Jean and Bob Steele reflect on their several years

at Holy Nativity.

Nine years ago Jean and Bob Steele came to Holy Nativity; the Rev. Alison Dingley was the supply priest. Shortly thereafter, they were asked to dinner by Kip and Jan Jones; they also became buddies with Justin Donahue because of his unexpected accent and his prize-winning ability to swing through trees with agility and style! Coffee Hour was a time to visit with so many more fellow parishioners.

In 2019, Bob chaired the committee to recruit a Rector and the Interim Priest asked Jean to be parish Treasurer. Among other things, Jean used her detective inclinations to trace why HNC was receiving an $11 check quarterly! She also documented the sources and purposes of the various funds invested with the Diocese. Austin Nakoa was Senior Warden and Eva Eglinton was Junior Warden. During that time, Jean managed to get our insurance to provide the sanctuary with a new million-dollar roof.

Bill Seeley started the Kupuna Watch, which welcomes children to Holy Nativity School every morning, and Bob joined up. Then Bob became a member of several boards, including Holy Nativity School, the Samaritan Counseling Center, and the HOMA boards of directors. A deacon for many years, Bob began to participate in worship leadership, as well. More recently, Bob and Jean gave some of their African American art to HOMA and hosted tours of the show for congregants.

After twenty years here, Jean and Bob's daughter and her husband elected to return to Maryland (with grand-daughter Ida Marie!). Now, Jean has been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, so they have decided to return to Maryland, as well, so they can be closer to them and to other friends and relatives.

Leaving kamaʻāina friends and our HNC ʻohana

isn’t easy, but by the first of August we expect to be winging away.

Aloha! Aloha Nui Loa!

--Jean and Bob

A Message from Deacon Bill

As most of you know, I will be ending my time at HNC this coming Sunday. Gabe and I are grateful for your warm aloha and hospitality! It has been a delight to worship with you all and getting to know many of you during my time here. I have greatly appreciated your support and encouragement, and I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers as I approach my ordination to the priesthood. I will bring my experience with your community with me, since it has made a significant impact on my formation as a deacon.

I will be continuing my ministry at St. Andrew's Cathedral and the churches at Queen Emma Square: St. Andrew's, St. Peter's and St. Paul's. Also, I will be looking into establishing a ministry with Deaf children and adults in Hawaii.

Please keep me and Gabe in your prayers!

Pax,

Deacon Bill
