Who's in the Pew?

(Catherine Nurmi)

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Catherine Nurmi was the third of four freckled, redheaded freckled kids. Her uncle was a physician who took her on hospital rounds in the middle of the night. She observed the work of the “charge nurse” and resolved to have her role. But first Catherine became the person who helped develop (under surgeons’ guidance) open heart post-surgery protocols for Cardiovascular nurses.

One day at the end of her shift, a doctor asked her to stay, but she pleaded that she was very tired. He said, “You will be part of history.” So Catherine stayed and witnessed the world’s first female to undergo artificial heart surgery!

At 23, Catherine (“Cath” to some friends) met her husband, David. He was 6’2”, slender and was wearing a leather aviator jacket! She was pleased when he called a week later. Their son Steven was born in Minneapolis and they all moved to the northern suburbs when their daughter Kelly was five months old. Finally, Catherine started nursing school. She wanted to be a caring nurse -- one who touched her patients. She went into senior care, starting in a nursing home, and advanced into senior case management.

On January 1, 2006, the advent of the a new Medicaid program meant that she could visit seniors in their homes and provide them with comprehensive reviews and recommendations.

Daughter Kelly married in 2005. Around the same time, David bought a timeshare in Hawaii. In 2011, Kelly and her husband and child moved to Hawai’i, permanently. Kelly was pregnant and busy working toward a PhD in business at the University of Hawai’i, so she asked Catherine if she would come to help. The gathering of their three-generation ohana worked out well, but sadly a phone call told them that son Steven had died, overdosing on alcohol. Catherine and David suffered terribly from this loss; their misery continued for months and months. However, Catherine feels they have reached a steady state now. They continue to live with Kelly’s family--which now includes three children. It is a busy, noisy, happy household.

Be Aware: Online Scams Escalating

Nearly all of our churches and their members have been targets (knowingly or otherwise) of phishing attacks or online scams through emails and/or text messages. Even our Bishop has been impersonated numerous times!

Have you received an email or text from a priest or someone in leadership directly asking you for:

  • donations of gift cards?
  • confirmation of personal information?

Some might then ask you to click on a link to take action. These are common practices of scammers who get ahold of church information and impersonate a priest or other members in order to gain your trust. By getting you to share your personal information, or clicking on a link, you may become a victim.

Keep in mind, our clergy will never solicit gift cards! The problem is not going away. With the use of artificial intelligence (AI) becoming commonplace, the problem is growing and becoming even harder to detect. So what can we do to protect ourselves?

BE AWARE AND STAY INFORMED!
