A Message from our PTA President, Kamela Aboussie
Dear Bradfield Families,
I hope you're all enjoying a fun and relaxing three day weekend! I hear people say all the time, “Remember when we started school after Labor Day?” But honestly, how nice is it to spend the first couple weeks getting housekeeping items out of the way? SO, shall we consider Tuesday our 80’s/90’s version of the first day of school?!
And speaking of the 80’s and 90’s, I got a call from one of my best friends this week, Sam Flores. Sam is the namesake of the beloved Sam Flores, his father, who dedicated his career as Bradfield’s head school custodian. Sam raised his family in a home on the Bradfield campus at the corner of Douglas and Mockingbird, the location which is now called Sam’s Corner.
Sam was going through old family photos of his dad, and wanted to bring some by Bradfield for me to see. Going through the photos with Sam, we were both in tears. And then as an added treat, Dr. Hilton was in her office at the time, so she and Sam were able to meet, hug and share sweet sentiments about our wonderful school and its special history.
Sam’s house on the corner of Douglas and Mockingbird was such a bright spot in the comings and goings of the Bradfield neighborhood. All three of Sam’s sons, Sam, Josh and Johnny went to Bradfield, MMS and graduated from Highland Park High School. It was common to pass by the Flores’ home on a bike ride or on a trip to Highland Park Village, see one of their smiling faces playing outside and stop for a visit. The entire family represents the absolute best of HPISD, service, hardwork, integrity, community, warmth and lasting friendship.
Here’s a text Sam sent me this week, “Being at Bradfield made me so happy and thankful for the sacrifices our parents made for us...so kind of the Lord to allow our family to continue seeing the fruit of my dad’s labor through friends like you.”
Enjoy this treat below, a tribute to Sam Flores, our first Bronco Legend!
Wishing you all the wonderful week!
Love,
Kamela Aboussie
