Aloha Banyan Tree Readers:
June 1971 I received a phone call from a girlfriend in Texas. She had just been asked to come to Oahu to house/dog sit. Did I want join her on this venture??? The farmers daughter from Mediçine Lodge, KANSAS received approval from her parents. I had just graduated from Wichita State University with an Art teacher degree so this was the perfect gift. Little did I know that I would never return to KANSAS but to visit.
My boyfriend came over to Oahu after getting out of the Air Force in Kansas. We were married here on Oahu at St. Clement’s Church in 1972. We make a great team. We both love to travel, golf, and play darts. Bob even helps me untangle jewelry when I bring it home to clean and price for the Thrift Shop.
I have taught art on the island for 36 years. Kailua High School, LaPietra (Hawai’i School for Girls), and Iolani School. During my teaching, I received my Master’s Degree in Education. I did take a break in teaching before I joined the faculty of Iolani for 28 years. Sales was giving me a calling! I worked as a sales representative for Proctor & Gamble, sales supervisor for Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation, and sales for Jim Slemons Wine Company. I loved sales and am glad to have the challenge to put my experience to work at the Thrift Shop.
When I retired from Iolani, we moved to Hawai’i Loa Ridge. I started substitute teaching at Holy Nativity School. One lunch hour I walked over to visit a friend, Marge Grune, who suggested I volunteer at the shop. I have been volunteering since, going on 5 years. I love working with all of great personalities of the volunteers. They make the shop a special place for the customers. The people who donate their treasures help to make the shop successful. We all need to show love and concern for others. By working at Holy Nativity Thrift Shop, I feel closer to the community. With Covid everyone needs more help than ever. I find it so rewarding to see the smiles on the volunteers and customers faces. I am most excited to see the shop continue to grow with more volunteers and customers. The church is fabulous to give the shop support and strong encouragement.
Please feel free to visit the shop soon!!!
With Holy Nativity love, Cheri Lee Keefer
