Did you know CitySquash has more academic staff than squash staff? We pride ourselves on the strong curriculum we provide to our students at every academic phase -- elementary school through college. From phonics instruction to physics tutoring, we are there for our team members throughout their journeys as students. We are excited that everyone is back to school -- including some of our alums who are now working as educators! |

IN COLLEGE
Academic and Athletic Success in Higher Ed
| |
50 CitySquashers headed into college classrooms this fall. Throughout the year, they can expect check-ins and visits from our staff, academic support and tutoring, mental health counseling as needed, job and internship guidance, and help with renewing financial aid applications. When they are in the Bronx, there are gatherings with other CitySquash college students and opportunities to train with our squash coaches. Thanks to our College Success Scholarships, students can apply for financial assistance from CitySquash for expenses not covered by financial aid. Above, Joey and Ashanti, CitySquash teammmates, hang out at the Franklin & Marshall squash courts during pre-season. We are extremely proud of our students for their 92% college persistance rate.
IN BOARDING SCHOOL
The Campus Experience
| |
About half of CitySquash high school students choose to attend boarding schools. This year, we have students attending Berkshire School, Blair Academy, Canterbury School, The Hotchkiss School, Indian Mountain School, Kent School, The Masters School, The Rectory School, and St. Andrew's School. Boarding school students receive visits from CitySquash staff as well as virtual tutoring and mental heath counseling as needed. For those interested, CitySquash staff coordinates private squash lessons as well as transportation to and from squash tournaments. We help boarding school students line up summer opportunities, and we work alongside their schools to support their college application processes. Above, Luis heads to squash practice at Rectory!
IN THE BRONX
Essays, Algebra, and Analysis
| |
Our students who stay local for high school continue to receive academic enrichment and support through CitySquash. They attend at least three academic sessions per week -- one is dedicated to homework help and the other two are for academic instruction. We focus on essay structure, literary anaylsis, and assuring that Algebra 1 skills are strong. Along the way, there is the goal of college readiness, and eventually we work through the college application process.
IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Fun and Fundamentals
| |
Our youngest team members join us when they are just 8 years old! The goal is to help them fall in love with learning and to support the formation of strong habits that will serve them throughout their careers as students. This year, our 3rd graders will read Ways to Make Sunshine, our 4th graders will read Fish in a Tree, and our 5th graders (pictured above in their schoolyard) will read Ban This Book. Along with reading novels together, our elementary school students are taught phonics as we work to support their reading and literacy skills. Math foundations and writing skills are taught as well. In our elementary school program, our team members focus on forming a community, asking for help when needed, and learning to believe in themselves and support each other. Along with two days of academic programming, elementary school students also participate in Activity Club where they do experiential learning in the areas of art, science, cooking, and more.
IN MIDDLE SCHOOL
Motivation through Middle Grades
| |
Three afternoons a week, our middle school students receive homework help and academic enrichment from CitySquash. They practice writing skills using The Writing Revolution (TWR) model, they work to solidify math skills in line with the Common Core State Standards, and they read novels as a group. To start this year, 6th graders will be reading City of Embers, 7th graders will read Esperanza Rising, and 8th graders will read Kindred. Along with our academic programming, 7th and 8th graders focus on the high school application process. CitySquash works closely with our partner middle schools to make sure all efforts are coordinated to support our team members.
