October 17, 2025 Volume 3 - Issue 10

Dear Saint Families and Friends:

“Home is not just where we come from. Home is where we choose to belong.”

-Jeanette LeBlanc

Greetings from Berks Catholic! Happy Spirit Week and Homecoming! One of the things I always looked forward to at Homecoming was to see former students come back to their alma mater and visit. It always brought back happy memories when I would see former students and catch up with them about college, or their job, their family and life, in general. Now that I am here a couple of years, it is so exciting to have some graduated Saints come home and visit that I actually know. At Graduation each year, I remind our graduates that this is their home and they should come back to visit us. In the last two weeks, as fall breaks are occurring, Saint graduates are indeed coming back to BC. What a joy to see them and hear their stories! While I am not a graduate of our schools, BC is where I choose to belong. So, if you are a Cardinal, a Blue Jay or a Saint come back next week and visit us on Homecoming night next Friday. I can’t wait to see you! Have a great weekend.

It’s a great day to be a Saint!

A Time to be BOLD!

15O SAVES!

Congratulations to Junior Gianna Fiore of the Girls’ Soccer team who recorded her 150th career save against Oley Valley High School

Congratulations to the following Saints who represented BC at the Penn State Berks Latino Forum, an event that celebrates Latin heritage throughout the region. The Saints were: Emma Dominguez ’26, Mya Monroig-Acevedo ’26, Adrian Polanco ’26, Jacob Saldana ’26, Rubi Encarnacion ’27, Ennybel Mejia ’27, Janiel Gutierrez ’27 and Heriel Ramirez ’27.

Congratulations to the Aevidum Club and their moderators, Mrs. Hennessy and Miss Giblin, for their work last week highlighting World Mental Health Awareness Day. The club received a thank you note from a parent that read, in part: “Thanks so much for your time, effort, and all you do to make this club all that it is…I am very touched and grateful that my daughters attend a school that highlights and prioritizes mental health.”

Congratulations to the Field Hockey team who defeated Wyomissing 2-1 in an Overtime Shootout to advance to the BCIAA Semifinals Playoff. The game winning overtime goal was scored by Sophomore Cassidy Arentz. Freshman goalkeeper Kinsley Fetrow recorded her 100th career save during the game and also saved a huge penalty shot in the first overtime. Terrific job, ladies!

Congratulations to the Boys’ Cross Country Team for qualifying for the PIAA District 3 Cross Country Championships.

Congratulations to Football Coach Dave Stahler who received recognition online from local sportswriter Paul Roberts. Paul wrote, in part: “Just wanted to give credit to Dave Stahler on how he handled the ending of [the] football game. Berks Catholic got a first down at Columbia’s 5-yard line with just over 2 minutes left. BC was leading 37-0. Coach Stahler decided to take a knee. Classy move.”

Thank you to many Saints who assisted in some way to help make the Diocesan Teacher Convention a tremendous success. They included:

  • Coach Stahler and the members of the football Team who helped set up vendor tables on Sunday.
  • Mrs. Bobb and the Choir who sang so beautifully at Mass.
  • Mrs. Smith and Senior/Junior members of Student Government who served all day at the convention.
  • Mr. Scollick and his tech crew making sure sound and light were working.
  • Fr. Kuna and the altar server team who served at Mass.

What's Happening

School Mass

Our next school Mass will take place Tuesday, October 28th at 9:00 a.m. in the Franco-Post Auditorium. Parents, guardians and families are always welcome to attend. If you plan to come to Mass, please sign in at the Main Office before coming down to the auditorium.

Goals for the Year

For the last three weeks, I shared with parents and guardians the goals that I had set for the current school year. For the next few weeks, I plan to share one goal each Friday and reflect on it. As the year moves forward, I will let families know how we are doing with achieving each of the goals that have been set.

  • Goal #4 is to complete the Evaluation of the Community “House System” for possible implementation in the 26-27 school year. The House System is a unique take on Homeroom in a different way and different level. It sets up a system where students can mentor and be mentored; they will have an adult who will serve as another set of eyes to support and care for them. We understand this will require a change of thinking on the parts of the participants, parents and teachers. But the House System is not something new. It is over 500 years old. We had some good first steps last year as we visited and spoke with schools who currently have the system in place. We will continue to do this in the first semester. We have some initial excitement among the students who participated in the research. We have support from the diocesan Office of Education. My hope is that this will set us apart from the other Berks County Schools. This could be an opportunity for us to be BOLD!

End of the First Quarter

One academic quarter down! Our first academic quarter ends next Friday, October 24th. Please encourage your Saint to finish the quarter strong academically and to complete and turn in any missing assignments.

Senior Skip Days

A practice in some schools has started called Senior Skip Days where Seniors just take the day off. Last week the Seniors decided that Friday was going to be just that. We had several parents contacting us believing it was the school who made this decision for the skip day. Please know, we do not condone Senior skip days. This is NOT a school-sanctioned event. If a parent decides he/she is letting their Senior Saint stay home and calls him/her out, that is their prerogative. But for Seniors who just skip or cut the day with no parental notice, they will serve detention for missing the school day. All Seniors who miss the day are also responsible for any academic work they miss. It is the teacher’s decision to not allow a student to make up a missed test or quiz without a doctor’s note for absence. Thank you for working with us on this issue.

Cap and Gown Assembly

Attention Senior Families: We are happy to share that we have partnered with Jostens this year to provide our Seniors with official graduation products. Jostens will be at school to meet with Seniors on Monday, October 20th at 8:00 a.m. The seniors will be able to order their graduation attire during the assembly. Jostens has other celebration items as well and will showcase those items to the students and explain them in some detail. The deadline for these orders is January 30th. All orders will be done online. The link will be given to the seniors during the assembly.

Winter Dress Code

The winter dress code will go into effect on Monday, October 27th. Please review the following updates to ensure students are in compliance. All students are required to wear a sweater or quarter-zip over their school uniform shirt. Female students must wear black opaque tights instead of black socks and may choose to wear a white button-down dress blouse in place of a polo shirt. Please refer to the handbook for year-long dress code policies, particularly regarding skirt length and jewelry. Male students must wear a white button-down dress shirt with all buttons, including cuffs and top button, fastened at all times. Shirts must remain tucked in, and the approved school tie, available in the school store, is required. Please review the handbook for additional year-round expectations related to belts and grooming. As we enter the colder months, let’s continue to show pride in our school by being bold in meeting and exceeding our dress code expectations.
