December's Pursuit of Excellence Winners
Mrs. Morgan Johnson started working for the Baldwin County School District over 20 years ago and currently works as a Paraprofessional at Lakeview Primary. Mrs. Johnson was nominated by her colleague, Natalie Dunn. Ms. Dunn had the following to say about Morgan Johnson, “Mrs. Johnson is a paraprofessional with Montessori 1st and 2nd grade and just on top of it. She is constantly moving and reaching each student every day. She is very aware of what the progression is for the standards we are teaching and what students need to know to move forward and has no problem giving a presentation on the spot if needed. She is very kind, loving, and considerate for each student, their personal and academic needs and constantly shows compassion to all she encounters. As far as a peer, I can mention that I need to laminate or cut something and before I can turn around she has already done it along with still helping students. She is the best multi-tasker you will ever find. She participates in planning for what students need and is not afraid to say if a student needs something else or needs more practice. She is very positive and helps create a positive and loving work environment. I would be lost without her. She is simply amazing. We have another Montessori teacher that is going out on maternity leave and Mrs. Johnson has stepped up to go and observe daily while the teacher is here to learn her ways and will take over doing the language arts presentations while this teacher is out. She is never afraid to step up and help where needed. Mrs. Johnson is a great asset to our Montessori program. I tell her all the time that I don't tell her thank you enough, so Mrs. Johnson thank you for ALL you do for me, our students, and the Montessori program! We love you!" Mrs. Johnson, thank you for modeling excellence!

Mrs. Sheba Nelson has worked for the Baldwin County School District for over 21 years and currently works as a Transportation Support Specialist. Ms. Nelson received two nominations. Mary Hatchett commends Ms. Nelson for stepping up in the absence of the Director of Transportation. Ms. Hatchett states, “Since our Director left she has had to step in and do her job and the job of the Director. She is always there for us and she has a lot on her plate and she gets it done. Best boss lady ever. She has helped the drivers and the monitors to keep up with the children. Mrs. Nelson has helped us when we have had problems with the schools and each other. We love her dearly!" Tammy Smith states the following about Ms. Nelson, “Sheba is a very hard working lady, she is multi-tasking many different things. She works very long hours and is always there for us when we need her. Even when she is stretched in many directions she gets the job done. She is a very valuable employee and we are very happy to have her as a supervisor and friend." Mrs. Nelson, thank you for being a model of excellence!

Ms. Haley Sage is in her first year working for the Baldwin County School District. Ms. Haley was nominated by her supervising teacher, Heather Cox. Ms. Cox had the following to say about Mrs. Sage: “Mrs. Sage is new to the educational realm. She entered the school district with skills attained by being a good mother and her willingness to learn. Haley is a paraprofessional in my classroom for students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. This position has many challenges not faced in other classrooms such as supporting students with personal hygiene needs, feeding, the ability to understand the communication methods of nonverbal students, as well as dealing with challenging behaviors. It requires a great deal of patience, compassion, and trust, Haley displays all of those qualities. Haley takes every opportunity to learn about each student and their needs. She is a ray of sunshine in our class and her goal is to see students smile upon arrival and all throughout the day. She works hard to help each student reach their potential. She is patient and kind. Haley loves our students and is already an amazing paraprofessional. She has assisted me in dealing with very difficult situations while displaying grace and professionalism. She has been a great help with getting the Braves Buddies program thriving. Haley seeks opportunities for my self-contained students to have meaningful and appropriate interactions with both general education teachers and students to make sure that our students feel like they are a part of the Oak Hill family. She values each student for their unique gifts and traits and their contributions not only to our classroom but to the school community." Ms. Sage, thank you for being a model of excellence.

Ms. Harden is relatively new to the Baldwin County School district. She is in her first year as a Paraprofessional at Lakeview Academy and has already established herself as a model of excellence. She received two nominations. Katrina Shy had the following to say about her: “Ms. Mattie works as our one on one para with a student with a disability. She comes to work every day with a smile on her face. She never complains about the huge responsibility she has when caring for the student. She always has a positive or encouraging comment to share with others when they are feeling down. Ms. harden exhibits the best behavior for humbleness. She always says I do not quit something when I start, I will always do my best and let God handle the rest." Naron Usry describes Ms. Harden as follows: "Ms. Harden is a joy to work with. She is an inspiration to all. She is always encouraging and motivating the staff around Lakeview Academy. Ms. Harden truly cares about the students she works with and she never complains. She does her job and everything that comes with it. She’s a dedicated worker. She brightens up my day just by seeing her coming down the hall." Ms. Harden, thank you for being a shining example of excellence!

Oak Hill Middle School
Band Students Compete for Top Honors
For the first time in two years, band students from across the state were back in front of judging panels competing for spots in their Districts’ Honor Bands, Region Bands, and the All-State Band. Seventh and Eighth grade students participated in their first audition since the COVID-19 pandemic halted these activities two years ago. Oak Hill Middle School had 14 students travel to Warner Robins on December 4th to audition with over 200 other middle school students from the Georgia Music Educators’ Association District 11.
Audition requirements include playing four major scales, the chromatic scale, and a short prepared etude (short piece for study). Additionally, students have to sight read a short piece. Sight reading is a process where the students perform short piece they have never seen nor heard after a 30 second study period. Four students earned seats in the District 11 symphonic band: Christina Jasso-Rios (8), 6th chair clarinet; Jeremiah Thomas (8), 6th chair trumpet; Kiersten Stanley (7), 3rd chair tuba; Tristen Ingram (8), 1st chair french horn. Thomas, Stanley, and Ingram also scored high enough to advance to the second round of All-State auditions to be held in January where they will compete with each districts’ top students from across the state to try to earn a spot in the 2022 All-State Band.
Directors Elise Allen and Trent Henderson commented how proud they are of these students, especially the 7th graders who tried out with only a few months of preparation. Band students from Baldwin High School auditioned on December 11th. The directors and staff of the Baldwin Band program, which begins in 3rd grade and progresses through 12th grade, are working hard to grow the program with quality young musicians to represent our schools and community with the utmost passion.
Mr. Henderson stated, “We would like to thank our principal, Mr. Ray, Dr. Price, Mr. Jay Wucher and our school board for showing unwavering support for the fine arts in Baldwin County and to our community for the many ways you contribute to the young people in our schools.”

Baldwin High School Chick-fil-A Leader Academy Serves Others
The Chick-fil-A Leader Academy has had a busy first semester. The year began with the Kick-Off Event where 19 new students were welcomed. Mr. Curt Flournoy, the Chick-fil-A Milledgeville Operator, provided lunch for the students as well as spoke to the group about the purpose and welcomed them into the program. The members began the event with an ice breaker activity - Guess It. The members dug right in and started planning the Do Good December Project. This service project emphasizes teamwork by asking students to “Drive, Do, and Deliver” during the holiday season. The students plan the project as well as implement it. The students at BHS decided to help students who may need a little extra food for the holidays. They packed 80 blessing bags with different items of food. Two of the Baldwin County school buses were adopted and students were able to take the bags when they got off the bus. The food items came from the BHS student pantry, which was the impact project completed by Chick-fil-A Leader Academy students in 2018. We have had several community organizations that continue to sponsor the pantry which enables us to keep it stocked with food items to serve the students at Baldwin High School. Northridge Christian Church of Milledgeville, Kappa Kappa Iota, Communities In Schools, teachers, administration, and BHS Beta Club donated items this semester to help replenish the pantry, which allowed us to pack so many bags for the holidays.

Lakeview Primary Recognizes Teachers
We are excited to recognize Lakeview Primary staff members who are now Gifted and/or STEM endorsed. These teachers worked hard to obtain endorsements in these areas. Many of the teachers obtained the endorsements last school year, however, all of the endorsed teachers were recognized at the November faculty meeting with a framed certificate to place in their classrooms. We look forward to seeing the awesome things that these teachers will implement within their classrooms to benefit their students.
Gifted Endorsed Teachers learn strategies to challenge our students to think outside the box and push them to achieve at high levels.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Endorsed Teachers learn strategies to integrate science, technology, engineering, art, and math within the curriculum.
