Dear Friends of The Blue Purl,

How will you remember the year 2020? Wait, don’t answer that, let us tell you how we will remember it.

One day last month, two precocious 10-year-old girls came into the shop all excited to take up an adventure in knitting. They were smart, eager, cute as buttons and super enthused when we told them about Ravelry. Well, the next day, the girls came dragging in. “We’ve been up all night on Ravelry,’’ they exclaimed, and left with knitting needles and yarn that somehow only cost $2, which is all they had in their pockets.

A few days later, a note in blue crayon showed up.
“Dear Shoplady,
We all wanted to say thank you so much for the yarn and the knitting needles! We are so grateful that the Blue Purl is a thing and there are people like you in the world.’’

This is how we will remember 2020, not as a time of fear, suffering and hardship, though it was. We will remember it as a time of uplifting moments, a time when we all, each and every one of us rallied. Small deeds make big impacts. It was a time of coming together, of lifting each other up.

How will you remember 2020? We know that we cannot control everything that happens to us, but we have control how we respond.

Ok, to be fair, we cannot say goodbye to 2020 fast enough. But memories are selective, and we want to cherish those things that gave us a moment of joy, something we’ve accomplished, something funny. And we are asking you to do the same. Please share with us something that gave you pause to smile this past year; share it on our Facebook, or Instagram, or just send us an email, or tell us when you are in the shop. It can be about knitting/crochet - or not...

Let’s all head into 2021, not numb from an unprecedented troubling year, but energized by all we have accomplished.

Let's send out this year with gratitude and a smile.

At Blue Purl we are grateful for so many things. We are thankful for our friend Cherie, who kept everyone together by hosting a (virtual) knitting table via Saturday Zooms and to our team sticking with us as we reinvented our concept of community and what it means to be your neighborhood yarn shop.

We really are glad The Blue Purl is a thing. We hope you are too.

What's New?
Blanket Weather
It's hard to resist the peaceful feeling of getting cozy under a knitted blanket with a warm fire while waiting out a winter storm.
Sharon's Glampling Blanket
Can knitting a large blanket be fun? It is when it's Sharon's Glamping Blanket by Casapinka. Tam joined the knit-along back in November and made the largest size in 3 weeks. Leave it to Casapinka to come up with a fun way to knit a blanket. Each section is only a few rows, so you feel accomplished quickly. Changing colors regularly keeps the knitter interested and there's enough easy mindless sections to keep the Netflix binge rolling too! The pattern calls for Berroco Vintage Chunky but Tam made hers with Sandnes Garn Kos. Both works out beautifully. The pattern can found in Ravelry and all yarns are available online or in store in our Aran or Bulky section. By the way, there's no deadline for the knit-along, join in anytime!
Afternoon Nap
The name says it all for this throw. Using aran-weight yarn, held double on a US 15 needle, you could have this done before the next snow storm. We love Plymouth Homestead, Sandnes Garn Kos or Berroco Vintage Chunky for this. The pattern is free on Ravelry. Find the yarn in our Aran or Bulky section online or in the shop.
Reversible Afghan to Knit
A simple knit in worsted weight on a size US 10 needle, this blanket is a great next step beginner project. Knit in 1 piece, there's no seaming or picking up stitches. Per the designer, "All you need to know is how to knit and purl and keep cozy!" We have kits set up in the shop with pattern included, ready for you to get your cozy on.
Very Last Minute Gifts!
Seagulls Cowl
Using only 2 skeins of Woolfolk Flette on a US6 needle, the Seagulls cowl makes a great luxury gift for under $50. The pattern uses a simple cable repeat throughout the cowl to give definition to this ultra soft boucle-like yarn. This can be easily knit up in time for holiday gifting or gift the kit of a luxury yarn to a deserving knitter. Pattern is sold separately on Ravelry, kits are available online or in the shop.
Happy Hipster
Check out Wendy's Happy Hipster. Knit in 2-3 days, you could have a few of these done in time for the holidays. We've updated our kits with new color combos. Kits are available online or in the shop.
Gifts for the Knitter
Just in case you know someone lost on ideas for you talented fiber folk, here's a few hints to throw their way.
Needle Sets
The ultimate knitter's tool- a complete set of needles for all your future projects. We have kits in our favorite brands- Dreamz, Karbonz, Addis and Lykke. Most kits have needles sized 4-11, with 24", 32" and 40" cords. Some kits are beginner kits, so have fewer needle sizes, some are just for 16" circulars, some are only double pointed needles and of course we have crochet hook kits too. Find them online or in store. Feel free to call or email us to discuss which kit works best for you.
New Sandnes Garn Colors
Have you seen our new colors from Sandnes Garn? Let's just say, we had to keep Yiba from running away with one of the bags when she opened the box. The colors are available in all the bases we carry, Alpakka Ull, Kos & Tynn Silk Mohair. They can be found online or in store.
Learn to Knit Kit
This is a great gift! If you know someone who wants to learn the joy of knitting - kick start them with this lovely kit! The book has great illustrations and is easy to follow. Choose the color of Berroco Vintage you would like and we'll wind it - or save it, in case they would like to exchange it. And aren't our new bags cute?!
Holiday Kits
We still have kits left in our holiday kits. Each bag includes yarn, pattern, and is packaged ready for gifting. Knitters may want to forward this hint to their non-knitting gifters...
Fun New Notions
Sometimes, it's the cute little markers, progress keepers and supplies that keep knitters moving through all those rows of stockinette. We just restocked our supplies in these goodies.

Also, check out the Blue Purl Needle Tracker- New Year's Resolution anyone? Keep track of what needle sizes & lengths you own and easily access it on this small handy card. These are free with purchase in store. Just ask us for them at checkout. One per customer please.
Hooked
We can't leave out our favorite crochet blanket- the One Big Granny Square.

It uses beautiful Noro Silk Garden in 4 colors and it does all the color change work for you!

This Netflix-friendly piece is a soothing project to reach for after a long day. We just restocked these kits online and in store. Each kit includes the pattern.
