| | ANTHONY Q. WALK THAT WALK | | WJR's Jackson Named Voice of Detroit People Mover | | |
Cumulus Media has announced that Lloyd Jackson, co-host of JR in the Morning on WJR-AM in Detroit, is named the official voice of the Detroit People Mover. Jackson becomes just the second voice ever used for the city's elevated public transit system, replacing the original announcer after more than 30 years.
As the People Mover marks its 38th anniversary, Jackson's familiar voice will soon be heard on all trains and platforms, welcoming and guiding passengers across the downtown loop. In addition to station announcements, he'll deliver special welcome messages from station platforms, lending a trusted presence to one of Detroit's most recognizable transit fixtures.
Jackson, a native Detroiter and award-winning journalist, has long been a morning staple on News/Talk WJR, where he is heard weekdays from 6-9am. Over his three-decade broadcasting career, he has earned honors from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, the Associated Press, and the Society of Professional Journalists.
"This is my town," said Jackson. "I grew up in Detroit. I can't wait for my grandkids to hear me - it's a legacy thing."
Robert Cramer, CEO of the Detroit Transportation Corporation and the city's Executive Director of Transit, called the partnership a natural fit: "When we thought about an unforgettable voice that truly embodies and embraces Detroit, Lloyd's was at the top of the list. His presence on the radio and ours in public transportation share more than just longevity-each moves the city forward with pride in our community and with a purposeful mission."
Steve Finateri, Regional Vice President and Market Manager for Cumulus Detroit and Ann Arbor, added, "Lloyd's voice is iconic in this city. For decades, Detroiters have started their mornings with him, trusted him for news, and connected with his warmth and authenticity. His voice doesn't just inform-it resonates."
Finateri called the new role "a tremendous honor-not just for Lloyd, but for all of us at WJR Radio."

| | Sam Green Revitalizes a Soul Classic | | |
Back in 1968, soul legend Eddie Floyd teamed up with Alvertis Isbell (also known as Al Bell) and Booker T. Jones to create the timeless classic, "I've Never Found a Girl (To Love Me Like You Do)." With its heartfelt lyrics, irresistible groove, and unmistakable Memphis soul sound, the song became an anthem of devotion and a staple in the golden era of R&B.
Now, decades later, that same soul is being reborn.
Enter Sam Green, a modern-day soul man with an old-school heart.

Backed by live instrumentation and a vocal delivery steeped in sincerity, Sam Green’s rendition doesn't just honor the past — it revives it. The horns punch.
The rhythm sways. And the vocals? They testify.
If you love real R&B…
If you cherish the grit and groove of classic soul…
If Southern Soul speaks to your heart…
You’ll feel this one.

Chris Connors, a longtime Columbia radio programming executive, has returned to the airwaves after being named Vice President of Programming for Glory Communications LLC, ending a six-month absence from the industry.
Connors' appointment comes after he was affected by corporate downsizing at Cumulus Media earlier this year, where he had served as Program Director for Urban AC station WLXC (Kiss 103.1) in Columbia.
Glory Communications, a Gospel music-focused company headquartered in Columbia, operates seven FM radio stations and seven FM translators serving South Carolina's Midlands and Low Country regions, as well as Augusta, Georgia.

Earlier in his career, Connors programmed stations in major markets including WFXC & WFXK in Raleigh and WMMJ in Washington, DC.
"Not only do I get to stay in my adopted home of Columbia (25 years), but I get to work with people in a format that makes it feel like home," Connors said of his new position.

| | Is It Worth It? Southern Soul Artists and the GRAMMYs' Ever-Shifting Goalposts | | |
As the Recording Academy announced its latest category revisions for the 2026 GRAMMYs—including the reintroduction of “Best Album Cover” and the debut of “Best Traditional Country Album”—one has to ask: Is it still worth it for Southern Soul artists to seek validation from an institution so skilled at exclusion?
The return of “Best Traditional Country Album” feels less like a celebration of heritage and more like a thinly veiled act of cultural gatekeeping. Coming on the heels of Beyoncé’s historic Cowboy Carter moment at the 2025 GRAMMYs—a project steeped in country’s often-overlooked Black roots—this new category reeks of retrenchment.
Rather than embracing the evolving sound of country music and its richly diverse contributors, the Recording Academy appears to be drawing a bright red line around what it deems “acceptable tradition.”
But what exactly is “traditional”? If it excludes gospel cadences, blues storytelling, R&B inflections, and African-American folk instrumentation like the banjo—a West African export—then perhaps it’s less about sound and more about identity. And that identity, historically, has been overwhelmingly white.
For Southern Soul artists—who sit at the intersection of blues, gospel, R&B, and country—the question becomes existential. Why continue campaigning for a seat at a table that keeps moving the chairs every time Black artists get too close to the center?
The GRAMMYs have a well-documented history of marginalizing Black music, often relegating it to niche categories while rewarding white artists for dabbling in Black sounds. Whether it's hip-hop, R&B, or now country, the Academy has shown a pattern: once Black excellence breaks through, the rules change.
So, is the GRAMMY stage even the right battlefield for Southern Soul? Or are we chasing a validation that does not—and perhaps cannot—reflect the genre’s cultural depth, regional loyalty, and intergenerational power?
Rather than chase institutions that tokenize, segregate, and reframe progress as appeasement, Southern Soul artists might be better served by fortifying platforms that already honor their contributions. The NAACP Image Awards, the BET Awards, the Soul Train Awards—all have shown greater consistency in celebrating Black music across its diverse forms. More importantly, they don’t wait for the culture to go mainstream before recognizing its brilliance.
And maybe it’s time to think even bigger: What would it look like for Southern Soul to have its own national stage? One not beholden to industry politics or backhanded compliments, but rooted in authenticity, community, and cultural pride?
Until then, every GRAMMY campaign by a Southern Soul artist runs the risk of legitimizing a system that has no intention of fully including them. The question is no longer whether Southern Soul deserves the GRAMMYs, but whether the GRAMMYs deserve Southern Soul.
