The Benefits of Showing Gratitude

When I was a young girl, my grandmother would always tell us: “Show your gratitude, always be gracious, and don’t forget to say thank you.” Those simple words stayed with me all my life. November is the month of gratitude and reflection. Caregivers are invited to acknowledge the blessings in their lives. We here at Day Break Adult Care, thank you for all you do to support our mission. We are especially grateful for your support to caregivers.

In the midst of the many challenges, caregivers expressed ways of showing appreciation to their care-receivers and loved ones. It felt like beautiful bouquets of flowers falling from their lips. One caregiver expressed how she was inspired to assemble a "care package" for a stroke patient. She later found out that this simple gesture, along with an encouraging note, moved the man to tears. The responses to this kind of gesture continued to pour in. It was like a “heart-felt hugs.”

Later in the meeting, we discussed meaningful ways to cultivate gratitude:

  • Handwritten letters and notes are effective tools
  • Keep a gratitude journal
  • Donate time to support organizations working to improve our community
  • Donate unwanted belongings
  • Support a cause that you value—your contribution can transform lives!

Finally we ended the session with this reflection:

"What you put in the world always finds it's way back, so live with integrity, kindness and gratitude. Know that the peace within reflects in everything around you."
