Pet Peeves:
People that lie to me.

Dislikes:
I don't know, I don't have many dislikes, but I don't like Brussel sprouts.

Favorite Color:
Black.

First Job:
Farming, milking cows at age 10. George Walker Farm end on Sherburne Flatts. Paid $0.50 a day plus room and board.

Also worked for my Dad. Don't know if it counts though cause it was for free. He was the first employee at Killington Ski Area.
Who do you most look up to?
My Dad, he taught me a lot and gave me my work ethic.

Something everyone should know about you:
People know everything there is to know about me, not much there they don't know. I do have a pretty hot temper sometimes.

Best advice you've ever received:
Ohh my god I've received a lot of advice! Probably work hard, stay out of trouble. Keep your nose clean and tend to your business.

Best thing about your job:
I get paid! I like the people that I work with.

Howard, you've been with the company since the beginning, you've got to have a good story you can share.
I got a lot of stories that I can't share!

Ohh probably back in the early '90s, the day Doug fell asleep in the crane in Burlington. That was one of those couple-dayers. We were setting up the recycling plant on Pine Street, been working a few days straight, had motel rooms but never got to use the keys. It was early morning and Doug fell asleep in the crane probably around 3 am. There was 8 of us there, we were taking turns hiding somewhere to take cat naps, when Doug fell asleep, we all snuck out and went to the motel to sleep. Got back there the next morning at 8 am and he was standing there with coffee and doughnuts, never said a word and we just got back to work.
Aerial Lift Training
Training On-Site at the Moran Demo
Aerial lifts were needed at the Moran jobsite during the demolition process.

Joe Matteri and Isaiah Coltey from the Safety Department reviewed the safety procedures with the crew at the site, and went over the inspection requirements for operating the piece of machinery.

The group took a test on the knowledge they gained through the training, and the equipment was inspected prior to use. Each participant then performed tasks to demonstrate their understanding of the machine operations.

Soon we will be receiving a lift to reach the top of the building. It will reach 135 feet high - and also has the ability to go out 75 feet at 35 feet high.

Pittsford Salt Shed
We began work a couple of weeks ago on a new salt/sand shed to be installed at the Pittsford Transfer Station.

This involves grading and subbase, an asphalt pad and a precast concrete block foundation with a steel tube superstructure.

We plan on finishing everything up for the Town before the snow flies!
Update from Chris Adams
Chris competed in The Bass Federation National Semi-Final event on Lake Champlain in South Hero, Vermont a few weeks ago.

Chris weighed in 17.5 pounds of smallmouth bass for the 5-fish limit - just missing the national championship birth by a few ounces.

"Despite having a competitive catch and being that close to winning for Vermont, it was a frustrating day as I was around the winning fish all day but just had trouble getting them to bite. One more bigger fish would have gotten me the win but that's fishing - you win some you lose some." - Chris Adams

Good Catch / Near Miss Update
Your efforts are appreciated!
We saw an increased number of Good Catch / Near Miss submissions in September - a total of 11 for the month!

We are learning a lot from these submissions and hope to continue preventing accidents before they happen while further developing our safety culture. Please continue to always look out for one another, do not be afraid to speak up if you see an issue and report it to your supervisor.

Our new equipment inspection process is helping to discover and fix issues before any further problems occur. At one site, a hazard was identified in the work area which prevented damage to equipment and property. These inspections help to ensure our equipment is in working order, a critical component in keeping us safe.

Shout out to the managers and their teams for Good Catch/Near Miss submissions for the month of September:

Zach Thompson.....5
Todd Deuso............3
Dan Caputo............2
Brad Matteson........1
Great work for the month of September and let's see if we can get even more participation for the month of October!
Good Catch & Near Miss Program

Situational awareness and an eye for safety are the foundation of employee wellness at Casella Construction. The Good Catch & Near Miss Program recognizes employees who take action to keep us all safe.

A Near Miss is an event that’s been recognized in which no employee is injured, or property damage is sustained, but could have given a slight change in variables.

A Good Catch is the recognition by an employee of a situation or condition that had the potential to become an incident but did not due to corrective action taken and/or prompt intervention.
