My Predictions For 2019

I see in my crystal ball exciting new and improving aesthetic & regenerative medical treatments in 2019, some of which are being revealed to you first, before the rest of the world, including:

Very recent research shows that fat factor treatments, known more commonly by the misnomer "nanofat" treatments, use stem cells & growth factors from a small amount of fat to rejuvenate those areas that don't require volume, like the neck and essentially any area of the body. Don't expect to see the treatment advertised or on The Doctors, because this treatment utilizes your own healing cascade cells instead of a commercial product  to youthanize your body

A  first-of-its-kind, anti-aging facial volumizing treatment is being patented by Skinspirations, & we're bursting at the seams trying not to spill the beans before it's official, but you'll be the first to know.

Dr. Elliott's Skinbucha team
Increasing real probiotics & prebiotics in skincare- Research is showing that good bacteria are beneficial not only for the gastrointestinal system, but also for the skin, and when used topically, can decrease acne breakouts, rosacea symptoms, eczema, seborrheic dermatitis and more. There are very few skin products containing the effective live bacteria but Skinspirations is getting ready to introduce a new live probiotic product for application to the skin, named "Skinbucha". The product can be used like a toner that gently exfoliates, cleanses & increases good bacteria while decreasing the bad. Mention the newsletter & get a free sample of Skinbucha through February.

New absorbable suture treatments, such as our " Thread Treatments", are being developed for new uses & multiple body areas & will become increasingly popular in 2019. Our own Corinn Singletary, PA-C, is now a trainer for NovaThreads & teaches thread techniques to other medical professionals.

More men will use injectable dermal fillers to masculinize their facial features by augmenting their chins, jawlines & brows, & we will be happy to help them

New Botox competitor named Nabota (Prabotulinum toxin A), already available in 60 countries, should be approved by the FDA this spring (if the government shutdown doesn't continue much longer). Since it will be the new kid on the block, hopefully it will be priced competitively. Daxibotulinum toxin A from the company Revance, is another new Botox competitor nearing approval, & it appears to start showing effects within the first few days, similar to Dysport.

Many other exciting developments in cosmetic & regenerative medicine are on the horizon & we'll be passing the news on to you in upcoming newsletters so stay tuned.

2019 promises to be a great year!

Cosmetic Treatments That Are Best Done in Winter (giving you a few more weeks here in Fl)
Winter is the best time to have treatments done on the body that may cause more than a few days of discoloration, swelling or bruising, because winter clothing can hide a multitude of sins.  And as you know, turtleneck season here lasts about 3 days, so time's a wasting!.

Winter is also the time to start those treatments for your summer goals that require a few months and/or a few sessions.
Couple at beach

Winter body treatments that may cause more than a few days of skin discoloration:
  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) removes spots within a week on the face but on the body, the temporarily darker spots can take up to 4 weeks to flake away.
  • Profractional Laser Resurfacing can be done anywhere on the body to smooth crepey, crinkly skin or improve scars but can cause some blotchy redness for up to 6 weeks following the treatment.
Body treatments requiring more than 1 session or 1 month to achieve desired results:
  • About 7 sessions of monthly  treatments reduces about 70% of dark hair, on average, in the treated area
  • Because of their slow growth it can take at least 3 months to see improvement in nails treated with Laser Nail Fungus treatments
  • CoolSculpting fat reduction results may take 8 - 16 weeks to become noticeable but some people see improvement sooner.
  • Laser Vein Removal on body areas usually requires at least 4 - 12 weeks to see improvement, depending on the width of the treated veins. Blue spider veins improve faster than wider, deeper green veins.
  • Laser Tattoo Removal usually requires multiple treatments, done 8 weeks apart, before significant fading of the tattoo is seen.

If you plan on having any of the treatments above, you'll want to schedule them now because be fore you know it, you'll be back in your summer duds, so call us at 727.571.1923 soon.

Study Shows Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Improves Sun-Damaged Skin
JAMA Dermatology, Dec. 2018

In a recent study, 27 people who had bilateral cheek wrinkles had 3 ml (less than a teaspoon) of PRP injected into the skin of one cheek and 3 ml of saline injected into the other. Neither the participants nor the raters knew which cheek was injected with PRP & which with saline. No significant differences in the results were noted at 2 weeks and 3 months after a single treatment, but by 6 months, the participants noticed significant improvement in the PRP-treated cheek.

At Skinspirations, PRP can be applied during a microneedling treatment to achieve multiple benefits including skin rejuvenation & hair restoration in areas where hair is thinning.

Sneaky Dehydration: Different Strategies for Dry vs Dehydrated Skin
from Nov. 2018, SkinInc

Skin conditions are a hefty variable in one's treatment and requires a deep interest and understanding of skin. The skin condition "dehydrated"and the skin type "dry" are easily disguised as one another, and yes, there is a major difference between them.

Dehydrated skin is one of the most common yet misunderstood skin conditions, and to the untrained eye it will present itself as dry skin. Overlooking this difference can cost you grief, because the worst way to treat dehydrated skin is as if it is dry.

Oil relieves dry skin, but water relieves dehydrated skin.

Causes and Signs
Dehydration is the lack of water in the skin, coupled with a stripped acid mantle. It is the one condition that you either have some confusion about or may be one of the few who has a true understanding of it. Remembering that skin types change little throughout life and skin conditions are a variable based on what a person is or isn't doing is an important lesson to review. Specifically, the cause of dehydration is more closely related to extrinsic factors such as the misuse of products, lack of products and environmental causes.

Nature's Sponge: The Magic of Hyaluronic Acid
from the Nov. 2018 edition of SkinInc

At this stage of its popularity, hyaluronic acid (HA) is one of the brightest stars on the best ingredient list as we can see from the plethora of serums, ampoules, creams and sheet masks that are currently available.

(It's also the main ingredient in the injectable fillers Juvederm & Restylane).

To give you a fuller idea of its  capabilities, one gram of HA holds approximately six liters of water.

Now produced scientifically to ensure efficacy, HA is an essential product to add to the ever-changing and expanding skin care tool box. Its plumping and moisturizing properties are well known, but it has many other qualities that keep the skin healthy and looking youthful.

The Basics
HA is a clear sugary substance that is classified as a glycosaminoglycan (GAG), also known as mucopolysaccharides. It is produced by the body naturally and is part of the extracellular matrix (ECM), the skin's protective barrier. HA is well known as a lubricant and cushion for the joints, but it has many other functions like sustaining the shape of the eyeballs. Also, one reason why hormone replacement therapy often causes the skin to look more youthful and less sun damaged is because estrogen contained in these treatments maintains moisture by increasing hyaluronic acid and mucopolysaccharide levels.

In the skin, which contains 50% of the hyaluronic acid present in the human body, it also helps to retain collagen and provide elasticity and flexibility. In other words, it keeps us looking young. Many people report that their skin feels "dewier," the bags under their eyes diminish and their skin texture is smoother after applying serums and creams containing hyaluronic acid.

Two Hyaluronic acid-containing skin care products recommended by Skinspirations:

SkinMedica HA5
Why we love it: This hydrator features a proprietary blend of five different forms of hyaluronic acid, which work synergistically to provide continuous hydration for up to eight hours. It also contains a very potent antioxidant from vitis flower stem-cell extract, which supports skin's natural ability to replenish its own hyaluronic acid for increased hydration and long-term skin health.

What clients say: "It plumps and smooths everything out and leaves a gorgeous, silky matte veil on the skin, never leaving it greasy or shiny. Complexion has been flawless! I'm hooked."-Olalla, WA

What to Eat for Healthy Skin
from Experience Life, Jan-Feb, 2019, by Chrystyle Fiedler

Your skin's appearance is a reflection of your inner health. Learn what to eat and what to avoid for a healthy complexion.

Acne was ruining my life," says Olivia Gilmer, who suffered from persistent blemishes on her face and chest in her early 40s. Over-the-counter topical treatments and prescription antibiotics offered only temporary relief. A dermatologist suggested  birth-control pills to balance her hormones, but those didn't help either. Worried about side effects, Gilmer (not her real name) resisted taking a prescribed acne medication.

Finally, after years of suffering, she consulted naturopathic physician Trevor Cates, ND, in Park City, Utah, who inquired about her dietary habits and digestion issues. Gilmer admitted she had a bit of a sweet tooth and often felt bloated and uneasy after meals. Cates suspected that Gilmer's diet was the culprit behind her issues and recommended several changes.

In addition to limiting sweets to stabilize Gilmer's blood-sugar and insulin levels, Cates recommended adding more fiber- and antioxidant-rich veggies to support her body's detoxification systems and restore hormonal balance. She instructed her to eat foods high in amino acids to assist the synthesis of  collagen (a protein that plays a vital role in skin structure) and to take prebiotics and probiotics to support gut health. Cates also suggested Gilmer eat two servings a week of wild-caught fatty fish to boost her intake of omega-3 fatty acids, which help minimize inflammation.

Within two weeks, Gilmer began to see improvements. Three months later, her skin was clear.
