A note from Rev. Alison:

I wanted to put a note in the Banyan Tree to let you all know how amazing Saturday 6/13 was with Holy Nativity. We were a presence at the ordination of Grace Lee at Calvary By the Sea and later HNC put on a great party to launch Bishop Bob's farewell tour.

Then, despite Saturday’s activity, we still managed to have a great turnout and at church on Sunday morning!

In reviewing my commitments in the coming weeks with Rev. Libby, I realized I'll be doing Sunday supply at various churches the rest of the summer! It feels like a lot when I think about it, but I'm grateful to be able to serve the larger Church and to get to know a rich variety of church people in a variety of communities.

As I travel, HN will be in my heart, and I will join you in prayers for all of us in these times of transition, especially for Rev. Libby, Bp. Bob, Tusi, and the Vestry of Holy Nativity.

Venezuelan Relief

On June 24, two strong earthquakes struck north-central Venezuela in rapid succession. Episcopal Relief & Development has reached out to local diocesan partners to assess the needs of evacuees and provide community support in the coming days.

Who’s in the Pew? Patti Urso!

Patti Urso and her husband, Mike Urso, have been part of the Holy Nativity family for several years. Both are active in choir and serve on our current praise team. This week, we are pleased to introduce Patti and share a little of her remarkable journey.

Patti was born in Cuba shortly before the Cuban Revolution. Her father served as a chef for President Fulgencio Batista, and the family was able to leave Cuba safely and resettle in Spain. When Patti was only eight years old and still in elementary school, she came alone from Spain to the United States through a sponsored program for Cuban children.

That early experience left Patti with a lasting appreciation for the country that welcomed her. She became a nurse and later chose to serve in the United States Air Force Reserve as a way of giving back. It was during her military service that she met Mike.

Patti says that their marriage has a little of a “West Side Story” feeling. They came from different backgrounds, but their shared Christian faith, love of family, patriotism, and commitment to one another brought

them together.

Their life and work eventually brought them to Hawaiʻi. Patti earned her PhD in nursing at the University of Hawaiʻi and began teaching there. She was later recruited to join the faculty of nursing at Walden University, where she continues to teach and support future nurses. She also travels for her work and is the author of two books.

Patti and Mike have a son, James, who lives on Oʻahu with his family, including their grandson, Lucas. We are grateful that Patti and Mike are part of the Holy Nativity community and that they share their gifts, voices, and faith with us!

Join our new Praise Team at

Holy Nativity! 

Each Friday at 4pm we gather to practice music to share during Sunday services. We sing together and play ukulele, and depending on participation, we also include chimes, handbells, and percussion instruments.

No matter your age or experience level, everyone is welcome — children, youth, adults, and seniors alike.
