Dear Blossom Hill Families:
Our school was buzzing last week when students brought in the results of their scientific investigations to share with the community at the annual Science Fair. The goals of the event were to provide an opportunity for students to BEE CURIOUS while fostering enthusiasm for science, engineering, and an understanding of the scientific method. Without a doubt, the goals were met!
This year, our Science Fair Committee chairs, Nicole Duke and Michelle Avlas went above and beyond setting students up for success. They kicked-off the event by partnering with Mrs. Grespan to provide classroom presentations explaining the Scientific Method and promoting excitement by sharing ideas for potential projects. In addition, they arranged an Extreme Science assembly that left both students and staff enthralled and inspired. This was followed by the Science Fair where over 200 student participants presented their projects to their classmates, teachers, families, and Superintendent Paul Johnson. Together we learned that bubbles can bounce, evaporation cleans water the best, fast food can last a VERY long time without molding and that the dirtiest thing in your house may be a refrigerator handle.
The icing on the cake was Family Fun Science Night when our community was able to gather again to celebrate our children. The evening included a visit from LGHS’s Iron Claw Robotics Team (featuring BH alumni) who demoed one of their prize robots for our kiddos and even gave them the opportunity to control it.
An enrichment event such as this could not take place without the sponsorship of our Home & School Club and the dedication and commitment of the incredible parents who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Heartfelt appreciation goes to: Preeti Patel, Nidhi Vashisht, Shailja Kumari, Amy Gregor, Ellen Feichtmeir, Melissa Crow, Kristin Hutchinson, Trista Bernstein, Joshua Bernstein, Steve Fanier, Coral Soto, Yiyan Wu, Kavitha Rao, and Jennifer Shapiro (for designing the awesome Science Fair t-shirt). Great gratitude also goes to BH staff: Amy Grespan, Augustin Garcia, Baltazar Vera, and Sal Madrigal for their enthusiastic and tireless support.
If your child enjoyed the Science Fair, I encourage you to explore the following resource. The Bay Area Science Festival website maintains a year-round calendar of fun science and nature related events at: http://www.bayareascience.org/calendar/ . Collaborating together, we can continue to support a sense of wonder in the world and encourage our children to think about how things work and ask questions.
In addition to the Science Fair, our 5th grade students recently had the opportunity to attend in-person Science Camp. This was a huge undertaking and made possible by our very own Cindy Adams who researched and found a camp that could accommodate the size of our group. Mrs. Adams also attended camp as a chaperone when the need arose at the last moment. Talk about dedication! A big thanks also goes to our 5th grade teachers: Ms. Valentine, Mrs. O’Donnell, & Mr. Joanides and our SuperHero 5th grade parents who served as Science Camp chaperones and cabin supervisors. (Yes, you read that correctly. They are the ultimate SuperHeroes!)
Extra special gratitude goes to parents: Joe Kwong, Ken Salazar, Nick Lessley, Ben Carter, Jeff Cole, Jian Hu, Larry Ping, Matt Duke, Kent Davis, Butch DiSessa, Vaneet Wadhawan, Rebecca Escobar, Galit Goldenthal, Ting Engelman, Jean Choi, Jennifer Shapiro, Sonja Margolis, Jen Lenz and Kari Nanez for so generously sharing their time, wisdom, and kind hearts to make this special experience possible. They truly embody the Developmental Assets of our Project Cornerstone program: Family Support, Positive Family Communication, Other Adult Relationships, Caring Neighborhood, Caring School Climate, & Parent Involvement in School.

A big thank you to Roxana Niktab, parent volunteer, for offering her talents to share a craft and stories to learn about Nowruz, Persian New Year. It was so inspiring to see very engaged 1st through 5th graders sitting under trees in the shade at Fun Fridays, learning about Nowruz. The packet Roxana shared, with the craft, can be accessed here for anyone who would like to learn more at home with your children. Thank you Roxana!

Mileage Club has been a keystone program for my family’s Blossom Hill experience. During Mileage Club season, our family has dinner table conversations about physical fitness, teamwork, goal setting, and most importantly, the rewards that come from consistent effort. I am a lifelong runner and I feel like running is one of the best metaphors for life - because you get out what you put in. Aristotle is credited for saying “we are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” During Mileage Club, Blossom Hill students are able to set goals to run a 5k, 10k, half marathon, marathon, ultra marathon or more. Over time, they see the rewards of their weekly goals and habits. The H&SC will hold an assembly in May to award medals to students who achieve marathon status and trophies to those who achieve ultra marathon status. Special recognition is also given to the class that collectively runs the most miles. There are 25 running days left in Mileage Club. Take an opportunity this week to talk with your student about goals. Help them set an attainable goal and watch them thrive.
Many thanks goes to Amanda Caruso, our Mileage Club chair, for reigniting this program. Special recognition to the following students who have achieved Marathon and Half Marathon status as of March 22. Many students will achieve marathon status this week. We are so proud of you! We hope you never forget how wildly capable you are.
