Caulk Now, Before Winter's Chill

Simple leaks can sap home energy efficiency by 5% to 30% a year, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. That means it pays to seal up gaps with caulking and weatherstripping.

Take a close look at places where two different building materials meet, such as corners, around chimneys, where pipes or wires exit and along the foundation. Use the incense test: carefully (avoiding drapes and other flammables) move a lit stick along walls; where the smoke wavers, you have air sneaking in. And heating or cooling sneaking out.

In another method, have someone on the outside blow a hair dryer around each window while you hold a lighted candle inside. If the candle flickers or goes out, you need to caulk or weather strip around the frame.

Low-income households can qualify for an average of $6,500 worth of weatherization improvements to their homes through government programs administered by each state. Find out about your state's program by contacting local energy agencies.

The Ford Story

In 1963, the Ford Motor Company introduced one if its most famous engines in company history. The legendary 427 cubic inch V-8 engine was born for the racetracks, but soon Ford started offering them as an option for street vehicles. Ford's slogan then was "Total Performance" and their new 427 dominated like no other engine before it. This was one of the most potent engines offered by any manufacturer at the time. The dual 4 barrel carburetor version was rated at 425 horsepower, but actually some produced close to 500. This was when 200 horsepower V-8's were the norm.  The list of cars this engine was installed in is the stuff of legends: the lightweight Galaxies, NHRA record holding Fairlane Thunderbolts and Carroll Shelby 's incredible 427 Cobras. Even the 1966 Lemans winning Ford GT-40's had NASCAR spec 427's powering them. I can only imagine the reaction from the European sports car crowd experiencing the roar of the 427 at full throttle for the first time. The 427 was a formidable opponent  on the NASCAR super speedways, dragstrips and winding road courses all across the world. Ford built this engine with almost bulletproof components and backed them up with numerous bolt-on parts for even more power. Street brawlers such as the 1966 427 Fairlanes were forces to be reckoned with on late night boulevards across America.  Ford has produced performance engines for decades, starting with the immortal Flathead V-8 in the 1930s to the current 2011 5.0 liter Mustang engine.  During the 1960s, the incredible 427 was their state of the art answer during the horsepower wars among domestic car manufacturers..
