The Blessings of God

The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy…. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous. They are more precious than gold.

~Psalm 19:7

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God

~Romans 13:1

At times people struggle with all the laws and rules they are expected to follow. Sometimes they may ask, how about my freedoms? They may struggle with the fairness of it all.

As adults, I think we intuitively know the laws and rules are there to protect us and keep us from causing harm to others. But beyond that, can you imagine your life without rules and laws?

Imagine if everybody was totally free from laws and rules. It would be chaos. There would be no need to stop at traffic lights or stop signs. We would have a tough time trusting others, or buying food, without knowing there are laws to protect us. It would have us live in constant fear and worry.

The bible verse above tells us that God’s rules are sure and righteous and and more preciouos than gold. God’s laws lay out what a righteous life would look like, calling for honesty, caring about others, and sharing what we have with others in need. Indeed if all those that follow the Judeo Christian traditions lived as God has asked us to live, it would be more precious than gold.

Rules and laws from God and government set boundaries to our lives. We know where the edge is, and can live confidently within those boundaries. Some of us may cross the line from time to time, but it is never a comfortable thing to do. Penalties of all kinds can ensue; guilt, remorse, sometimes public shame or loss of status or money.

These laws help us live a gracious and confident life. This kind of treasure is a real blessing.
