The Importance of regular check-ups...

"An ounce of Plaque prevention is worth a pound of cure."

You may have noticed that we contact our patients when it's time for your scheduled check-up. As Benjamin Franklin once said, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Just like your car needs regular maintenance, such as an oil change or cleaning the fuel injectors, your teeth and gums also need a regular check-up and maintenance for optimal health.

Dental plaque is a bio-film, that develops naturally on the teeth. Like any bio-film, dental plaque is formed by colonizing bacteria trying to attach themselves to the tooth's smooth surface. The result is a sticky bacterial plaque that builds up on your teeth. The oral cavity contains the only known anatomical aspect of the human body that does not have a regulated system of shedding surfaces; the teeth. Dental plaque starts to harden within 48 hours, and in about 10 days the plaque becomes dental calculus (tartar), which is hard and difficult to remove with normal brushing. Deposits of this hardened tarter build up and live on gum tissue, teeth, and crowns.

When you visit us for a cleaning and check-up, in addition to a thorough examination or your teeth and gums, and the appropriate x-rays, our hygienists work to achieve the highest level of oral "cleanliness", above and below the gum line. We are able to clean and remove hardened plaque buildup that you are not able to. If left unchecked, plaque build up leads to gum loss, gum disease, and cavities. We also check for periodontal issues such as gum infection and check that your teeth are free of cavities and other oral issues. With regular checkups, we are able to diagnose and prevent problems from developing, and help safeguard your most valuable asset, your health.

To keep plaque under control, have your teeth cleaned professionally on a regular basis. In addition to brushing and flossing daily, use an antimicrobial mouthwash to reduce the bacteria in your mouth. During your visit with our hygienist, feel free to ask for a demonstration of the best way to brush your teeth and floss. Ask us about the best cleaning schedule for you.
