Homeroom Homilies
by Rev. Jenn
How can God take care of all of us, there are so many people and only one God?
The first grader who asked this question gave us an opportunity as a class to talk about how this might work. After all, it is hard to imagine that God can take care of every single human, and every single animal, and every single plant here on earth. And what about other life on other planets that God made, who knows what exists in places we don’t even know about? Itʻs a little overwhelming to think about.
Students had some ideas:
God has superpowers and that helps him.
Godʻs eyes are magic and he can see everyone all at once.
God has helpers, like angels who help him watch out for everyone.
The truth of the matter is, I donʻt really know how God takes care of all of us, Jesus just told the people who were listening to him teach that this was true. He said, “Take a look at the birds in the air. They donʻt plan a future for themselves, and yet your Father in heaven feeds them.”
However, as I write this, the last answer the first graders offered made me think, hmmm, maybe I do know how God takes care of us. The truth is I do believe God has many helpers to watch over the people, the animals, and the plants. And those helpers are all of us. I asked the students: “What do you think, are you all Godʻs helpers?” That seemed like a pretty good idea to them. We all bring our own special gifts to help God help one another.
Whatʻs your gift and how can you help?
