In our Advent chapel at HNS last week we heard the story of the angel Gabriel who comes to visit Mary to tell her that she would become the mother of Jesus. Gabriel promises that Godʻs power will surround her like incense, and that Jesus will be holy and called the Son of God. I imagine that Mary is comforted by the thought that Godʻs power would be all around her, especially as she gives birth to a holy child who would be called Godʻs Son. Itʻs not easy being a new parent, and to also be the mother of Godʻs Son? That sounds quite intimidating. Even so, Mary agrees to the plan, trusting Gabrielʻs words of assurance.

What form would Godʻs power take, a power that would surround Mary like incense? Our gospel for the Fourth Sunday of Advent will give us a glimpse of what that power would look like. It is a foreshadowing of Jesusʻ ministry, and is not a power appreciated by those in charge, the leaders or rulers of the time. No. The power surrounding Mary is revealed when she visits her cousin Elizabeth. Two pregnant women, powerless by the worldʻs standards, are filled with Godʻs Holy Spirit and proclaim Godʻs mercy and justice for the poor and lowly. Godʻs power surrounds them and prepares them to be mothers of two holy men; even though their future includes suffering, they declare how they are always blessed by God.

As we draw near to Christmas, may you know Godʻs blessings and feel Godʻs presence surround you with a power beyond the worldʻs fleeting power. And if you are suffering, may you know that Godʻs presence never leaves you.

May you know Emmanuel, God with us.
