Thursday, March 12, 2026 - The Beauty of Imperfection | | |
By Parish Administrator, Lori Sinclair
Dear Christ Church Family,
So I’ve been trying a new hobby…stained glass. I’ve always been intrigued by stained glass. I think it stems from my love of quilting. Now, before you start to get impressed by my crafting skill levels, I am nowhere near the levels of Rev. Mary Trainor or the beautiful stained glass in our nave. No, I like to see what I can make from whatever scraps of cloth and now scraps of glass. I’ve recently started making small sun catchers from patterns, like birds, butterflies, mountains, hearts, flowers, fish, stars, Christmas trees, and sunsets. Even though I feel a little cringe when I look at what I’ve made, I still like to make them for people. I think about what that person may like, and it’s my way of showing that they are important to me. But when I look at the finished product (especially now that I’m using patterns), all I can see are the many flaws. And I can’t help but feel embarrassed.
I was recently sharing this with my friend Julie Thauer because I had made a stained glass piece for Deacon Nancy, a true artist of all sorts. I wanted Julie to look at it before I gifted it. I remember saying, “If I hold it this far away…you can’t see this mistake.” Julie just looked at me with her kind eyes, smiled, and shook her head. She said that she was reminded of a Japanese art called kintsugi, which I had never heard of. It is the art of repairing broken pottery using lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, highlighting–rather than hiding–fractures. It’s actually a beautiful tradition that celebrates imperfections and turning broken items into more beautiful and resilient pieces.
Broken, mended, imperfect, resilient. What a beautiful picture of what Lent can be to us. Just like the “mistakes” in my stained glass, or the things that embarrass me, we can use all the “imperfections” in our own lives to be transformed into something more beautiful. Oh, and if you were wondering, Deacon Nancy loved her gift I made.
Imperfectly,
Lori Sinclair

Music this Week at Christ Church
by Michael Batcho
This Sunday two of the voluntaries are based on German hymn tunes: Jesu kreuz, leiden und pein (Jesus's cross, suffering and pain) and O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig (O Lamb of God, innocent).
The first dates from the early 17th century. It was composed by Melchior Vulpius. He was a prominent teacher and cantor at the Latin School in Weimar. This hymn, a meditation on the suffering of Jesus, is often sung for passiontide services. I will play Flor Peeters' setting of this hymn. It comes from his Opus 100 Hymn Preludes for the Liturgical Year.
The second hymn was written in the early years of the 16th century. The tune is attributed to Nikolaus Decius, a German monk and reformer. His goal was to craft a hymn that would substitute the "Lamb of God." What was initially a communion hymn eventually morphed into a passion hymn. Johann Pachelbel composed several organ pieces on this tune. All are noted for clarity in their counterpoint and sensitivity to the text. I will play one of the shorter chorales for the postlude.

Good Friday Women's Ensemble
It's been the tradition at Christ Church to have a women's ensemble sing for the 12 noon Good Friday liturgy and I'd like to invite any woman who likes to sing to participate.
There will be two rehearsals, both on Tuesday evenings:
March 24, March 31 - Time: 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM.
Since there is a bit of music to prepare, attendance at both rehearsals is expected.
The service is on Friday, April 03, at 12 noon.
We should conclude around 1:15 or so.
Though helpful, previous choral experience and the ability to read music aren't required.
Contact Michael if you have any questions or would like to sign up.

Key UW Extension Biological Control of Insects in
your lawn
Biological control of lawn insects involves using natural enemies—predators (birds, beetles), parasites, and pathogens (bacteria, fungi, nematodes)—to manage pests like white grubs, as recommended by UW-Madison Extension and Extension Barron County. Key strategies include reducing insecticide use to protect beneficial insects, maintaining healthy turf by mowing at 3-4 inches, and using specific biological agents like Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Wisconsin Horticulture – Division of Extension.
Key Biological Control Strategies for Lawns (UW Extension)
Conserving Natural Enemies: The most effective strategy is reducing or eliminating the use of broad-spectrum chemical pesticides, which allows existing beneficial insects (e.g., lady beetles, spiders, ground beetles) to thrive.
Pathogens/Microbial Control: Utilizing naturally occurring microorganisms to kill pests,
such as:
Milky Spore Disease: Used for controlling Japanese beetle larvae.
Beneficial Nematodes: Effective for controlling white grubs in moist soil.
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt): A bacterium used for managing specific caterpillars.
NOTE: last year I had raccoons digging up lawn for tasty grub snacks so I used beneficial nematodes early May. You can buy them online but be aware, you have to use at THE RIGHT TIME and STRICTLY FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. Many of my neighbors had the brown dead patches symptomatic of grubs(eating roots) but I also had vast areas of torn up sod....talk to me for details. Betsy Head 414.967.7700

Theology by the Pint – Thursday, March 26, 5:30 p.m. in the Good Shepherd Room
Snacks and beverages are provided.
Topic: Theories of Atonement
What images or metaphors for Christ's saving work have most shaped your understanding of the atonement? Why do you think Christians have developed so many different explanations for the atonement throughout history? What might be gained—or lost—when Christians try to reduce the mystery of the cross to a single theological theory?
To learn more about this event, please email the Rev. Matt Phillips.
*Theology by the Pint is a casual gathering for conversation where participants are encouraged to listen to others’ perspectives without judgment and to seek better understanding. Regardless of differences, we strive to love our neighbors as ourselves and to respect the dignity of every human being.
