EARLY VOTING & PRECINCT LOCATIONS ESTABLISHED

NEW LOCATIONS FOR PRECINCTS 7 & 10 IN 2024

The City of Traverse City is excitedly preparing for the upcoming 2024 election cycle! Mark your calendars for the election dates: February 27, August 6, and November 5, 2024.

At their December 4, 2023 meeting, the City Commission approved the relocation of two polling places and the establishment of the Early In-Person Voting Site.

Voting Precincts 7 & 10 Relocation

The relocation of two polling places (used for in-person, election day voting) will be effective with the February 27, 2024, Presidential Primary. Voting Precinct 7, formerly at Traverse Heights Elementary, and Precinct 10, formerly at Glenn Loomis Elementary, have moved locations.

Early In-Person Voting Site

In November 2022, voters across Michigan amended the Michigan Constitution to give themselves the right to early in-person voting in all federal and state elections, and to have the option for early in-person voting at all other elections as determined by the local election official, in our case, the City Clerk. Early in-person voting must be provided a minimum of 9 days (beginning the second Saturday before the election through the Sunday before the election) and for 8 hours per day for all statewide and federal elections, with the same minimum day requirement for all other elections where the local election official opts in, with flexibility in hours.

Early in-person voting for the February 2024 election will begin on Sunday, February 17, 2024 through February 25, 2024.

What is Early In-Person Voting?

Early in-person voting allows the registered voter to cast their ballot in-person at an early voting site before the scheduled Election Day. Such a ballot that is cast during early in-person voting is inserted into the tabulator by the voter and therefore tabulated that day. In addition, at early in-person voting sites, voters who were mailed an absentee ballot would also be able to insert their ballot into the tabulator, of they could simply provide it to the local clerk to have it tabulated by the absent voter counting board.

How is Early Voting Different from Absentee Voting?

Absentee voting, also referred to as mail-in voting, is a method that allows the registered voter to receive and submit their ballot by mail or in-person at their local Clerk’s Office. Absentee Ballots are tabulated on election day. As of 2018, all registered voters in Michigan may request an absentee ballot without providing a reason.

WEST END BEACH STABILIZATION

& PARKING LOT REPAIR

CITY COMMISSION REVIEWS OPTIONS

The West End Beach parking lot suffered damage from high water in 2019/20, leading to a subsequent deterioration in its condition. The lot serves as a pivotal access point for recreation and acts as an ADA accessible trailhead. In addition, it is heavily frequented by residents and visitors throughout the year, boasting restroom facilities and easy accessibility to the beach.

At the December 4, 2023 meeting, the City Commission provided guidance to staff to address the deteriorating infrastructure; issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) with specific objectives in mind. These objectives include halving the parking spaces while potentially relocating it to the Grandview Parkway side and adjusting the trail positioning to reduce conflicts, contingent upon the right-of-way feasibility. Additionally, the plan involves incorporating native plantings, natural stone elements, excluding geotechnical styles, and ensuring accommodation for ADA parking spaces, all within a budget target of $200,000.

To achieve these goals, staff will undertake in-house design exploration, consult with experts, and then proceed to issue the RFP for review and potential approval by the City Commission. Staff will work to ensure that the efforts align with the impending 2025 MDOT reconstruction project that is expected to segregate the adjacent trail.
