Good Friday Vigil

Many churches observe a vigil on Good Friday each year. Individuals or families stay in the

nave near the reserved sacrament of bread and wine, which are not used on this day.

In some cases, the vigil extends through the night, beginning at the end of the Maundy Thursday service (where we remember Jesus’ Last Supper with his friends and his arrest in the Garden of

Gethsemane). The vigil ends as the last Good Friday service begins in the church.

For those who participate in this ritual, it is very meaningful, even as people observe the time

very differently. Some choose to contemplate difficult issues, such as our sinfulness or our

mortality; some think about the sacrifice of Jesus. Others observe a time of silent prayer,

inviting Jesus to speak to them in a time of quiet.

This year, we invite people to sign up for any

thirty-minute or one-hour session in the nave on

Good Friday between 6am-11am or between 12noon-6pm. (We will have Good Friday services in the Nave at 11am and 6pm.)

If you would like to participate in the vigil, please

contact Athena DeRasmo in the

church office at hncparish@gmail.com or call her at 808 373-2131.

During the vigil, bring along your prayers, a

book or art journal, a topic to ponder or talk with God about–or whatever is helpful to you to be

still and have a quiet heart.

Please let Rev. Libby or Rev. Jenn know if you have any questions.
