| | | | A Look at intellectual Property and Ai | | |
Protecting creatives from the unauthorized use of intellectual property is essentially the heartbeat of copyright law. In 1991, Warner Brothers and Biz Markie were taken to court by Grand Upright Music for using a portion of the song "Alone Again (Naturally)" by Gilbert O’Sullivan.
The court ruled that because copyright holders withheld permission to use the song and the label still released the song "Alone Again" by Biz Markie, the label had willfully committed copyright infringement.
The defense argued that sampling was widely and customarily used in the genre to which the judge responded by beginning his ruling with the biblical commandment "Thou Shalt Not Steal". A precedent was established that samples that have not been cleared are clearly copyright infringement.
Fast forward to today with the rapid penetration of AI in the music industry, existing legal precedent and the protective purpose of copyright law in the mix and we land on this question : Without licensing, how does compensation and credit attach and benefit the creator/copyright owner?

In This Week's Gospel Music Pulse
| | Johnnie Taylor, Denise LaSalle Among Latest Inductees Into Memphis Music Hall of Fame | | |
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Bluff City celebrated its rich musical heritage on Sept. 25 as six new legends were enshrined into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame during a star-studded ceremony at the Cannon Center. Nearly 700 fans, industry leaders, and fellow musicians gathered to honor the 2025 class, which included Stax Records hitmaker Johnnie Taylor, blues and soul trailblazer Denise LaSalle, and a moving tribute by Southern Soul star Karen Wolfe Bass.
Taylor, long revered as the “Philosopher of Soul,” was remembered for a career that bridged gospel, R&B, and soul, delivering classics like Who’s Making Love and Disco Lady. His induction underscored his enduring influence on generations of Memphis musicians and the broader soul tradition.
LaSalle, known as the “Queen of the Blues,” was celebrated for her decades of songwriting and performance success. A Mississippi native who became one of Malaco Records’ crown jewels, LaSalle carved out a space for women in Southern Soul and blues at a time when the industry was dominated by men. Stax icon Carla Thomas delivered the formal induction, while Karen Wolfe Bass — who began her career as one of LaSalle’s background singers — brought the house down with a heartfelt musical tribute. Wolfe Bass’ performance drew a standing ovation, highlighting the deep mentorship and legacy LaSalle left behind.
Also inducted were blues legend Robert Johnson, pioneering guitarist and label owner Cordell Jackson, Memphis broadcasting executive Art Gilliam, and versatile vocalist Wendy Moten. Gilliam, one of two living honorees this year, was recognized for his groundbreaking role as the first Black owner of a radio station in Memphis and the Southeast when he purchased WLOK in 1977.
Launched in 2012 by the Smithsonian-affiliated Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame now boasts 113 members, honoring not only performers but also the songwriters, producers, and business visionaries who shaped the city’s global musical identity.
For many in attendance, the evening was less about looking back and more about carrying the torch forward — a testament to the timeless spirit of Memphis music.

National Black Radio Hall Of Fame Hosts It's
2025 Induction Ceremony
| | |
**ST. LOUIS, MO - September 24, 2025** - The elite of Black broadcasting, both past and present, gathered at the Renaissance Hotel in St. Louis this past weekend for the 2025 National Black Radio Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The celebratory evening, which took place on Saturday, September 20, not only honored this year's inductees but also served as a springboard for an ambitious membership drive and the launch of the organization's highly anticipated "Encyclopedia of Black Radio's History, Pioneers and Technology."
The annual event, emceed by well-known producer and social influencer Jade Harrell, drew hundreds to the hotel ballroom as the organization continues its mission to preserve and celebrate the rich legacy of Black radio broadcasting in America. Bernard Hayes Sr., the National President of the National Black Radio Hall of Fame and a seasoned radio broadcaster credited with developing Black radio in St. Louis, presided over the ceremony that recognized broadcasters across various categories.
"Tonight we honor those who gave voice to our communities when few others would," Hayes told the assembled crowd during his opening remarks. "These inductees represent the very best of Black radio—pioneers who broke barriers, created opportunities, and shaped the cultural landscape of America through the power of broadcasting."
Encyclopedia Becomes Amazon's #1 New Release
In what many attendees described as the highlight of the evening, the organization unveiled its comprehensive "Encyclopedia of Black Radio's History, Pioneers and Technology." The groundbreaking publication, which has already become the number one new release in the History & Criticism category on Amazon, represents years of meticulous research and documentation.
The encyclopedia was authored by Mrs. Marsha Washington George, with editorial contributions from Mrs. Terri R. Stephenson and Ms. Phoenix Ascar. Mr. Rick Stephenson served as the illustrator, while Mr. Bernard Hayes Sr. and Mrs. Uvee Hayes contributed valuable content based on their extensive experience in the industry.
Marsha Washington George, who serves as Vice President of the National Board and Chair of the WERD Museum Project, is widely recognized as America's only African American female radio historian. Her previous work, "Black Radio... Winner Takes All: America's 1st Black DJs," established her as a leading authority on the subject. The new encyclopedia builds upon this foundation, offering an unprecedented look at the evolution of Black radio, its technological developments, and the personalities who shaped its history.
"This encyclopedia is not just a book—it's a testament to the resilience, creativity, and cultural impact of Black broadcasters throughout American history," said George during the presentation. "From the earliest pioneers who broke color barriers to today's influential voices, we've documented a legacy that deserves to be celebrated and studied for generations to come."
Membership Drive Gains Momentum
Following the success of the induction ceremony, the National Black Radio Hall of Fame announced an aggressive membership drive aimed at expanding its reach and influence. The organization, which currently boasts 13 chapters across the United States, including its headquarters in St. Louis, Atlanta, and Charlotte, is experiencing what Hayes described as "rapid growth."
"Our chapters are the lifeblood of this organization," explained Hayes. "Each one serves as a local hub for preserving regional broadcasting history, mentoring the next generation of media professionals, and ensuring that the contributions of Black broadcasters are never forgotten."
The membership drive offers several tiers, including a $100 annual membership fee for broadcasting professionals and a $25 student membership option for those currently pursuing education in the field. A lifetime membership is available for $1,000, which can be paid in installments of $142.85 per month for six months, with a final payment of $ 857.10, or in a single payment.
"We're not just preserving history—we're making it," said Uvee Hayes, Co-Founder and Senior Vice President of the organization. "Every new member strengthens our ability to document, celebrate, and build upon the legacy of Black radio in America."
A Legacy of Service and Education
Founded in 2010 as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable nonprofit organization, the National Black Radio Hall of Fame has undergone significant evolution over its 15-year history. In April 2016, the organization expanded its scope nationally, changing its name from the St. Louis-focused Black Radio Hall of Fame to the National Black Radio Hall of Fame.
The organization's facility, located on the campus of Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis, includes a museum showcasing memorabilia, exhibits, and displays honoring personalities who developed and shaped Black radio nationally. It also offers educational and scholarship programs that connect communities to increased higher learning opportunities through radio's rich and dynamic past.
"Our mission extends far beyond recognition," explained Bernard Hayes. "We're committed to education, preservation, and inspiration. Through programs like 'Kids Drop Da MIC,' we're nurturing the next generation of broadcasters while ensuring they understand the shoulders upon which they stand."
Looking to the Future
As the evening concluded, attendees were invited to participate in the organization's ongoing historical research projects and to support its expansion efforts. The National Black Radio Hall of Fame plans to open a new facility in Atlanta's historic Auburn Avenue district in the spring of 2026, further solidifying its commitment to preserving Black radio history nationwide.
"Tonight we celebrate our past, but we're equally focused on our future," Hayes told the audience in his closing remarks. "With the launch of our encyclopedia, the expansion of our membership, and the continued growth of our chapters nationwide, the National Black Radio Hall of Fame is ensuring that the powerful legacy of Black radio will continue to inspire and inform for generations to come."

| | New Music Alert: Check Out Fire Cracker By The Southern Soul All-Stars | | |
Who are the Southern Soul All-Stars? Quite simply, they are a Southern Soul, R&B/Blues collective, put together For The People & By The People (Uniquely designed in tribute & in homage of their aptly named record label.)
There is a unique blend of multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated Artists, Writers, & Producers, which will be a revolving door of t.b.d. talent, moving forward to & through the recording of their t.b.d. LP slated for release in the Spring of 2026. The lead single entitled "Firecracker" is a parody of the 1979 mega-hit of the same title, which reached number 4 on Billboards Hot R&B/Soul Chart by the group Mass Production. Southern Soul All-Stars loosely interpolate the aforementioned Mass Production's melodies & lyrics, in a playful poke at our 45th President, Donald J. Trump!
Even though there are no racial undertones in the lyrical content of "Firecracker," many at Mainstream R&B, Rhythmic & Top 40 radio, have steered away from even touching this record, simply out of fear of some type political retribution handed down by The President and his regime, amidst the cancelation of many talk-shiws and late-night broadcasts like Jimmy Kimmel that have simply spoken open, as well as honest & accurate truths & opinions about the present state of this Country under Trump. One thing's for sure: Southern Soul All-Stars will bite their tongues for noone! Whereas this is by no means a politically based group, ie, or , the viral aspect of this modernized version of "" will not be stopped!
Power to the people and even more power to the Southern Soul All-Stars for stepping up and defending their First Amendment right to "free speech" in today's ever-changing & evolving platforms to do so...

| | MAZE to Continue Legacy Following Frankie Beverly's Passing Through Estate Agreement | | |
The iconic soul band MAZE will live on following the death of its legendary leader Frankie Beverly last year, according to an announcement made Friday.
Through a licensing agreement with Beverly's estate, the band will continue performing under the MAZE name, led by several former members who had regrouped under the name TMF (The Music Forever) approximately two years ago.
The reconstituted lineup features Maze original member Roame Lowry, alongside longtime band veterans Larry "Bear" Kimmel, Vance Taylor, Calvin Napier, and Daniel Weatherspoon. New additions to the group include Joey Woolfalk and acclaimed singer Chris Walker.
The departure of these talented musicians from MAZE had disappointed longtime fans of the group, making Friday's announcement particularly welcome news for the band's devoted following.
Operating as TMF for the past two years, the group has been performing for audiences worldwide and has released a well-received album of original material. Now, with the rights to use the MAZE name, they will be able to perform both their new compositions and the extensive catalog of MAZE hits spanning nearly five decades.
Beverly, who founded MAZE in the 1970s, was considered a giant in the soul music genre. The band gained recognition for their smooth blend of soul, funk, and R&B, crafting a distinctive sound that earned them a dedicated fan base and critical acclaim throughout their career.
The licensing agreement ensures that MAZE's musical legacy will continue to reach both longtime fans and new audiences.

URGENT: Jazz 91.9 WCLK Faces Critical Funding Crisis Following $1.1 Billion Cut to Public Broadcasting
Atlanta's longest-running jazz station launches emergency fundraising campaign as federal support disappears
| | |
ATLANTA, GA – Jazz 91.9 WCLK, the Southeast's longest-running jazz station and a cornerstone of Atlanta's cultural landscape for over five decades, is facing an unprecedented funding crisis following the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's (CPB) loss of $1.1 billion in federal support for public media.
The dramatic funding cut threatens the survival of PBS and NPR affiliate stations nationwide, with WCLK—licensed to Clark Atlanta University—among those most severely impacted. The station now faces the immediate loss of its annual $300,000 programming grant and critical music licensing rights previously available through NPR affiliation.
In an urgent letter to supporters, WCLK General Manager Wendy F. Williams outlined the station's dire situation and launched an emergency fundraising campaign with a goal of raising $300,000 by November 30, 2025.
"For more than 50 years, WCLK has been a trusted voice in the Atlanta community and beyond—offering music, stories, and conversations that educate, inspire, and connect us all," Williams wrote. "These changes present a serious challenge—but also an opportunity for our community to unite in support of something we all value deeply."
The funding crisis extends far beyond Atlanta, threatening the fabric of public broadcasting across America. Jazz stations, cultural programming, and educational content that serve underrepresented communities face particular vulnerability as federal support evaporates.
A Call to Action for Jazz Lovers Worldwide
WCLK's plight represents a critical moment for jazz preservation and public broadcasting. The station has served as a cultural beacon, supporting emerging artists, preserving jazz heritage, and providing a platform for diverse voices in the Atlanta metropolitan area and beyond.
Williams emphasized that community support has always been essential to the station's mission: "This legacy would not be possible without the generous and unwavering support of our donors and sponsors. These contributions have sustained our quality programming and provided critical support that keeps us on the air."
Global Jazz Community Rallies
The crisis at WCLK reflects broader challenges facing jazz radio and cultural programming worldwide. As commercial radio increasingly abandons jazz and other art forms, public stations like WCLK become even more crucial for preserving and promoting this uniquely American art form.
Jazz educators, musicians, and broadcasting professionals are being called upon to support not just WCLK, but public radio stations everywhere that serve as guardians of musical heritage and cultural diversity.
How to Support WCLK
Listeners, jazz enthusiasts, and supporters of public broadcasting can contribute to WCLK's survival through:
- Direct donations to the station's emergency fund
- Becoming monthly sustaining members
- Corporate sponsorship opportunities
- Spreading awareness through social media and community networks
- Advocating for restored public broadcasting funding at federal and state levels
The station's fundraising campaign represents more than financial necessity—it's a test of whether communities will step forward to preserve institutions that serve the public good when government support disappears.
A Legacy Worth Preserving
As the longest-running jazz station in the Southeast, WCLK has been instrumental in developing Atlanta's reputation as a major cultural center. The station has provided career-launching opportunities for countless broadcasters, supported local musicians, and maintained connections between Atlanta's rich musical heritage and contemporary jazz scenes worldwide.
The current crisis demands immediate action from all who value jazz, public broadcasting, and community-supported media. The next few months will determine whether this vital cultural institution survives to serve future generations.
For more information about supporting WCLK or to make a donation, visit the station's website or contact the development office directly. The future of jazz radio in Atlanta—and the broader mission of public broadcasting—depends on community response to this critical moment.
The global jazz and broadcasting communities are encouraged to share this story and support WCLK's emergency fundraising efforts. Every contribution, regardless of size, helps preserve an irreplaceable cultural resource.
