March 25, 2020

Dear Los Gatos Union School District Families,

Thank you for your support and patience during these two weeks as we’ve rolled out our Remote Learning efforts to support learning during this national emergency. Our administrative team and teachers continue to develop the best ways to connect with students amid the ever-changing events around COVID-19.

This morning the Santa Clara County Office of Education, in support of the Santa Clara County Public Health Department’s shelter-in-place order, extended the county-wide school closures until May 1, 2020, to help slow the spread of COVID-19. This was a collective decision of the Bay Area’s seven county health departments in collaboration with all county superintendents. All public school districts in Santa Clara County will follow this order. This means all LGUSD campuses and the district office will remain closed to the public.

Our remote learning efforts will continue as the LGUSD staff develop additional plans for supporting the continuity of education for all students in our community. The food service plan, providing breakfast/lunch for any child 18-years and younger, will continue through the school closures.

Our teachers and support staff are working to connect with and encourage students to learn every day. They are caring and passionate professionals who work diligently to provide one of the best educations in California. Your care and support of the staff are much appreciated and needed during these difficult times. I am confident that when we work together, we can meet this challenge and accomplish anything.

Yours in education,
Paul Johnson
Superintendent

March’s Cornerstone Corner:
Long Shot
March’s book is Long Shot by Chris Paul. The focus of this book is to inspire students to find their spark, explore their world, and learn about their passions. We discussed how to set goals and how talk to “Goal Champions” about the steps they can take to achieve their dreams. The goals for this lesson are to:

  1. Help students explore and discover their spark (interests, dreams, passions, etc.).
  2. Identify their Goal Champions (parents, coaches, siblings, friends, etc.).
  3. Set short and long term goals, steps to get there, and make changes as needed to achieve their dreams.
  4. Reflect upon and identify the support students receive from their peers, family, and community.
  5. Empower students to provide support to their peers, family, and community.

At home, parents can reinforce March’s Cornerstone theme by helping their children identify, observe, and understand the steps to success that are needed to achieve their goals. We can use our own GPS to find our way:

  • Goal - What is the goal?
  • Path - How are we going to achieve or meet our goal?
  • Switch – What do we do when there are challenges and our plan needs to change? How do we change our method so that we can achieve success?

Additional books that are relevant to this month’s theme:

What Do You Do With a Chance? by Kobi Yamada; Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall; I Can’t Do That Yet by Esther Cordova; Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty; How To Catch A Star by Oliver Jeffers; A Chair for My Mother by Vera B. Williams.
