Here are mine in brief. I, too, hope we will have an opportunity to share more about General Convention with the Holy Nativity ohana in the near future.
Love wins! After decades of internal fights, the Episcopal Church gathered at its 80th General Convention was united in moving forward in love and justice, embracing our diversity as God's gift.
The Convention accomplished much more than I expected despite its condensed schedule. That was due to both excellent leadership at all levels and the aforementioned unity.
The torch of leadership was passed to a new generation who are more than ready to lead us into the future that will see the Church witness to God's healing and reconciling love in ways I cannot now imagine.
In a time when rancor, resentment and division seem to rule the land, we lived a reality of love, mutual respect and appreciation for all God's people.
We committed ourselves to serious work of racial healing, redemption and reparation. That has implications for us in this diocese that I hope we will be willing to explore.
The Convention voted to include an office and staff position for the Episcopal Church focusing on women and LGBTQ+ people as the Church has had offices focusing on racial and ethnic minorities in the Church as essential to the work of justice, equity and inclusion.
Feel free to be in touch with me if you would like to know more. I will next be at Holy Nativity on August 14th, and look forward to sharing more then.
Aloha
Kahu Alison
