How to Make an Online IRS Payment

Need to make a federal tax payment? The IRS offers a convenient and secure option through Direct Pay at IRS.gov - ideal for balance due payments, estimated taxes, or payment plan installments.

Pay directly from your bank account (Direct Pay):

• Recommended for one-time payments
• No login or account required
• Schedule payments up to one year in advance

Prefer to use a card or digital wallet? The IRS accepts debit cards, credit cards, and digital wallets, though convenience fees may apply. Please note these methods cannot be used for federal tax deposits or employer payroll taxes.

Penalties and interest may continue to accrue until your balance is paid in full, so timely payment is key.

How to Set Up Me.ID

To securely access your tax information and other IRS services online, you’ll need to create an ID.me account. This added layer of security helps protect your identity and personal information.

Account setup is a simple two-step process:

1. Create your account using your email, a strong password, and multifactor authentication
2. Verify your identity using your Social Security Number and a valid photo ID (only required once)

Once set up, you can easily sign in to IRS.gov and access your information anytime.
