Introducing the Boogie Report Charts Page

The Boogie Report is proud to introduce a new and dynamic feature — the Boogie Report Chart Page, a platform where music influencers, DJs, and tastemakers can post what’s hot in their area.

Unlike traditional charts, the Boogie Report does not attempt to create a “scientific” ranking system for Southern Soul music. Why? Determining the true popularity of a song in this genre involves more than just one metric. It takes a combination of sales and download data, streaming and engagement statistics, and radio airplay — all vital factors that shape the pulse of today’s Southern Soul movement.

With that in mind, we’re not guessing or manufacturing lists out of thin air. Instead, we’re shining a light on the music that’s gaining real traction and wide acceptance across the ever-expanding Southern Soul landscape.

In addition to our Southern Soul features, we’ll continue to spotlight Gospel Music on the Boogie Report Gospel Music Pulse, and we’re adding DJ Pool Charts to highlight what's moving on the dance floors and in the streets.

Music professionals and influencers are invited to join this growing community. To submit your charts or local reports, simply email us at boogie365@gmail.com

.

At the Boogie Report, we’re constantly expanding our universal reach — connecting the people, the music, and the movement that keeps Southern Soul alive and thriving.

New Music From William Bell

Strange Fruit” set the template for what a protest song should be when Lady Day began performing it in 1939, and the song has been remade many times, including by Andra Day for the soundtrack of the film The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

The song’s timelessness and continued relevance is a sad commentary and searing indictment on the racial disparities and injustices that exist in this country 85 years after Billie Holiday first sang “Strange Fruit” at the Café Society in 1939.

And that is what inspired William Bell to make his addition to the protest song canon, “Strange Fruit is Still Hanging.” “Strange Fruit is Still Hanging” is a blues number that begins with Bell making a reference to George Floyd’s murder at the hands of police and comparing it to a lynching.

Living Legends Foundation Makes History with First-Ever Atlanta Gala, Honoring Music Industry Icons

In a groundbreaking move that sent shockwaves through the music industry, The Living Legends Foundation, Inc. (LLF) brought its prestigious 34th Anniversary Awards Gala to Atlanta for the first time in the organization's illustrious history this past weekend.

The Boogie Report was on the scene in the heart of Buckhead, where music royalty, industry executives, and cultural pioneers gathered for what can only be described as a historic celebration of Black music excellence.

The star-studded affair served as both a homecoming and a powerful testament to the enduring influence of those who've shaped the soundtrack of our lives.

LLF Chairman David C. Linton and President Azim Rashid welcomed hundreds of distinguished guests from across the nation, setting the tone for an evening that would honor the true architects of Black music culture.

"People often ask me, what makes a living legend?" Chairman Linton posed to the captivated audience. "Well, the first part is obvious — but the second part isn't about age or how many years you've worked. It's about your impact on the culture. How have you moved Black music forward? How have you impacted the lives of those who make the music, or those who bring it to the world?"

JIMMY JAM & TERRY LEWIS STEAL THE SHOW

The evening's crown jewel moment came when legendary production duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis accepted the Ray Harris Lifetime Achievement Award. The multi-GRAMMY winners and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees were celebrated for their four-decade reign, crafting timeless hits for icons including Janet Jackson, New Edition, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, and Boyz II Men.

In a moment of genuine humility, Jimmy Jam reflected, "I take a snapshot of my day to check I'm with who I am supposed to be and doing what I should be doing. When I look around this room, I know I am right where I'm supposed to be." Terry Lewis kept it real, adding, "We are just two guys who like to make music. You all are the ones who made them hits."

INDUSTRY POWERHOUSES RECOGNIZED

The night continued with a parade of well-deserved honors. Broadcasting titan James L. Winston, President & CEO of the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters (NABOB), claimed the A.D. Washington Chairman's Award for his relentless advocacy for Black-owned media.

Media maven Cynthia Horner, publisher and CEO of Right On! Digital, took home the Media Icon Award, while radio innovator Kashon Powell (iHeart Chicago VP of Programming) secured the Jerry Boulding Radio Executive Award. The beloved DeDe McGuire earned the Frankie Crocker Radio Personality Award for her nationally syndicated morning show excellence.

LEGACY AND IMPACT CELEBRATED

In a touching tribute, Karla Redding-Andrews accepted the Legacy Award on behalf of her mother, Zelma Redding, honoring the family's dedication to preserving Otis Redding's legacy through youth music education.

The evening also spotlighted rising industry forces, with RCA Music's Samantha Selolwane earning the Music Executive Award and Louise West of West Entertainment Services receiving the Kendall Minter Entertainment Advocate Award, presented by GRAMMY winner Anthony Hamilton.

Quality Control Music's Kevin "Coach K" Lee and Pierre "P" Thomas closed out the honors with the Impact Award, recognizing their revolutionary influence on modern hip-hop and entrepreneurship.

ATLANTA'S FINEST TURN OUT

The red carpet was ablaze with star power as Atlanta's entertainment elite showed their support. Da Brat and Jesseca Dupart commanded attention alongside super-producer Polow Da Don, 112's Q Parker, Tulsa King's Jay Will, and Tyler Perry universe stars Kron Moore and Terrell Carter.

The celebration, expertly hosted by Skip Cheatham of The D.L. Hughley Show, featured a show-stopping performance by acclaimed flutist Ragan Whiteside, who delivered a soulful medley spanning from Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis classics to Atlanta hip-hop anthems.

As the curtain fell on this historic evening, one thing was crystal clear: The Living Legends Foundation's inaugural Atlanta gala wasn't just an event — it was a cultural moment that reminded us why these legends continue to shape the music that moves our souls.

NEW YORK (AP) — When Tre Little two-stepped in his cowboy boots at the BET Awards preshow this summer, he was overcome with joy and gratitude.

"I used to watch this on TV every year, and I'm now performing," said the 22-year-old Atlanta-area resident. "I started crying … tears of joy."

He joined Southern soul singer 803Fresh to perform his massive viral hit, "Boots on the Ground." Released in December, the trail ride-inspired song and accompanying line dance have become an anticipated moment at African American gatherings, like family reunions, weddings, graduations, parties and cookouts.

The "Boots on the Ground" dance, which includes the rhythmic clacking of folding hand fans as the South Carolinian belts "Where them fans at?," was created by Little during a work lunch break. After hearing a snippet on TikTok, he played around with a routine and posted it, without much thought.

"I usually get my little six views from my family … I took a nap and when I woke up, it was at 100K," said Little, who is now in demand nationwide teaching line dance classes and hosting events. He has even been approached to create new dances. "It's bringing people together to do a dance and share laughter."

Chicago Blues Legend Billy Branch Announces New Album' The Blues Is My Biography’ Out November 7

c94dd936-d0aa-4266-ac22-b1c6e2a5fad5-1024x1024 image

Billy Branch is excited to announce the forthcoming release of The Blues Is My Biography on November 7th. This largely autobiographical album will be the first release for Rosa’s Lounge Records, a Chicago-based label.

Billy’s latest single, unveiled today, is “Hole in My Soul.” It’s Billy’s statement about the essential importance and effect of connecting with the Blues, and features Bobby Rush contributing vocals and harmonica. “Hole In Your Soul” is an expression I’ve heard countless times over the years,” Billy states, “there was a Blues deejay in Chicago at WVON who used to say it all the time, and other artists have said it as well. It was time to put it into a song because I believe it to be true.”

The highly anticipated album, The Blues Is My Biography, was produced by Larry Batiste and recorded at Infinite Studios in Alameda, California, and JoyRide Studio in Chicago, IL. In addition to Bobby Rush, the album also features Shemekia Copeland, who adds guest vocals to “Begging For Change.” Billy’s band, The Sons of Blues, provides the instrumental accompaniment, while Larry Baptiste arranged the horns.

The music on the album runs the gamut from the soulful strains of “Toxic Strain”” and the rugged R&B that identifies “All Your Bluff,” to the propulsive pacing of “Roaches,” the resolve and reflection shared in the title track, and the tell-tale call of “The Harmonica Man.” There’s an emphatic emotion echoing through “Toxic Love,” while “Real Good Friends” comes across as a good-time, upbeat romp. “How You Living?” is a pure hip-hop gem, an ideal companion piece to “The Ballad of the Million Men,” which finds Branch and company incorporating a solid reggae rhythm. The most telling song on the album may well be “The Harmonica Man.” “It’s as autobiographical as you can get, ” Billy insists.

“Every song on this album has special meaning to me in terms of my journey,” says Billy, “This is the most important work I’ve ever done, and it’s the best work I’ve ever done as well.”

At the age of 10, Billy bought his first harmonica at Woolworth’s and taught himself to play. A few years later, he delved into the Chicago blues scene and was mentored by such iconic individuals as James Cotton, Junior Wells, Carey Bell, Willie Dixon, and Big Walter Horton. In 1975, he gained his first high-profile experience performing with the Willie Dixon Chicago Blues All-Stars, a role he held for seven years. It eventually led to his signing with Alligator Records, where he performed on 1978’s Living Chicago Blues Volume Number 3 and 1990’s Harp Attack, featuring him alongside Carey Bell, Junior Wells, and James Cotton. He calls that album “My diploma and my PhD.”

In 1977, Billy became a band leader for the first time when he formed the group The Sons of Blues. This ensemble currently includes drummer Dionte “Musik “Skinner, keyboardist Sumito Ariyoshi, aka Ariyo, bassist Ari Seder, and guitarist Giles Corey. The prestigious Chicago Blues Festival honored the band in 2007 on their 30th anniversary and again ten years later, for their 40th.

In addition to recording 15 albums with The Sons of Blues, he’s contributed harmonica playing to over 300 albums by such notables as Vince Gill, Billy Gibbons, Stephen Stills, Koko Taylor, Lonnie Brooks, Lou Rawls, Johnny Winter, Taj Mahal, Son Seals, Mike Mills of REM, Kevin Cronin of REO Speedwagon, and scores of others.

As an ambassador for the blues, he has taken his music to the People’s Republic of China a dozen times, to the halls of Parliament in Turkey, to South and Central America, Mexico, Israel, throughout Europe, Africa, and Australia. He has also performed at numerous high-profile festivals, including the Chicago Blues Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Long Beach Blues Festival, and the San Francisco Blues Festival.

Billy is an award-winning musician, actor, and educator who carries the torch for the promotion and preservation of the blues. He’s been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame and has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his 50-year career. He’s received an Emmy, three Grammy nominations, three Blues Music Awards, two Living Blues Awards, a pair of Keeping the Blues Alive Awards, the JJus’Blues Willie Dixon Lifetime Songwriters Award, and the Charles Walton Award for Outstanding Contribution to Black Music, to name just a few. HHe’salso served on the Grammy Board of Governors, the Board of Directors of the Little Walter Foundation, and the Blues Foundation Board of Directors.

Billy’s work has also been included in the Grammy Museum’s Woody Guthrie installation, “Songs of Conscience, Sounds of Freedom.” And he’s also received two proclamations from the City of Chicago acknowledging his ongoing commitment to maintaining the legacy of Chicago Blues.

“My wife, Rosa, keeps saying that my life is like a movie,” Billy nods. And indeed, the variety of music and messaging on the album fully reflect Billy’s commitment to craft and communication.”

New Music Alert: Check Out Fire Cracker By The Southern Soul All-Stars

Who are the Southern Soul All-Stars? Quite simply, they are a Southern Soul, R&B/Blues collective, put together For The People & By The People (Uniquely designed in tribute & in homage of their aptly named record label.)

There is a unique blend of multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated Artists, Writers, & Producers, which will be a revolving door of t.b.d. talent, moving forward to & through the recording of their t.b.d. LP slated for release in the Spring of 2026. The lead single entitled "Firecracker" is a parody of the 1979 mega-hit of the same title, which reached number 4 on Billboards Hot R&B/Soul Chart by the group Mass Production. Southern Soul All-Stars loosely interpolate the aforementioned Mass Production's melodies & lyrics, in a playful poke at our 45th President, Donald J. Trump!

Even though there are no racial undertones in the lyrical content of "Firecracker," many at Mainstream R&B, Rhythmic & Top 40 radio, have steered away from even touching this record, simply out of fear of some type political retribution handed down by The President and his regime, amidst the cancelation of many talk-shiws and late-night broadcasts like Jimmy Kimmel that have simply spoken open, as well as honest & accurate truths & opinions about the present state of this Country under Trump. One thing's for sure: Southern Soul All-Stars will bite their tongues for noone! Whereas this is by no means a politically based group, ie, or , the viral aspect of this modernized version of "" will not be stopped!

Power to the people and even more power to the Southern Soul All-Stars for stepping up and defending their First Amendment right to "free speech" in today's ever-changing & evolving platforms to do so...

From Hustler to Hitmaker, The Evolution of Mike Clark Jr.

17594575262228 image

Mike Clark Jr. is breathing new life into Southern soul, and he’s doing it his way. In a recent sit-down on Posted on the Corner, the Macon, Georgia native got real about his journey, proving that his old-school sound is matched by a strong work ethic.

Clark’s musical roots run deep. Growing up listening to old-school classics with his dad, a former MC, and a mother who sings, music was always in his blood. This family influence shaped his unique sound, which blends R&B with the soulful traditions of his home state. Many fans are surprised to learn he’s so young, often assuming the mature voice behind the music belongs to an older artist. This surprise, however, has only drawn more supporters to his corner

DeDe McGuire: The Blueprint for Grace, Grit, and Greatness

IMG_8884-scaled-e1759932350467 image

There are radio voices that fill the airwaves — and then there are the ones that fill the culture. DeDe McGuire, host of DeDe in the Morning, has done both. And this year, her legacy was officially sealed when she was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame — one of the highest honors in broadcasting.

For those of us who know her story, this isn’t just an accolade. It’s a homegrown Texas victory — a reflection of decades of persistence, purpose, and poise.

DeDe McGuire’s journey began in Killeen, Texas, where a young woman studying telecommunications took a receptionist job at a country radio station just to get her foot in the door. One day, she was invited on-air for playful banter.

The station owner’s wife told her she had “a great voice and an unbelievable personality” and should be trained for radio — but not there. They said they couldn’t “have a Black girl hosting.”

And that rejection became DeDe’s redirection. She landed her first hosting opportunity at a Black-owned local station, later working her way through multiple markets across the country. She recalls that the biggest challenge wasn’t learning radio — it was convincing people that a woman could be a successful radio host.

Her persistence paid off. When DeDe arrived at Dallas’s K104 (KKDA-FM) — initially to fill in for someone for a day or two — she blew minds. Under Chris Arnold’s advisement, DeDe was hired full-time after just one show. She had found her calling and her community.

Ann B. Walker, Trailblazing Columbus Broadcaster and Community Voice, Dies at 101

c83e2536-6556-4275-bb4c-1c8562d856da_1920x1080 image

Columbus, Ohio — Ann B. Walker, a pioneering journalist and broadcaster who broke racial and gender barriers throughout her storied career, has died at the age of 101.

Walker’s influence on Central Ohio’s media landscape spanned more than seven decades. In 1949, she began her career at the Ohio Sentinel—one of Columbus’s first Black newspapers—where she served as a journalist, editor, and columnist. Her sharp reporting and commitment to truth made her a trusted voice in an era when few Black women held such positions in journalism.

By 1952, Walker had transitioned to radio, working at Columbus station WVKO as assistant news director, community services director, and on-air host of The Ann Walker Show and Youth Speaks. Her work connected listeners across generations, addressing issues that shaped the daily lives of Columbus’s Black community.

In the 1970s, Walker joined WLWC (now WCMH-TV), where she made history once again—becoming the station’s first woman in broadcast management. During her tenure, she interviewed some of the most influential figures of the time, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., activist Angela Davis, and then-presidential candidate Jimmy Carter.

Her impact extended beyond the newsroom. In 1970, Walker served on the Columbus Consumer Protection Committee, advocating for fairness and accountability on behalf of citizens. In 1980, she created and hosted a new public affairs program for WCMH-TV, cementing her legacy as a media innovator and community voice.

That same year, President Jimmy Carter appointed her as special assistant to the director of The White House Public Affairs Office—making her the first Black woman from Franklin County to receive a presidential appointment.

In later years, Walker continued her work through her consulting firm, Ann B. Walker & Associates, which she founded in 1991.

Rev. Dr. Edward Lewis Sr. of Bethany Presbyterian Church remembered Walker as a force of nature. “She was stoic, direct, and didn’t mix words,” he told 10TV. “Through Ann’s work in the media, she humanized the Black community, provided good responses to our community that helped us have a voice.”

Ann B. Walker’s pioneering spirit opened doors for generations of women and journalists of color who followed her path. Her life’s work leaves an enduring mark on journalism, civic engagement, and the history of Columbus itself.

𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐨𝐧, 𝐃.𝐂., 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 — Go-Go music, the heartbeat of the nation’s capital, is once again stepping onto the global stage. Kevin “Kato” Hammond, guitarist, songwriter, author, and cultural documentarian, has officially landed on the 𝟔𝟖𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐌𝐌𝐘® 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐭 with his new project, 𝑵𝘦𝘰 𝘎𝘰𝘎𝘰 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘭: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘒𝘢𝘵𝘰 & 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘭𝘭𝘺𝘒𝘢𝘵𝘴.

The album has been placed in 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐀𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐦 and 𝐀𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫.

While Go-Go is officially recognized as the music of Washington, D.C., the Recording Academy’s screening committee has once again categorized Hammond’s work as 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐚. For Hammond, this is not a setback but an affirmation:

To further connect listeners with the music, Hammond offers a 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐲𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 (𝐏𝐃𝐅) alongside the album, underscoring his commitment to making Go-Go accessible to new audiences.

URGENT: Jazz 91.9 WCLK Faces Critical Funding Crisis Following $1.1 Billion Cut to Public Broadcasting

Atlanta's longest-running jazz station launches emergency fundraising campaign as federal support disappears

jazz-wclk-clark-atlanta-university-02 image

ATLANTA, GA – Jazz 91.9 WCLK, the Southeast's longest-running jazz station and a cornerstone of Atlanta's cultural landscape for over five decades, is facing an unprecedented funding crisis following the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's (CPB) loss of $1.1 billion in federal support for public media.

The dramatic funding cut threatens the survival of PBS and NPR affiliate stations nationwide, with WCLK—licensed to Clark Atlanta University—among those most severely impacted. The station now faces the immediate loss of its annual $300,000 programming grant and critical music licensing rights previously available through NPR affiliation.

In an urgent letter to supporters, WCLK General Manager Wendy F. Williams outlined the station's dire situation and launched an emergency fundraising campaign with a goal of raising $300,000 by November 30, 2025.

"For more than 50 years, WCLK has been a trusted voice in the Atlanta community and beyond—offering music, stories, and conversations that educate, inspire, and connect us all," Williams wrote. "These changes present a serious challenge—but also an opportunity for our community to unite in support of something we all value deeply."

The funding crisis extends far beyond Atlanta, threatening the fabric of public broadcasting across America. Jazz stations, cultural programming, and educational content that serve underrepresented communities face particular vulnerability as federal support evaporates.

A Call to Action for Jazz Lovers Worldwide

WCLK's plight represents a critical moment for jazz preservation and public broadcasting. The station has served as a cultural beacon, supporting emerging artists, preserving jazz heritage, and providing a platform for diverse voices in the Atlanta metropolitan area and beyond.

Williams emphasized that community support has always been essential to the station's mission: "This legacy would not be possible without the generous and unwavering support of our donors and sponsors. These contributions have sustained our quality programming and provided critical support that keeps us on the air."

Global Jazz Community Rallies

The crisis at WCLK reflects broader challenges facing jazz radio and cultural programming worldwide. As commercial radio increasingly abandons jazz and other art forms, public stations like WCLK become even more crucial for preserving and promoting this uniquely American art form.

Jazz educators, musicians, and broadcasting professionals are being called upon to support not just WCLK, but public radio stations everywhere that serve as guardians of musical heritage and cultural diversity.

How to Support WCLK

Listeners, jazz enthusiasts, and supporters of public broadcasting can contribute to WCLK's survival through:

  • Direct donations to the station's emergency fund
  • Becoming monthly sustaining members
  • Corporate sponsorship opportunities
  • Spreading awareness through social media and community networks
  • Advocating for restored public broadcasting funding at federal and state levels

The station's fundraising campaign represents more than financial necessity—it's a test of whether communities will step forward to preserve institutions that serve the public good when government support disappears.

A Legacy Worth Preserving

As the longest-running jazz station in the Southeast, WCLK has been instrumental in developing Atlanta's reputation as a major cultural center. The station has provided career-launching opportunities for countless broadcasters, supported local musicians, and maintained connections between Atlanta's rich musical heritage and contemporary jazz scenes worldwide.

The current crisis demands immediate action from all who value jazz, public broadcasting, and community-supported media. The next few months will determine whether this vital cultural institution survives to serve future generations.

For more information about supporting WCLK or to make a donation, visit the station's website or contact the development office directly. The future of jazz radio in Atlanta—and the broader mission of public broadcasting—depends on community response to this critical moment.

The global jazz and broadcasting communities are encouraged to share this story and support WCLK's emergency fundraising efforts. Every contribution, regardless of size, helps preserve an irreplaceable cultural resource.
