A Visit from the Bishop!
This past Sunday 8/24, our bishop, the Rt. Rev. Bob Fitzpatrick and his wife, Bea, visited us at
Holy Nativity and led the morning service. Our official bishop visitations happen every 18 months or so. They are opportunities for our bishop to hear from us about the joys and challenges of our many ministries and for him to speak specifically to us, as well.
Our musicians came back from their summer break early to provide special music. Warm fellowship and good food were enjoyed by all at the lunch after church.

Where is She Now?
Our own Julia Yamaguchi (parents Gretchen & Eric) graduated from college* last month in Tokyo, Japan.
She majored in International Relations. Julia has been home in Honolulu for a few week, but returns soon to her university in Tokyo to continue her education in a master's degree program.
Congratulations, Julia; it was great to see you!
Sending our love and aloha on your next adventure!

Another Visit!
The Reverend David Gierlach joined us for worship and fellowship on Sunday, August 3. He preached the sermon, assisted with communion, and joined in our celebration of high school graduates, who are headed off to college this week.
(Rev. David served as the Rector of St. Elizabeth's for 14 years before his retirement in October 2023.)

Why Can’t You Wear White After Labor Day?
Why do we have this old-timey rule?
One theory about wearing white is simply that
it’s cooler!
Back in the day, before air-conditioning, wearing white helped folks to keep it cool. White reflects the sun instead of absorbing it. Also, at the end of summer, privileged folks on the mainland who vacationed by the seashore would return to the city for work and school. Returning to city life (often dirty) meant that dark clothes returned, and that whites were no longer practical.
Nowadays, and certainly in Hawai’i white clothing is and has been enjoyed year around, for quite a while. We have lighter fabrics, and clothing is generally more casual and comfortable –
Island style.
So what happens (in Hawai’i) to mark the change that comes after Labor Day?
Something special in Hawai’i is the whale migration from late autumn to spring.
Our plants don’t go bare, but many flowering plants do lose their blooms.
Winter swells return, and so do wetsuits!
There are significant shifts in agriculture & aquaculture.
In Hawai'i, like the mainland, the sun rises later and sets earlier – but we no get lolo
Daylight Savings Time!
While the mainland is really bundling up, we might put on socks, get out that sweater or put an extra blanket on the bed -- and the A/C is defiantly off!
The Kōlea, or Pacific golden-plover, migrates from Alaska and Siberia to Hawai'i for the winter, a journey of about 3,000 miles!
When much of the mainland gets barren,
Hawai'i gets more GREEN!
~~~~~
So, wear your white and have a
Happy Labor Day Weekend!
Lucky we live Hawai'i.
