A Moment to Decide

 A message from Rev. Alison

A hymn from my youth has been running around in my head these past weeks, “Once to Every Man(sic) and Nation.”

Here is a link.

https://youtu.be/t_WItoVqR4w?si=DrEBQnuzIQnW83TO

As a cradle Episcopalian of a certain age, I grew up with the 1940 Hymnal. During the liturgical renewal times of the 1970’s, it was replaced by the 1980 Hymnal which we still use in the Episcopal Church along with various supplemental hymnals.

A committee developed the 1980 Hymnal and added new hymns. They also eliminated old ones including “Once…” They had reasons for that which made sense at the time - sort of -, but I still

miss it.

On my departure from the CES churches on the Windward side last February, friends from

St. Matthew’s gave me a 1940 Hymnal which reunited me with that hymn, and as I’ve sung and listened to it again, I believe it speaks to our times in ways it did not 50 years ago.

I looked up the author, James Russell Lowell. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Russell_Lowell

The lyrics of the hymn are parts of a poem he wrote in 1845, “The Present Crisis.” He was an American Abolitionist, and the evil he was warning of in the poem was the admission of Texas to the Union as a state. That meant the addition of a huge slave state to the nation, and perhaps he saw that it would force a choice upon the country, would we be slave or free. As we know now that choice led to the Civil War. Arguably that choice has not yet been fully resolved, and it fuels our

current crisis.

As we come to the end of Lent and move into Holy Week, we will also be facing choices large and small about how we conduct ourselves as citizens of the United States. Which side are we on? What are the duties of this generation?

The 1980 Hymnal committee did not want to believe there could be such stark choices between good and evil, truth and lies, light and darkness. I did not want to believe that either. I see that sometimes that is the case.

Jesus made his choice ultimately in the Garden of Gethsemane. What choice will we make?
