Blacks Are Few in U.S. Radio Engineering
The recent swell of debate and social tension about race in the United States has brought additional focus on the experiences of Black radio engineers employed in the industry.
When news stories discuss the percentages of minorities in radio jobs, their focus is usually on ownership or radio business management. But the Black population is definitely underrepresented in U.S. radio broadcast engineering, most technology observers agree. Why that is, and what should be done about it, are less clear.
Radio World reached out to a number of African-American technical professionals who hold positions in radio or associated businesses to ask about their experiences in broadcast engineering. Some told us that Black engineers are sometimes reluctant to speak about their obviously low numbers in the field. Several engineers we contacted declined to be quoted.

Asset Buy, LMAs Bring Black Information Network To Four Big Markets

Exactly two months ago, iHeartMedia responded to the call for greater social justice in the aftermath of the murder of African American George Floyd by launching the first "comprehensive national audio news service dedicated to providing an objective, accurate and trusted source of continual news coverage with a Black voice and perspective."
With the launch of BIN: Black Information Network under the leadership of veteran programmer Tony Coles, largely underperforming AM radio stations in a host of markets became the nucleus of the Black News/Talk network's group of broadcast facilities. Only, four key African American markets were absent from the roster.
That's just been resolved, thanks to Beasley Media Group and a station acquisition iHeart is about to file with the FCC, with Kalil & Co. as the broker.
An asset purchase agreement has been signed that will add WUST-AM 1120 in Washington, D.C. - a Class D daytimer that must sign off at sunset in order to protect KMOX-AM in St. Louis - to the iHeart/Washington family. WUST is already being branded as "DMV BIN 1120," thanks to an immediate LMA, and will be the lone AM in a station group comprised of WASH-FM, WBIG-FM, WIHT-FM, WMZQ-FM, WWDC-FM and WWDC-HD2 "104.7 WONK FM," a Federal government-focused talk station designed to compete against Hubbard Broadcasting's Federal News Network.

    Entercom Announces Diversity Action Plan

This Summer Entercom launched a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force, which CEO David Field says has been working on an action plan. The goal was to build a more diverse organization, a culture of inclusion and respect, and help foster a more equitable and inclusive nation. Here's what Field says the group came up with.
Here's the new action plan, according to a memo Field sent around to employees:
National Urban League Partnership
The National Urban League (NUL) is one of our nation's leading nonprofits focused on equity - ensuring African Americans and other underserved urban residents secure economic self-reliance, equal justice and civil rights. We will work with the National Urban League - nationally and locally - to deepen our understanding of economic and social justice issues within our communities and provide support for NUL programs through public service messages.
Partnership with Morehouse, Clark & Spelman HBCUs
We will deepen our connection with our nation's leading historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) through various actions to provide career opportunities and counseling, while creating a pipeline of diverse talent for key hiring needs within our organization.Read More

_Obrigado_ Feat. Henri Don Jeany _ Sam Carroll - GEORGE MITCHELL

Based out of Little Rock, Arkansas, veteran musician, and professional drummer George Mitchell is on the brink of releasing his debut single titled Obrigado on April 19th, 2019. Mitchell has an exceptional passion for music and has toured the world with his instrument of choice, namely, the drums.

Mitchell's debut single, Obrigado, also features the creative wits of Henri Don Jeany and Sam Carroll. The track has a funky vibe emerging from its prolific melody. Obrigado begins with a keyboard measure followed by an enchanting guitar riff amid the tune's overtones of jazz and soul. In certain sections of the track, we find the bass in conversation with the keys and in later sections the guitar. Every instrument's voice is sharply expressed. George Mitchell does an excellent job in hosting this exotic dialogue of rhythm with a superb drumming performance. Obrigado is a perfect debut and testimony of George Mitchell's love for the art.

'We Wear The Mask': West Side Kids Star In Music Video To Remind People That Masks Protect Others

The kids at the West Side nonprofit were excited to return after a pause in youth programming due to the coronavirus pandemic - but they need to be reminded often to wear their masks. Staff for the organization's Hope Jr. program for children and teens hope the song can make it easier for them to remember.
"We said about 10 million times, 'Put your mask up over your nose.' It felt like maybe there was a better way to do it," said Deanna Hallagan, who manages the Hope Jr. program. "It's the idea of trying to make a difficult situation a little more fun."
Now when staffers say the name of the song, "We Wear the Mask," the kids eagerly cover their faces and sing lines from the tune, Hallagan said.  MORE HERE

"The primary purpose of Soul! is neither to educate nor entertain, but to give people a chance to share in the Black experience. The show must do that first. Then it can educate and entertain. Soul! makes Blacks visible in a society where they have been largely invisible."

Those are the words from the late Ellis Haizlip, the producer and host of Soul!, the groundbreaking music-and-talk program that aired on public television and aimed at a Black audience. At a time when Black representation in the media was either lacking or tended to negatively portray African Americans, Soul! (which ran from 1968 to 1973 and was produced by New York public TV station WNET), proudly celebrated Black arts and culture. It not only featured a wide range of African-American musical guests (more on that later), but also notable figures from the worlds of film, dance, literature and activism. Among the many guests who appeared on the program included writers James Baldwin and Toni Morrison; poets Nikki Giovanni and Amiri Baraka; actors Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis; boxer Muhammad Ali; filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles; and activists Stokely Carmichael and Kathleen Cleaver. Long before Soul Train, The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Arsenio Hall Show, Soul! featured a Black TV show host and targeted an African-American audience; it was an outlet for the Black Arts movement that emerged in the 1960s and conveyed both empowerment and pride in the Black experience (full disclosure: I was a former intern at WNET in 2009). MORE HERE
