Greetings from the Interim VPSL and Dean of Students

Benjamin C. Meoz, M.Ed., Ph.D.

Hello Lewis & Clark College Students!

This is a special summer edition of The Bark, for our continuing students, with just about a month to go before we see many of you back on campus at the end of August.

We hope that this summer is providing you with plenty of recovery time from the general high pace of the academic year, although we know that many of you still have a combination of summer employment, courses, and internships going on.

As with every summer, we’ve been hard at work preparing for the next academic year and thought it would be good to provide a couple highlights and forecasts for what you can expect as you return.

In this issue of The Bark you’ll be able to read about:

  • A mention of Student Life staffing changes since the Spring 2025 term
  • A revised 2025-26 L&C Shuttle Route (Formerly called “The Pio”)
  • An introduction to “The Hive” web portal
  • An update on the Roberts 112 space
  • A quick reminder about the process to select the new L&C Mascot
  • An update about Student Health Center hours for Fall
  • Be on the lookout for some new required annual trainings

If you have any questions regarding the updates listed here don’t hesitate to reach out. Similarly, if you are wondering about the status of anything not mentioned here let us know.

See you in a few weeks!

Sincerely,

Benjamin C. Meoz, M.Ed., Ph.D.

Interim Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students

Student Life Staff Changes Since Spring 2025

We're excited to announce that several new staff members have joined the division since the end of the spring semester, with more colleagues set to arrive this fall! Here's a look at those who have joined us or will be joining shortly:

Health Promotions & Wellness:

  • Jenna Reinhart started in July as our new Director after the departure of Michelle Callahan.

Center for Social Change and Community Involvement:

  • Andrea Salyer departed LC for a new opportunity at the end of June. A new director for the Center will be announced soon.

Emergency Management:

  • Kevin McVeigh started in July as our new Director, and he is looking at working with students on emergency preparedness and how the college responds to various emergencies.

Community Accountability & Conflict Education (CACE):

  • Hailey Bossert will be serving as the Temporary director of CACE for the Fall 2025 term while Assistant Dean of Students Jessica Carron is away on maternity leave. Hailey has worked in CACE for the last 2 years and should be a familiar face to our community.

Inclusion & Multicultural Engagement (IME):

  • A search is underway for a new Assistant Director for IME after the departure of Erin Khong in April.

Campus Living:

  • A new Area Director for Holmes, Hartzfeld, and the Apartments (HHA) will be joining us soon.

Campus Safety:

  • Several new officers have joined the team, including Ismael Magano, Audrey Cutler, and Alex Dominguez, as well as new dispatcher Alison Lugar.

  • Tamara Ko has just departed L&C for a new opportunity. A search for a new Student Engagement staff member will begin soon. Students can continue to contact Student Engagement in-person in Fowler Student Center or email at studentengagement@lclark.edu.

Updates to Roberts 112

Located off of the plaza between East Hall and Roberts Hall, Roberts 112 has been used for different purposes over the past 3 years including as a temporary Campus Living office during the renovation of Stewart-Odell, a study lounge, and most recently a combination study lounge and pilot location for The Nest student resource hub.

Starting Fall 2025, Roberts 112 is relaunching as a fitness center while also maintaining The Nest basic resource hub in the center of the space. The updated space, attending to multiple dimensions of student wellness, will be a partnership between Campus Living, Health Promotions & Wellness, and Athletics. For fitness purposes the space will have treadmills, ellipticals, open floor for stretching, and weight machines.

The study furniture from Roberts 112 has been distributed to lounges across the residential campus to increase seating availability in those spaces, and the Vice President for Student Life / Dean of Students Office suite across the plaza from Roberts 112 has also added some furniture for quiet study. We invite you into the space to study and say hello.

Revised Weekday 2025-26 L&C Shuttle Route (Formerly called “The Pio”)

After reviewing student feedback and ridership data, Transportation & Parking proposed a new weekday route for the L&C shuttle that shifts to an East-West connector route, and no longer duplicates the Trimet 35 line that runs downtown.

The new weekday route will connect from the Tacoma / Johnson Creek MAX Park & Ride, and pass through Sellwood before coming to campus. From there it will head out to Fred Meyer and then beyond to the Barbur Transit Center before looping back through Sellwood.

This will ensure Sellwood and Fred Meyer access all day during the week while also connecting to two major transport hubs that will open up additional access via transfers to other parts of Portland. Additional information will be provided in Fall to help riders make the most of the new route.

The Friday evening and weekend loop will continue with the current route that goes through Sellwood and the downtown Portland.

The Hive - L&C's New Student Web Portal

Lewis & Clark is excited to announce the successful launch of The Hive—a digital portal designed to help you stay connected and engaged. The Hive Student Portal provides access to essential links, helpful resources, and content from various campus departments and organizations all in one place. You will go to The Hive to check your student account, access housing, and register for classes. The Hive is customizable and you can decide what they want to see on your homepage based on your preferences.

Access The Hive HERE. Watch this brief video for more information about The Hive.

New L&C Mascot Finalists to be Announced

We are nearing the home stretch of the selection of a new L&C Mascot, and are down to the final few candidates after starting off with over 400 eligible nominations!

By the start of fall classes we will announce the finalists, as well as what related community engagement opportunities we have planned during the first couple weeks of the Fall term, before we open up a final voting survey in mid-September.

You can read our updated timeline on the process HERE, but stay tuned for more!

New Student Health Center Hours Starting September 2, 2025

We’re pleased to share an update to the Student Health Center’s hours of operation, designed to improve access to care and enhance the quality of our services.

Beginning Tuesday, September 2, 2025, our regular hours will be:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday

8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 – 4:30 p.m.

The Health Center will be closed on Wednesdays.

This change allows us to expand medical clinic services during traditionally closed periods, including January, May, and August. With the new schedule, we’ll now be able to offer clinic hours two days per week during these breaks—an exciting improvement for students who remain on or near campus. We especially look forward to better serving early arrival CAS students, winter and summer residents, and Law and Graduate students during these times.

In addition, this updated model enhances provider availability and consistency throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. By consolidating clinic days, we will now have two prescribing providers on-site each day, which means:

  • More appointment availability on open days
  • Fewer unexpected or last-minute closures
  • Greater collaboration and support between providers

We’re confident these improvements will help us serve the campus community more effectively while continuing to provide high-quality, student-centered care.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact the Student Health Center at health@lclark.edu.

Be on the Lookout for Some New and Annual Required Trainings

Due to recent changes in state and federal laws, the College is adding a new required online training module for all students — Hazing Prevention and Awareness — through the Vector training platform. This new module will be in addition to the annual Sexual Assault Prevention training.

You’ll receive an email in mid-September with instructions on how to access and complete your required training. Returning students will not be able to view their personal training plan until they receive that notification email.

For details about all required training, due dates, and how to access the Vector platform, please visit the college’s new Training Compliance webpage.
