Backpack Ministry
Last Sunday, we blessed backpacks from the BacPac Project, a ministry of The Episcopal Diocese of Hawaiʻi.
Through this ministry, those who have been newly released from prison are greeted by someone who gives them a backpack with essentials like hygiene, snacks, linens, and personal care items.
This small gesture can mean a lot to someone who may have little to no support when they leave incarceration.
Churches around the diocese help pack the backpacks for the program and are asked to bless them before they are given.

Wailupe Stream Meeting
Holy Nativity hosted a public meeting on Wednesday July 16, 6-7:45p, at which the Army Corps of Engineers and the City and County of Honolulu introduced a study on the flood risk management of Wailupe Stream. The study is underway and the team is currently assessing the issue.
We are hopeful that there will be more meetings in the future. Updates will be posted in this newsletter.

Who’s in the Pew?
Eva Eglinton
Eva Eglinton, our former Junior Warden, is a pilot with a long career in which she has flown a variety of planes and also acted as an “expert” in court cases. She is also the mother of two, Brenden and Brooke, and lives in Hawaii Kai.
In the early nineties, Eva flew a very unusual seaplane. It was a Grumman Albatross which had been mothballed, but then it was retrieved to be entirely refitted as a plane to land in the southern Philippines, where it would pick up a cargo of tasty fish and deliver them fresh to various Asian markets. The real work was done in Santa Barbara, where Eva joined the plane and was responsible for getting it registered with the FAA.
Finally, it was time to deliver the Grumman Albatross to the Philippines. Eva was the First Officer. Just five hundred miles out of the Big Island of Hawai'i, one engine of the seaplane failed. The seaplane was able to be put down in the water, but it sank. Eva was able to radio to the Coast Guard the latitude and longitude of their location; however, no helicopter could reach them. A container ship was contacted and directed to rescue the flight crew from the sea.
For 24 hours Eva and the crew bobbed around in the water, waiting for help. When they finally saw the ship coming toward them, it became increasingly scary. The ship was huge and the plane’s crew were just the tiniest specks in the water; would the ship strike any of them? No, it had been reducing speed for hours and stopped before reaching them. A lifeboat was lowered, but in the rolling seas it was hard to crawl on to it. Further, lifeboats are meant to be filled with people and then lowered into the water. They are not designed to be filled with people and then raised safely to the deck. It was another terror-filled event. The plane was lost, but the crew was safe—and the story was carried on CNN!
Eva moved on and worked as a pilot for Northwest Airlines where she was part of the first all female cockpit crew to fly from the
United States to Japan (see photo above).
After retiring from a twenty-five year career with Delta Airlines, Eva is currently having fun flying inter-island in Hawai'i for Mokulele Airlines.
(as told by Jean Steele)
