Dear Neighbor,
Every year, September 11 makes us reflect on where we were, who we lost, and what we did. 24 years after those tragic attacks, we remember the 2,977 souls lost to extremist violence and the heroic acts of first responders in Northern Virginia, in Pennsylvania, and New York.
Congressman Walkinshaw
| |
On Tuesday, former Supervisor James Walkinshaw was elected to Congress. He was sworn in yesterday after vacating the Supervisor's office and is now Congressman Walkinshaw. You can read his goodbye letter.
The Braddock District Office wishes him the best of luck and will continue assisting with constituent issues and casework during this period of vacancy. The Board of Supervisors is holding a special meeting on Tuesday, September 16, to ask the Circuit Court to schedule a special election to fill the vacancy.
Residents of the Braddock District will continue to be represented by Chairman Jeff McKay. As always, you can reach the Braddock District office at braddock@fairfaxcounty.gov or (703) 425-9300.

Stuff The Bus this Weekend
| |
Fairfax County's Stuff the Bus initiative began in 2011 in response to a critical need to help restock the shelves of local food pantries after the holidays.
This collaborative program is a partnership between Fairfax County Government and local nonprofits. Now in its 14th year, Stuff the Bus continues to support food assistance efforts for families and households. Stuff the Bus has collected more than 250 tons of food to feed people experiencing food insecurity in Fairfax County since its inception.
The two closest sites for you to help stuff the bus this Saturday, September 13, from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. are:
- Huntsman Giant (7501 Huntsman Boulevard, Springfield)
- Walmart (11181 US-29, Fairfax)
There are six additional locations across Fairfax County where you can donate.

| | Braddock Road All-Abilities Park | |
On September 2, Supervisor Walkinshaw co-hosted a community information session with the Fairfax County Park Authority to provide an update on the All-Abilities Park in the Braddock District.
The All-Abilities Park site is located on Rec Center Road, just south of the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles on Braddock Road. When the Commonwealth of Virginia transferred the Northern Virginia Training Center site to a private developer, Erickson Senior Living, former Braddock District Supervisor John Cook worked with Erickson to arrange for the donation of land for a project dedicated to recreation for people of all abilities. There was a several-year effort to raise funds for an indoor facility, but the combination of financial impacts to organizations from Covid and rapidly rising construction expenses made it infeasible.
The Park Authority presentation noted that there is a need for more playgrounds in the area as well as unprogrammed open space that can be used for passive or active play and they presented a concept layout showing an all-abilities multi-generational park to serve all members of the community. Participants in the meeting expressed support for the concept and made valuable suggestions regarding the specifics of the design.
The Park Authority will update the community when funding becomes available. There will be a Park Planning Process at that time for residents to provide input.

Take a tour of historic Oak Hill, one of the oldest homes in Fairfax County, on Saturday, September 20, from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. This annual open house provides an opportunity to go back in time and rediscover our community roots. Oak Hill Manor is located at 4716 Wakefield Chapel Road in Annandale.
Built in 1790 by Richard Fitzhugh, a descendant of one of the first land-grant holders in Northern Virginia, the late Georgian-style house was renovated in the Colonial Revival style during the 1940s by renowned restoration architect Walter M. Macomber. In 2004, Seville Homes, the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust, the Fairfax County Park Authority, and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors agreed to a historic and conservation easement to preserve the property, including its 200-year-old boxwoods.
Please note that Oak Hill is a private residence and is only available for public access during this annual open house. Visitors are encouraged to carpool and utilize parking on the residential streets adjacent to Oak Hill.
The Oak Hill Open House is made possible in partnership with the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Fairfax County Park Foundation and Northern Virginia Conservation Trust. For more information about Oak Hill and this year's open house, visit the Oak Hill website.
| | Pet Adoption Spotlight: Cordelia! | |
Meet Cordelia, a gentle and quiet cat who is looking for a patient owner.
Located at the Lorton Campus (8875 Lorton Road, Lorton), Avita is energetic, obedient, and patient!
Cordelia came to FCAS as a stray, carrying the signs of a tough start-including an eye injury. Understandably, she's scared and unsure of the world around her.
Cordelia will need a patient and gentle adopter who can offer her a quiet, safe space to land. With time, love, and consistency, we believe she'll come out of her shell and begin to trust again.
She's not ready for the spotlight just yet-but if you've got a big heart and a soft place for a soul in need, Cordelia might just be your perfect match.
Visit the Fairfax County Animal Shelter's website for more information about Cordelia or to view other adoptable pets.
