The Blank Canvas Question: What Will It Say?

What the new year asks beyond “what should I make?

Howdie!

Happy Thursday!

A new year arrives the way a blank surface does—full of promise, quietly demanding choices. Choices deeper than “what should I make?”. It asks “who am I now—and what choices will convey who that is?

We don't figure out who we are in one big, single moment. We become ourselves slowly, through hundreds of small moments layered on top of each other. Layers that require understanding the difference between who we are and the persona we present to the world. Self-definition is internal, shaped by values and the integrity with which we act. Persona is the external version others see—via our behavior, the roles we play, the expectations we meet or maintain.

We communicate both in ways we take for granted:

  • how we choose to dress
  • the way we show up for others
  • the things we reach for
  • what we pay attention to

Every choice is a sentence articulated in a soundless, universal language.

Bowl full of doll heads waiting for stories.

Shelves loaded with blank porcelain.

Untouched fabric.

As I face the unfinished projects in my studio, I see each as the beginning of a new conversation.

They represent a truth that is seldom said out loud:

"When we choose the behavior, we choose the consequences."

The bravest creative act each of us faces every moment is deciding what will be the focus of our attention. What part of us is asking to be expressed now?

The future I long for will be a result of the choices I make today. And because today I am different than yesterday, every choice has its own, new, sunrise.

I will pause before I start. Consider my options. Ask myself honest questions. Choose gently. Choose honestly. Mindful that the seed that I plant today will become tomorrow’s harvest.

What will you devote your attention to in the days ahead?

Bye for now,

Nora
