As we close out the month of June—recognized nationally as Black Music Month or African American Music Appreciation Month—we are reminded of the power, beauty, and resilience of a culture that has shaped the world's soundtrack.

At The Boogie Report, we proudly affirm what we’ve always known: Every day is Black Music Day. Every month is Black Music Month. June simply gives us a moment to re-center, re-focus, and re-dedicate ourselves to the mission—to ensure that those who create the art are the ones who reap the benefits of their labor.

As we reflect and move forward in 2025, let us take a deeper look at the state of Black music today:

The State of Black Music in 2025:

  • Culturally Undefeated: From gospel to jazz, blues to hip hop, R&B to Southern Soul, Black music continues to be the heartbeat of innovation across genres, influencing sounds and styles around the globe.
  • Economically Underrecognized: While Black artists generate billions in revenue for the music industry, systemic inequities still deny too many their rightful share in ownership, royalties, and representation.
  • Digitally Empowered: Independent artists now have more tools than ever to produce, distribute, and promote their music without the traditional gatekeepers. However, access does not always equate to equity.
  • Historically Rooted, Future Driven: Today's music is built on the shoulders of legends—Sam Cooke, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, B.B. King—and yet it continues to evolve with bold new voices carving out tomorrow’s legacy.
  • Advocacy is Essential: The fight for fair compensation, creative control, and cultural preservation must continue—not just in June, but throughout the year.

As advocates, fans, DJs, broadcasters, and industry professionals, it is our duty to uplift, protect, and amplify the music and the people behind it. Let’s keep pushing forward, together.

Because Black music isn’t just a moment. It’s a movement.

The Boogie Report

Where the Music Lives. Every Day.

BLACK MUSIC LOOKING FORWARD

  • Growing Popularity and Influence: Black music genres, such as Hip-Hop and R&B, are extremely popular and influential, with Hip-Hop overtaking rock as the most popular genre in some areas. Trap music, a subgenre of Hip-Hop, currently dominates the music charts.
  • Genre Blending and Innovation: Black artists are pioneers in blending genres and creating new sounds. This is evident in artists like Pink Beard and Lil Nas X, who have collaborated with country music artists, and the diverse musical styles emerging today.
  • Continued Growth and Strength: The National Museum of African-American Music suggests that Black music continues to grow stronger and its reach is larger than ever, expanding across platforms, countries, and genres.
  • Historical Impact: Black music is deeply rooted in African-American culture and has played a pivotal role in American music history. Genres such as blues, southern soul, jazz, R&B, and hip-hop, all with roots in Black culture, have significantly shaped popular music worldwide.
  • Challenges and Progress: While there is undeniable success and influence, Black musicians still face challenges, including issues of fair compensation and representation in leadership roles within the music industry. Studies reveal that a large percentage of Black artists and music professionals have experienced racism and discrimination.
  • Impact of Streaming: Streaming services have revolutionized the music industry, providing Black artists with platforms to bypass traditional gatekeepers and reach a global audience. However, the current streaming compensation models raise concerns about fair payment for artists.
  • Community and Empowerment: Music plays a vital role in fostering a sense of community and cultural pride within the Black community. Efforts such as Black Music Month and organizations like the Black Music Collective underscore the significance of Black music and aim to empower Black artists.

In summary, the state of Black music is characterized by its undeniable success and influence, while also facing ongoing challenges that require continued attention and advocacy.

Why Include Radio in Your Promotional Mix

It's a Smart Move for Southern Soul Artists

In today’s ever-evolving music landscape, many Southern Soul artists have become heavily reliant on social media to reach their audience. While platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok provide fast, direct fan engagement, they’re not the only tools at your disposal—and ignoring radio could mean missing a critical piece of the puzzle.

Let’s be clear: social media is powerful, but radio remains unmatched in its ability to reach listeners where they are most attentive—behind the wheel.

According to the latest findings from Audacy’s Connected Car study, AM/FM radio continues to dominate the dashboard, even as newer vehicles are equipped with voice assistants, AI-driven features, and digital streaming platforms. In fact, two-thirds of drivers still consider local radio their primary source of in-car entertainment.

So what does that mean for artists trying to grow their fanbase?

It means that fans are still discovering new music, new personalities, and new events through their local radio stations. Nine out of ten listeners turn to the radio—not social media or mobile apps—for breaking news and local updates. And nearly 90% say they want their favorite radio stations and personalities accessible while they drive.

This is a massive opportunity for Southern Soul artists to build loyal followings.

Music fans trust their favorite DJs and radio hosts. When a beloved personality introduces a new track or artist, listeners pay attention. That endorsement carries weight—more than an anonymous stream or algorithmically placed post.

And let’s not forget the storytelling nature of Southern Soul. Radio provides the space for that emotion, those narratives, and that connection to shine through. It’s not just a place to play your song—it’s a platform to build your identity.

Here’s the bottom line: radio is not dying—it’s evolving. As dashboard technology gets smarter and more integrated, local radio remains the top in-car companion. If your music isn’t being serviced to radio stations, you are leaving fans—and opportunities—on the table.

If you’re serious about growing your reach and truly tapping into the Southern Soul audience, radio must be part of your promotional mix. Not instead of social media, but alongside it. Together, they’re a powerful one-two punch that can elevate your brand, expand your fanbase, and keep your name on the airwaves—and in the streets.

The dashboard may be smarter, but the soul of music discovery still lives on the radio. Don't miss your ride.

Southern Country Soul:

Where Southern Soul Meets the Heart of Country

cowboybootslede0508 image

In recent years, the Southern Soul genre has been undergoing a quiet but powerful transformation. Spurred by the crossover success of breakout stars like 803 Fresh and King George, a wave of Southern Soul artists are beginning to blur the lines between Soul and Country—ushering in a bold new hybrid sound known as Southern Country Soul.

At the forefront of this evolution is Jeter Jones, a genre-blending trailblazer whose music draws deeply from the lived experiences of Southern Black culture, yet resonates just as strongly with country audiences. His lyrics speak of love, loyalty, heartbreak, and celebration—universal themes wrapped in a Southern aesthetic that feels equally at home on a back porch or a country backroad.

This movement isn’t emerging from thin air. It’s rooted in the ever-growing Line Dance and Trail Ride culture—a subcultural phenomenon that has long thrived in Southern Soul communities. These gatherings, often held in rural towns across the South, celebrate music, dance, and Southern traditions. They serve as fertile ground for the merging of musical influences, where steel guitars meet soulful horns and bluesy storytelling is carried over a two-step rhythm.

Southern Country Soul is more than a musical experiment—it’s a cultural bridge. It reflects a shared rural identity between Black Southern Soul fans and traditional country listeners. The genre taps into the authenticity of small-town life, the bonds of community, and the enduring power of music to bring people together.

What’s remarkable is how this shift is expanding the audience for Southern Soul while preserving its integrity. Artists aren't abandoning the genre’s foundations—they’re expanding them. By embracing the country influence, they’re telling new stories, reaching new fans, and carving out a new lane that feels both fresh and familiar.

As we look toward the future, Southern Country Soul stands as a testament to the genre’s resilience and adaptability. It proves that Southern Soul isn’t confined by tradition—it’s fueled by it. And as long as there are stories to tell, fields to ride, and dance floors to fill, this sound will keep rolling—right down the dirt roads and into the hearts of a whole new generation.!"

Get ready to experience Southern Soul Love—the newest release from the incomparable The Lady Songbird Jinda. With a voice trained in the classical tradition and a soul rooted deeply in Southern musical heritage, Jinda delivers a stunning performance that bridges elegance and emotion in one unforgettable track.

Excellently produced and flawlessly arranged, Southern Soul Love is a powerful testament to Jinda’s versatility as both a vocalist and a storyteller. Her five-octave range soars with passion, while the groove-heavy instrumentation brings the essence of Southern Soul to life—smooth, sultry, and undeniably real.

This is more than a song—it’s a heartfelt embrace of the genre, crafted by a world-class artist who knows how to move both the heart and the hips. Whether you're a lifelong soul fan or just discovering the richness of this music, Southern Soul Love is the anthem your playlist has been waiting for.

Welcome to the sound of timeless love, Southern-style.

Spotlight on Tracy Bethea:

The Guiding Voice Behind WDIA Memphis

Tracy-Bethea image

In the storied history of Memphis radio, few voices have resonated with as much grace, passion, and purpose as Tracy Bethea. Today, we proudly salute Bethea, Program Director of WDIA 1070 AM—the iconic urban oldies and classic soul station that helped define Black radio in America.

From newsroom to boardroom, Tracy Bethea’s journey through the airwaves is nothing short of remarkable.

Her radio career began at just 19 years old in the WDIA newsroom, where she quickly earned her stripes in a male-dominated industry.

Listeners soon came to know her as “The Young One,” a voice of inspiration and warmth that would go on to define Memphis Gospel for over a decade.

But Bethea was never content with just one title or role. In the late 1990s, she undertook the ambitious task of helping to launch AM 990 The Light, a groundbreaking 24-hour Gospel station.

As Chief Operator and one of its most beloved on-air talents, she played a key role in shaping the sound of modern Gospel radio in Memphis—a seamless blend of tradition and innovation.

Her talents next found a home at 95.7 Hallelujah FM, where her leadership and creativity captured national attention.

Tracy's ability to craft engaging content, foster community connection, and elevate Gospel artists led to her being honored not once, but twice, as Stellar Award Announcer of the Year in both 1997 and 2016.

Today, at the helm of WDIA, Tracy Bethea oversees music programming, promotions, on-air talent, and community initiatives, carrying the torch of the station's legacy while steering it into a vibrant future. Her commitment to community radio, cultural preservation, and faith-driven broadcasting continues to make a lasting impact.

Beyond the studio, Tracy Bethea’s influence spans civic leadership and education. She served on the Memphis & Shelby County Commission, was inducted into the Emissaries of Memphis Music in 2015, and is a proud member of SAGMA, the Dove Awards, and the Memphis Association of Black Journalists.

A sought-after media consultant and speaker, Bethea gives back by mentoring young communicators as an instructor at the K.T. Whalum Jr. School of Public Speaking and by facilitating panels for the Gospel Music Workshop of America’s GAG.

Tracy Bethea’s legacy is one of resilience, vision, and voice—a voice that continues to uplift, inform, and inspire generations. Whether behind the microphone or behind the scenes, she remains a true radio trailblazer and a beloved figure in the soul of Memphis.

We salute you, Tracy Bethea.

Is It Worth It? Southern Soul Artists and the GRAMMYs' Ever-Shifting Goalposts

2026_grammys_nominations_show_day_key_dates_announcement_68_grammy_awards_STD-Hero_1644x925 image

As the Recording Academy announced its latest category revisions for the 2026 GRAMMYs—including the reintroduction of “Best Album Cover” and the debut of “Best Traditional Country Album”—one has to ask: Is it still worth it for Southern Soul artists to seek validation from an institution so skilled at exclusion?

The return of “Best Traditional Country Album” feels less like a celebration of heritage and more like a thinly veiled act of cultural gatekeeping. Coming on the heels of Beyoncé’s historic Cowboy Carter moment at the 2025 GRAMMYs—a project steeped in country’s often-overlooked Black roots—this new category reeks of retrenchment.

Rather than embracing the evolving sound of country music and its richly diverse contributors, the Recording Academy appears to be drawing a bright red line around what it deems “acceptable tradition.”

But what exactly is “traditional”? If it excludes gospel cadences, blues storytelling, R&B inflections, and African-American folk instrumentation like the banjo—a West African export—then perhaps it’s less about sound and more about identity. And that identity, historically, has been overwhelmingly white.

For Southern Soul artists—who sit at the intersection of blues, gospel, R&B, and country—the question becomes existential. Why continue campaigning for a seat at a table that keeps moving the chairs every time Black artists get too close to the center?

The GRAMMYs have a well-documented history of marginalizing Black music, often relegating it to niche categories while rewarding white artists for dabbling in Black sounds. Whether it's hip-hop, R&B, or now country, the Academy has shown a pattern: once Black excellence breaks through, the rules change.

So, is the GRAMMY stage even the right battlefield for Southern Soul? Or are we chasing a validation that does not—and perhaps cannot—reflect the genre’s cultural depth, regional loyalty, and intergenerational power?

Rather than chase institutions that tokenize, segregate, and reframe progress as appeasement, Southern Soul artists might be better served by fortifying platforms that already honor their contributions. The NAACP Image Awards, the BET Awards, the Soul Train Awards—all have shown greater consistency in celebrating Black music across its diverse forms. More importantly, they don’t wait for the culture to go mainstream before recognizing its brilliance.

And maybe it’s time to think even bigger: What would it look like for Southern Soul to have its own national stage? One not beholden to industry politics or backhanded compliments, but rooted in authenticity, community, and cultural pride?

Until then, every GRAMMY campaign by a Southern Soul artist runs the risk of legitimizing a system that has no intention of fully including them. The question is no longer whether Southern Soul deserves the GRAMMYs, but whether the GRAMMYs deserve Southern Soul.

Concert Review: The Chicago Blues Festival

A Reassuring Vision of the Future

Ms image

A few years ago, one could have summed up the state of the blues festival scene with the word “attrition.” Regular headliners such as B.B. King and Etta James have passed away, while Buddy Guy is on what he claims is his farewell tour (although it’s already been extended by a year). There will always be a crowd for white blues-rock guitar heroes, but a decade ago, the blues circuit was struggling to find artists who could both fill seats and satisfy the music’s aficionados.

Flash forward to early June’s Chicago Blues Festival, and any doubts about the blues having a future would be cast aside. Mavis Staples, sounding as glorious as ever at 85, was the headliner, but over the course of the weekend, no fewer than seven Black artists aged 31 or younger took the stage.
