WINTER 2023 | JANUARY 9, 2023
|
|
With the new year, I like to take time to reflect on the previous year. 2022 brought so many wonderful memories to Traditions at Beaumont. This year marked 7 years of service to our residents and their families. We had the joy of welcoming so many new residents into our community! Each of our residents has a unique story to tell and are an absolute pleasure to serve. You are the reason we come to work every day!
Not only do we like to have a lot of fun around Beaumont (just ask our Happy Hour crew), but we have also grown together as the greater Fern Creek community in unforeseen ways. 2022 will be a year I will never forget as being stretched personally and professionally. It is times of crisis that deepen our bond together and show the resilience of our people. Rebuilding from the aftermath of the tornado has been over an 8-month long process for us and many of our neighbors, and I am happy to say we are finally finished!
|
|
Sometimes it’s not all about the entertainment, though we sure do enjoy that too! It’s about the memories and connections we create together through the peaks and valleys. Whether it’s through honoring the sacrifice of our veterans, celebrating a 70-year wedding anniversary, or remembering the life well-lived of a dear friend—these are the moments we cherish together. Thank you to everyone who has allowed us to be a part of their lives and/or loved ones’ lives this past year. It has been such an honor to support, serve, and celebrate with our residents, families, friends, and staff.
I couldn’t be prouder of what we have accomplished in 2022 and look forward to all that is in store for 2023!
Wishing you health, peace, and new blessings in this New Year.

As the snow begins to fall, let us look back over the last a couple of months to warm our hearts. We have had some spectacular get-togethers with residents and their families, which is what we love to do at Traditions of Beaumont. We were blessed to welcome many children into our community to enjoy a wonderful Halloween with us. There were lots of ghosts and goblins. It was such a beautiful sight to see the residents and families interacting with new friendships being made.
|
|
Next, was our elegant Christmas Gala, where families came together for fabulous desserts, connection, entertainment, and friendship. Santa, Mrs. Claus, and elves visited Traditions at Beaumont to spread a little Christmas magic to the kids and adults. In between these big events, we had lots of other fun things such as door decorating, ornament making, and lots of cookies and hot cocoa. We are already looking forward to continuing the fun into 2023 with more family-filled events.

January finds us recuperating from the hustle and bustle of the holidays and settling in as winter weather approaches. We will be offering fun activities to keep us warm such as celebrating National Hat Day and National Irish Coffee Day. We also have quite a few outings planned, with a lunch outing to Claudia Sanders as just one of the exciting places we will be going! We also have a local historian coming in to present “Legends of Louisville” which will highlight local legends such as Muhammad Ali, 'The Birthday Song Sisters,' along with many more!
|
|
February will keep us busy with Valentine’s Day celebrations and crafts. We’ll follow that up with an exciting local Jazz/Swing Band for Mardi Gras! We have lined up several exciting lunch and dinner outings and look forward to some new entertainers, including a magician!
|
|
March will find us eager for the first day of Spring and warmer weather ahead! We will plant seeds for transplanting in our raised beds. We also have several Scenic Drives planned, including our St. Patrick’s Day Party Bus! Make sure to look us up on Facebook for pictures of all the fun!

2023 brings Fit Minds for our Varietas and Assisted Living residents! We are excited to bring this cutting-edge program to our community!
Fit Minds can be life changing with increased mental stimulation. Cognitive stimulation is an evidence-based intervention that supports what research tells us about the brain’s ability to build resilience and create new neuron pathways. Fit Minds provides mental stimulation, in group and individualized programs for seniors and senior living communities.
Fit Minds exercises five key areas of cognition:
- Language and Music
- Visual/Spatial Orientation
- Memory
- Critical Thinking
- Computation
75% of participants see a positive increase in their cognitive scores after only 8 weeks. Why is improving your cognition important?
“Cognitive stimulation has also been shown to be an effective habit for preserving cognitive degeneration. Low education is a risk factor for dementia and degenerative disease, so stimulating the brain can be helpful in minimizing the risks of cognitive impairment and degenerative diseases.”
Our Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Care residents will all be able to utilize Fit Minds in 2023!
NOTE: If you are caring for a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementias, you may benefit from our monthly support group meetings. Please join us every third Friday at 6:00pm for an educational discussion, encouragement, and light refreshments. Shannon Bland, our Memory Care Director, holds a PhD in Gerontology from the University of Kentucky and is also a board-certified music therapist. We look forward to seeing you there.

FEBRUARY IS HEALTHY HEART MONTH
|
|
You can keep your heart healthy no matter how old you are, by making changes in your everyday habits. Here’s how to get started:
-
Get enough exercise. Physical activity is one of the best ways to improve heart health. The American Heart Association recommends that individuals perform at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise.
-
Eat a heart-healthy diet. Load up on fresh fruits and vegetables while limiting saturated fats, salt, and foods containing cholesterol, like fatty meats. A Mediterranean diet focuses on eating a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and fish and seafood instead of red and processed meats.
-
Reduce your alcohol intake. Excess alcohol consumption can worsen health conditions that contribute to heart disease, such as high blood pressure, arrhythmias, and high cholesterol levels.
-
Watch your weight. To help prevent heart disease, maintain a healthy body weight for your size. Too many pounds can add up to increased heart disease risk.
-
Get better sleep. It’s critical for seniors (and everyone) to have a good night’s sleep. Most experts say that seniors should sleep between seven and nine hours each night. Sleep is beneficial for brain functionality, metabolism, immune functionality and emotional well-being.
-
Reduce stress factors. According to studies, stress can compound many heart disease risks that older adults already face, like high blood pressure. Take the time to find healthy outlets to relieve stress and lower your risk of heart disease.

Now that we are in the thick of winter and the holidays are wrapping up, be extra mindful of slippery conditions as you make your way around our community. Black Friday season is over, however black ice will be around for a few more months. Report any slippery areas so we can treat it with ice melt as this can change daily with melting and freezing cycles. Make sure exterior hoses are detached if used during a warm-up week and continue to dress in layers.
Our furry friends will want to play outside, just limit the amount of time that they are out and keep them away from the pond due to thin ice. Please report any activity around the pond that looks unsafe as we have many neighbors who might be enticed. The fountains will be turned back on in the spring when the threat of freezing is over.
Enjoy the winter landscape and creatures scurrying around. If providing food for these creatures, please keep the food in a metal container with a tight lid to discourage small critters and bugs from gathering around your living space.
