The Season of Lent

For the 1st Sunday in Lent, on March 9, the Reverend Canon Sandy Graham joined us as Celebrant for our Family Service and for coffee hour on the lanai.

Rev. Sandy will be back to Holy Nativity on Tuesday, April 22 to join Holy Nativity School for their

Easter Eucharist.

(Family Sunday service is always the 2nd Sunday of each month at HNC.)

A Lenten Message from the

Rev. Alison Dingley

Wandering in the Wilderness

The Gospel for last Sunday was the story of Jesus wandering in the Wilderness. He had just been baptized by John the Baptist and went to the wilderness to clarify for himself who he was, who he was called to be, and what his mission was. Many indigenous cultures have the practice of young men (mostly) going off into the wilderness alone on such Walkabouts or Vision Quests.

Mathew and Luke tell us of the temptations Jesus faced in his wilderness journeys, temptations to be less or other than he was called to be. He was tempted to use his powers for his own needs by turning stones into bread. He was tempted to gain unlimited earthly power by serving the evil one. He was tempted to just give up, surrender and be taken care of instead of taking up the responsibility of fulfilling his mission.

We who claim to follow Jesus can be similarly tempted, in our own lives or in our corporate life as the Church. We can use our power and privilege to help ourselves rather than serving others. We can put faith in principalities and powers rather than in the God we know in Jesus. We can close our eyes to the evil around us, trusting in human institutions to save and protect us even as injustice and cruelty go on all around us. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer taught us as he was suffering in Nazi Germany, discipleship is hard.

In this season of Lent, I invite all of us to reflect on our wilderness journey and on how we are facing the temptations of this time.

Once again Holy Nativity will participate in the annual "Lent Madness" event

We encourage you to join us in this online activity, not unlike a sports tournament, and follow its progress on our own giant bracket poster by the church bulletin board.

The event began right after Ash Wednesday when 32 saints were proposed to vie for the

Golden Halo. Through your email you will initially be provided with fascinating biographical information so you may vote every day during Lent. This process continues as you select one saint from a pair in single elimination brackets over five rounds.

To participate in Lent Madness 2025, you need to register at https://www.lentmadness.org
