Dear Sister Soldier Project Family, Friends, Hosts, Posse Members, Volunteers, Sponsors and Supporters:

April, 2011, A Record Setting Month!

In April, the Project achieved a new record, nearly 700 packages shipped to the Sisters during that 30-day period alone! Two very special Packing Party events occurred that month.

The Sistahs Bookclubbing organization of Shreveport, LA held their three-peat packing event on April 16, shipping another 150 boxes this time, with hair care products donated by our dear friends at Organic Root Stimulator.  For the first time, I was unable to attend a Sistah's Bookclubbing Packing Party, but not to worry. Tannie Bradley, who has become my Louisiana "alter ego", and her book club sisters, pulled it off with their usual efficiency and expertise. Tannie was interviewed on the local Shreveport news the day before the event, with additional on-site event coverage from both electronic and print media reporters.

And, get this...........for the first time at any packing party, the local USPS outlet sent a postal truck on-location to facilitate the operation. No need to car pool the packages to the Post Office, all processing completed on the spot!  Needless to say, we used this information to great advantage two weeks later.

In March and April, Delta Sigma Theta ruled at Sister Soldier Project Packing Parties.

On March 30, the  sorors   of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. concluded their  Sisterhood Month Fellowship by hosting a  Packing Party, shipping 100 packages in conjunction with Project A.C.E. (Alumnae Collegiate Exchange), a collaboration of Alumnae chapters  from   Washington DC,  Federal City ,  the collegiate chapters at Howard, Catholic, George Washington, university of the District of Columbia, American and Georgetown.     Click here for the Slide Show, it is well worth the 30 seconds it takes to sign up to the Kodak Gallery, Project ACE.  Pictures, Project Ace

From the host Toni Harper:

"Project ACE stands for Alumnae Collegiate Exchange, which allows alumnae chapters to mentor our collegiate sorors while encouraging them to remain active after they graduate from college.  We try to keep our activities fun but still have impact.  Sister Soldier was a perfect opportunity for us because each Chapter could work on their own to collect items".

On April 30, in Baltimore, MD, a third Packing Party occurred in the city, due to the efforts of a dynamo named Germaine Leftridge.  Germaine's day job is President of GBL Sales, Inc, headquartered in Columbia, Maryland.  Her company creed is "every client deserves and will receive quality, professional, courteous service, without exception."  Need I say more?  The Sister Soldier Project is treated like one of her treasured clients.  Germaine is also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.  Germaine first introduced us to Morgan State University and several Baltimore based women's organizations in March 2010, at the time packing and shipping 200 boxes. She next brought us to her church, the People's Community Church, which shipped off another 200 packages in October, 2010.

Finally, Germaine introduced the Project to the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc at Morgan State University. The sorority selected the Sister Soldier Project

as one of its 2011 public service efforts and, together with our friends at Morgan State, announced their intention to pack and ship a record 500 boxes at one packing party! After re-reading their email and double checking by phone that an extra zero had not been inadvertently added, I exclaimed "wonderful", hung up and said to myself, "we can do this,  "yes,  we can"......"how are we going to do this?"

It was clear that such a huge event required the collaboration of two hair care manufacturer sponsors. I turned to the firms that have supported the Project from its inception and have always-always-been there for us. The two Chicago based companies, friendly competitors that have come together before for the Sisters......Luster Products, Inc and Organic Root Stimulator. Germaine was indispensable, coordinating their involvement plus that of other vendors, which supplied personal care and toiletry items for the event.

Morgan State University selected its Calvin and Tina Tyler Ballroom as the site for the event; plenty of room, even for the eventual almost 200 people who participated in the actual packing.  The tag team of Delta Sigma Theta sorors, friends, Morgan State students and faculty plus other local organizations' volunteers, such as the YWCA, all performed brilliantly.  Their full-throttle energy, preparation, organization and coordination, critical for any event this large, contributed to a complete success, topped off by a nearby USPS location again coming to our doorstep.  WBFF Fox TV 45, Baltimore, attended the event and aired its coverage that Saturday evening.

Much appreciation to Lynn Middleton and Micheline Dean, amazing coordinators for the event itself.  Our biggest concern is always the fundraising for postage money, now $10.95  per box (still a bargain).        Whenever I spoke to Lynn about the funds, her answer was simply " I've got this, " and she did.  Lynn also secured the most adorable letters from school children around the country.  She collected well over 500, so I brought the remaining letters back to enclose in packages we ship from our home base. We have already heard back from some soldiers, how special it is to  hear from the young people.  I ran out of titles for Micheline, she was major domo of Shipping and Receiving, Event Manager, Banquet Manager, she was everywhere!  Thanks to them and to all of you!

The Project was also recognized by both the City of Baltimore and the Governor of Maryland with Certificates of Appreciation. A truly wonderful time was had by all! Check it out Pictures

Thank You to our Supporters

Despite our record month, we returned home to find a wait list of over 50 names!  The demand for hair care products is still steady and strong.  Apparently, many of the military Exchanges and PXs in the region are downsizing. Proper hair care products will be even more difficult to find in the Middle East Theatre.

Therefore an extra big thanks to Brenda Perry with the Chris Gadson American Legion Auxiliary in Daytona, FL, providing postage to ship 40 packages to the women serving in the Middle East Theatre.

And , to our consistent supporters around the country; J. Barbieri, Dr. O/California , H. Haley , and L. Gilliam/Illinois,  C. Bridgeford/ North Carolina,  A & R Weisgarber/Texas, and new contributors, D. Allen/Texas,  K. Harris/Delaware, R. Mitchell/KY, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority , Inc Kappa Epsilon Zeta Chapter, NY, and L. Gilchrist, a Sister Soldier paying it forward.

The always amazing Adam Lambert Fans, especially S. Sullivan/FLA.  The Glam fans continue to send FYE and GNL CD's to enclose in the packages, along with very touching notes.

Upcoming Packing Parties

Next up, on May 31,  the Sophisticated Walkers of S.E. Washington, D.C., hosted by Barbara Kenner, will box and ship 30 care packages. It's a repeat packing party for this wonderful group.

Then, on June 11, an event hosted by the Washington Math Science Technology (WMST) Public Charter High School Class Reunion 2011, in Washington, D. C. The class of 2001, celebrating its 10th Anniversary, is joining with the Classes of 1999 and 2000 to pack and ship 100 boxes.

And stay tuned for big, big news about the September Packing Party in Long Island, NY!

The Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, and Air Women Say It Best!

I am so pleased with all of the great things I have heard about your organization.  I know to some it may be less critical to receive care packages with hair products but it is essential to some to have quality hair care items not just out of convenience but for overall health.  Many females deploy and forget or lack knowledge of basic hair care and are forced to spend hundreds upon redeployment to recondition and revamp their hair.  These packages as well as all volunteer items give us reassurance that we are not in the "forgotten war" and what we do here is important and not in vain.  Thank you not just for the packages but for thinking of others and most of all, thinking of us. Many Blessings, Kemetta Gary

I stumbled across the Sister Soldier Project website while doing some research on care packages for ethnic females. I think what you guys do is awesome, as I'm pretty sure you all know how difficult it is to maintain at home, let alone in a war zone. It would be extremely helpful to receive a care package from you all since our options are limited.  I hope to hear from you all soon. Thanks in advance. SPC Melo, Yeraldin

Thank you for your continued support of the Sister Soldier Project.

All the best,
