Putting the Social in Marine Science Policy
Dr. Ana Spalding brought her Marine Social Science expertise to a stellar team of Marine Scientists in this important work published in Science Magazine. They propose a science-based, policy-relevant framework—The MPA Guide—to categorize, evaluate, and plan Marine Protected Environments (MPAs).
The MPA Guide enables smart planning, design, and evaluation of new or existing MPAs by informing decisions about scientific, societal, and policy priorities and facilitates evaluating progress on international conservation targets. It also examines MPAs’ effectiveness across protection for climate mitigation and adaptation, social change, and comprehensive marine spatial planning.
News and Updates Across the School
Oregon Secretary of State Shemia Fagan gave the 2021 Governor Tom McCall Lecture in Public Affairs. This lecture honors Gov. McCall's commitment to the highest ideals of public service and enables us to bring in notable people who exemplify his excellence in their own lives. In her conversation with us, Sec. Fagan helped us understand what motivates her own commitment to serving Oregonians and the many duties of her office. We encourage you to watch and learn about what she and her office are doing for you!
Current MPP Student Victoria Moreno has been awarded the prestigious John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship. She joins a cohort of 73 finalists who will be placed in federal government offices in Washington, D.C. for one-year fellowships beginning February 2022. Victoria aims to help develop interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to solving marine and coastal natural resource issues. Victoria is advised by Dr. Ana Spalding.

SPP Alumni - Making a Difference in Our World
Daniel Hauser (MPP '13) is the Oregon Center for Public Policy's Director of Strategic Policy Projects, where he leads the Community-driven Economic Justice initiative and the Center's policy work on equitable taxation and affordable housing. He is grateful to work at the intersection of good policy and strategic politics - fighting for the change low-income Oregonians and Oregonians of color need. Daniel serves as the President of the Aloha Community Library Association and on various public boards and commissions in the Portland metro area.

Arlyn Moreno Luna (MPP '15) is a PhD student in the Critical Studies of Race, Class, and Gender program at UC Berkeley and was recently awarded the Graduate Student Research Award from the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment. Arlyn was born and raised in Mexico, migrating to the U.S. as a teen.

Erik Chi is a 2020 OSU graduate with a double major in Economics & Political Science. Asked why he decided to stay at OSU to pursue his Masters in Public Policy degree, he noted that it's a field of study with many opportunities and so much to learn. Erik says he's confident the faculty at OSU will be able to guide him in whichever direction he chooses. With the skills he builds Erik hopes to continue his studies in the field of political science.
Mohamed Elkaramany (PhD '20) is a food security advocate and the Director of the Egyptian Food Bank’s (EFB) Growth Lab Department.
