9.18.2025

Dear Neighbor,

As you know, former Braddock District Supervisor James Walkinshaw was elected to Congress and sworn into office on Wednesday, September 10. Many residents are asking our office what happens next. With a vacancy in the Braddock District Supervisor's seat, the remaining Board members met this Tuesday for a special meeting to follow the required steps for requesting a special election.

The Board voted to request that the Fairfax Circuit Court issue a writ of election, which was just approved, for a special election date of December 9. This December 9 special election will be separate from the November election, meaning that Braddock District citizens will have two upcoming elections to participate in. Though separate, the early voting periods for the two elections will partially overlap.

The Board asked for the December 9 date for several reasons. First, it would not be possible to hold the Braddock District Supervisor's special election concurrently with the November 4 General Election, for which ballots are already printed and early voting begins tomorrow (Friday September 19 - see below for more information). Second, the Office of Elections staff and equipment will be occupied with the certification of the November election throughout much of the month. Third, the Virginia Code requires that the special election take place within 90 days of the incumbent's resignation and that the candidate filing deadline be at least 60 days before the special election. The December 9 date will allow for a candidate certification deadline of no later than October 10.

We expect that in the coming days, the Virginia Department of Elections and the Fairfax County Office of Elections will issue additional guidance. In the meantime, our staff will continue to serve you here at the Braddock District office.

Historic Oak Hill Day

Take a tour of historic Oak Hill, one of the oldest homes in Fairfax County, on Saturday, September 20, from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. This annual open house provides an opportunity to go back in time and rediscover community roots. Oak Hill Manor is located at 4716 Wakefield Chapel Road in Annandale.

Built in 1790 by Richard Fitzhugh, a descendant of one of the first land-grant holders in Northern Virginia, the late Georgian-style house was renovated in the Colonial Revival style during the 1940s by renowned restoration architect Walter M. Macomber. In 2004, Seville Homes, the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust, the Fairfax County Park Authority, and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors agreed to a historic and conservation easement to preserve the property, including its 200-year-old boxwoods.

Please note that Oak Hill is a private residence and is only available for public access during this annual open house. Visitors are encouraged to carpool and utilize parking on the residential streets adjacent to Oak Hill.

The Oak Hill Open House is made possible in partnership with the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Fairfax County Park Foundation and Northern Virginia Conservation Trust. For more information about Oak Hill and this year's open house, visit the Oak Hill website.

Take a Deep Dive into the 2025 Climate Action Conference

SummerConcertSeriesLogo18_main image

The Braddock District Office's 2025 Climate Action Conference is on Saturday, October 18, at Lake Braddock Secondary School (9200 Burke Lake Road, Burke) from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Plan to take a deep dive into this half-day conference on the impacts of climate change on water, from the oceans and Chesapeake Bay to the Potomac River and local watersheds.

Attend this year’s conference to discover:

  • The role Fairfax County plays in protecting local and regional watersheds and drinking water
  • The role you can play if you live in a flood risk area and qualify for flood mitigation assistance
  • The role everyone plays to reduce erosion and pollution runoff into local streams and ultimately, the Chesapeake Bay.

Opening remarks will be given by Congressman James Walkinshaw, Fairfax County Chairman Jeff McKay, and Fairfax County Mason District Supervisor Andres Jimenez. This year’s keynote speaker is Anna-Marie Laura, Director of Climate Policy with Ocean Conservancy.

During the morning networking session, be sure to visit the Clean Air Partners’ Backyard Bubble and enter their raffle for a chance to win electric lawn equipment! Then stop by the information booths of local park volunteer organizations, and groups like VA Clinicians for Climate Action, 350.org, and NatureForward to learn about ways to get involved to protect natural resources. Register today.

Volunteers Needed for

Advisory Committee

Fairfax County manages the Consolidated Community Funding Pool (CCFP), a competitive funding process that supports human services programs developed and run by nonprofits and community-based organizations. Through the CCFP, the County invests in strengthening the network of programs and services available to residents, serving as a catalyst for positive community impact. Theyare currently in the recruitment phase for the Selection Advisory Committee (SAC) for the FY27-28 funding cycle, and are looking for dedicated community members to join us.

The SAC plays a key role in the funding process by reviewing and evaluating submitted proposals and making recommendations on fund distribution to the community partners offering programs to benefit Fairfax County community members. This is a valuable opportunity to be a part of collaborative process that helps determine the allocation of resources that strengthen the County’s human services. Visit the Fairfax County Consolidated Community Funding Pool information page to learn more about the CCFP and the SAC volunteer opportunity.

County Pauses Unified Sanitation District Proposal for Further Study

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is pausing on a proposal to establish a Unified Sanitation District (USD) to allow for further study and community input.

The proposal aims to consolidate trash and recycling collection services under county management, to improve efficiency and reduce costs for residents. However, concerns were raised by community members, private waste haulers, and other stakeholders about the potential impact on service quality, competition, and local businesses.

In order to move forward with a USD, state law requires localities to give haulers a five-year waiting period between when they begin considering the change and actually implementing it. A hearing date was scheduled for October 14, but the proposal has now been indefinitely postponed.

The County will take additional time to develop potential options, analyze the financial and operational implications, and conduct a public forum with staff, licensed haulers, and homeowners’ associations.

Pet Adoption Spotlight: Scar!

Meet Scar, a big-hearted boy with an even bigger personality!

Located at the Lorton Campus (8875 Lorton Road, Lorton), Scar is eager to meet a new forever family.

When you meet him, you'll be greeted by a happy tail wag and an eagerness to connect. He's always ready for some love and attention!

He's a strong pup who can pull a bit on leash, but his sweet nature makes walks with him a fun adventure. Once he's out and about, he enjoys sniffing his surroundings and soaking in the world around him!

Scar is one smart cookie! He already knows sit, down, and paw, and he's always up for showing off his skills! He enjoys a good play session, especially with tennis balls (though he plays hard enough to break them!). Rope toys? Not so much his thing. He's all about that fetch life!

Socially, Scar does best with a slow introduction to other dogs. He's shown friendly, playful behavior once he's had time to settle and get comfortable, especially with other playful pups. He just needs a little patience and proper intros to make new doggie friends! If you have a resident pup at home, take them for a meet and greet to ensure compatibility!

Scar is looking for an active, loving home where he can thrive. If you're looking for a loyal companion who's playful, affectionate, and full of life, Scar might just be your guy!

Visit the Fairfax County Animal Shelter's website for more information about Scar or to view other adoptable pets.
