Inducted into the Alabama Blues Hall of Fame

Ruff, a 1984 graduate of Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, has gotten big results out of her small frame, big enough that she recently was inducted into the Alabama Blues Hall of Fame. On Sunday she will achieve another milestone - a long-awaited headline gig in Hampton Roads, performing a free show at The Vanguard Brewpub in Hampton.
She left home more than two decades ago to pursue a singing career in Florida. Her first record was never released, and after a 10-year hiatus, she started performing and recording again in 2007. She did one show in Portsmouth in 2009, just one singer on a multi-act bill at a legion hall, but this weekend's gig in Hampton will be her first homecoming under her own name.
"It's been so long, and I've wanted it so badly," Ruff said. "Now it's happening. I'm coming home after being inducted into the hall of fame, and my family and friends are going to be there. Every time I think of it, I just want to cry."
Her career took off in her early 40s, and since then she has released five albums, racked up lots of local and regional music honors, and earned the nickname Alabama Blues Queen. One of her signature songs, "Hip-Swinging Blues," even has its own line dance.

KENNY EDWARDS

Kenny Edwards. Born in Gretna, LA, he founded a band after his father (a horn player who once sat in with Louis Armstrong) purchased drums for Kenny. With typical aplomb, he says the band, "didn't go anywhere." A year or so later, when he was around 14 years old, he spent a year in New York with relatives. While there, he got to attend a show at the famed Apollo Theatre. Even now, the excitement of that show is still with him. He says there were 20 stars there, but "Guitar Red was the one who caught my eye. Had my heart in a thrill." He wanted and still wants to play guitar. Returning to Gretna, his focus soon changed to football but the yearning for musical expression remained. Years passed. He married, raised children and became a trucking professional. A few years ago, following a move to Mobile, AL, a city with a rich musical history, he began to think seriously about a musical career.

              DELTA  BLUES   MUSEUM

CLARKSDALE MISSISSIPPI

Many now-legendary musical artists were born and raised in and around Clarksdale: Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Son House, Ike Turner, Jackie Brenston, Sam Cooke, Junior Parker, and W. C. Handy, among them. Clarksdale was a major market for the Delta's constantly traveling musicians, and the likes of Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf, and Charley Patton are also associated with the city. Today, that historic blues culture is preserved for visitors while contemporary musicians carry on the great Delta blues tradition.

MRZBECKIE

MRZBECKIE ASKED US FOR A BIO ON SIR CHARLES JONES.

Sir Charles Jones  is an artist whose part-throwback, part-modern style of R&B is based on traditional Southern soul and blues. The vocalist, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist calls himself the Undisputed King of Southern Soul. He releases his music independently, outside the major-label system. Born in Ohio, raised in Alabama, and later based in Georgia, he received early support from  Marvin Sease  and began his recording career in 2000 with a self-titled album. Several of his full-length releases, including the debut,  Love Machine  (2002), and  My Story  (2008), have appeared on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Well into the latter half of the 2010s, he continued to record and remained a busy touring musician through small-scale gigs and soul and blues festivals alike.

BOBBY RUSH FOLLOWS UP GRAMMY WIN WITH SIGNATURE MIX OF BLUES, FUNK AND SOUL ON 'SITTING ON TOP OF THE BLUES' (ALBUM REVIEW))

Bobby Rush is more than a living legend. He is a living miracle. At 85 years old he not only continues to tour but still has the dancing moves that would make Mick Jagger, his junior by ten years or more, envious. Bobby's statement to this writer is one of the best musician quotes heard, "I'm the only one who crossed over but didn't cross out." In other words, he's managed to develop an Americana and mainstream audience through his association with Thirty Tigers and promoters while retaining his chitlin' circuit audience. This is Rush's follow-up to his 2017 Grammy winning  Porcupine Meat , electing to go on his own Deep Rush label with trusted cohorts and a reduced role for the former's producer, Scott Billington. The main captain this time is the multi-talented, versatile co-producer Vasti Jackson on  Sitting on Top of the Blues , an appropriate title given Rush's still growing stature. READ MORE
