BCSD to Purchase School Supplies for Students
As stores begin to prepare for the back-to-school season, the Baldwin County School District will assist families with school essentials by purchasing basic school supplies for all students for the 2021-2022 school year. At the June 8th Baldwin County Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Dr. Noris Price recommended using funds from the federal CARES Act to purchase school supplies for all students to provide some financial relief for parents in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The Baldwin County Board of Education unanimously approved the recommendation. This means that all students will receive FREE school supplies for the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year. Students will receive the supplies prior to the start of the school year.

STEAM First Responders Health Fair
The Baldwin County School District held a First Responders Health Fair during the Summer Summer Adventure Program at Lakeview Academy. The event was spearheaded by Mrs. Townsend, Lakeview Academy's school nurse. The purpose of the health fair was to help children be more comfortable with first responders as well as have an opportunity to get to know what each first responder does to keep them safe. Students taking part in the summer YES, STEAMY Summer, Dance, and Drama programs got a chance to speak with each emergency and health professional in person and learn more about their specific job duties. The First Responders Health Fair consisted of state troopers from the Georgia State Patrol, nurses and clinical staff from the Bee Well Clinic and Community Health Care Systems, Inc., resource officers and deputies from the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office, emergency personnel from the Air Evac Lifeteam, FoodCorps employees, firefighters from both the City of Milledgeville Fire Department and the Baldwin County Fire Department along with Sparky the Fire Safety Dog, and EMT's from Grady EMS Ambulance Service. Baldwin High's Journey Through Literature a Great Hit This Summer
Baldwin High School's Media Center's Journey through literature program was a great success this summer. The program took place on Thursdays and was part of a summer literacy grant that the high school received from the Georgia Department of Education.
"We had STEAM Activities, Escape Room activities, and Book Clubs offered as well as different Journey bags that students were able to check out about different topics. The journeys had 2 to 3 books in them about that topic with activities they can do to earn badges," said BHS Media Specialist Pamela Longino.
Students were also able to check out books from 11 a.m.-3:oo p.m. According to Mrs. Longino, the goal for having the media center open during the summer was to help with the Summer Slide.
"We wanted the students to have the opportunity to continue reading during the summer to prevent the Summer Slide that occurs when students are out for the summer. It was also a great opportunity for our students due to a lot of them being home for virtual learning during the 2020-2021 school year."
The program's goal was to improve students' Lexile scores as well as to instill a love of reading. A big thank you goes out to Ms. Hope Goodner, Wilkinson County Middle and High School Media Specialist, who also took part in the program. She came out to volunteer to help Mrs. Longino with the setting up of the escape room. The theme of The Escape room was team building. Students had to complete different tasks to be able to escape.
