Homeroom Homily

In our first, second, and third grade religion classes we are looking at courage. Many of our young students told me that courage is when you do something even if you are afraid to do it.
In class we read a beautiful book, I Can Learn to be Brave, by The Rt. Rev. Mariann Budde, Bishop of Washington, D.C.
In the story, a cautious young girl finds a friend who encourages her have courageous adventures: climbing a hill, swinging on a rope, and climbing a tree. She learns that being brave is just about taking one step at a time. Both girls are enriched by the experience of doing things that are brave together.
Some of us may be cautious and some may be risk takers. The students and I agreed that itʻs a gift to have all kinds of people with different comfort zones, some who help us have courage to try new things, and some who help us stay safe by weighing risks carefully.
We (HNS) will be reading stories about people who did courageous things because of their encounter with God, and trying to understand all of the emotions related to
courageous behavior.
