Around 1952 still in the infancy of the new mission, which would be named Holy Nativity, the parish was growing very quickly, and particularly for families with many children. The community of Aina Haina was growing by leaps and bounds, and Holy Nativity was an anchor for young families.
As the mission became a dedicated church in September 20, 1954, my father, John Morrett, it first rector, was already dealing with a large group of parishioners and their children looking for places of activity. One popular activity, was the choir. In his book,
soldier, priest, he states that “about this time we were registering 600 to 700 children in Sunday school and the day school was pushing 200. Our children’s choirs numbered over 60 and I personally focused attention on a group of 30 young boys, who sang in the choir and were called “God’s gang“.”
But there were actually four separate choirs that Mrs. Minville, the first choir director, managed. Gods Gang was only one. There were the Cherub Choristers, a Keiki choir, and the adult choir. I must have been part of the Keiki choir and have a picture somewhere of us all in our red choir robes looking colorfully cherubic! It actually inspired me to sing in choirs my entire teenage life. Though I was not technically part of God’s singing Gang, the moniker stuck on most all of us involved kids and put an exclamation point on the other Holy Nativity nickname : “Church of the Holy Activity”!
