Weekly Fun In the World's Borough - August 12
Kristin Dausch is on a mission. The multi-tattooed, music-loving Midwest transplant wants to establish a lesbian bar in Astoria. It hasn’t happened yet, so Dausch has been organizing pop-ups with performances, food, crafts, and promotions by nonprofits. Dausch brings the fun to Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City with Queer Cafeteria on Aug. 13.
Famous Brazilian chain Fogo de Chão will open an Elmhurst branch in a few weeks. It'll feature an open-air bar where gaucho chefs will prepare dishes over an open flame. Picanha (prime cut of the top sirloin) and Fraldinha (bottom sirloin with strong marbling) will be house specialties along with premium filet mignon, bone-in cowboy ribeye, beef ribs, and lamb chops.
To satisfy curiosity, increase tech skills, and maybe even conquer the world, cybernauts will flock to the Wiki World’s Fair at Queens Museum on Aug. 13. Attendees will learn how to influence the website’s content via articles, photos, data input, and translations. They'll also participate in "lightning talks" on mapping, translation, and other topics.
Over the past quarter century, MoMA PS1 has presented Warm Up with the best in live and electronic music. The LIC museum branches out on Aug. 12, Aug. 19, and Aug. 26 with Summer Fridays. The new series presents DJ sets by new artists and Warm Up alumni along with bites by Mina’s and access to exhibitions. (Like this one and this one.)
It’s not going to be hot and humid forever. The Shops at Skyview will host an End of Summer Bash on Aug. 20. A Bubble Tea DIY is a main event, and participants receive a free mini shaker and apron set. Carnival games, face painting, balloon animals, a 360-degree photo booth, a live DJ, and a clown are also planned. Attendees will also be able to swap children’s books.
Two Food Crawls will eat through Woodside and Jackson Heights on Aug 13. The fun kicks off with pork BBQ sticks at Ihawan and Nepalese momos at Himalayan Yak. The tour continues to Al Naimat Sweets & Restaurant for Pakistani treats and the Tong food truck for Bangladeshi fuchka. The final bites will be Colombian beef and cheese patties at the Arepa Lady.

Samantha Chillemi-Berenz is full of love. Yelp's Queens Community Manager is also full of great suggestions on local dining. Currently, she’s raving about Tony's Beechhurst Deli, which won best sandwich in New York State in a current Yelp survey. She’s also enchanted by The Bomb at Sal, Kris, & Charlie's Deli in Astoria and the subs at Brother’s Ravioli in Howard Beach. For other lovely local items, surf to MadeinQueens.

True to its name, #WontonWednesday means 2-for-1 wontons at The Nest in South Richmond Hill. The all-day deal is good for any flavor. Located at 125-17 101st Ave., The Nest mixes Guyanese and Caribbean cuisines. (That means plenty of spices, chutneys, tropical fruits, seafood, flagrant marinades, and rum-enhanced drinks.)
