This Saturday, I'll be joining vendors and shoppers at the Burke Farmers Market to ring the opening bell announcing the first market of the season, one of my favorite traditions in our community. This market, along with the Wakefield Market that opens on Thursday, May 6, are beloved Braddock institutions that mark the arrival of spring and help bring our neighborhoods to life.
These markets are so much more than a place to pick up fresh produce. Yes, you'll find locally grown fruits and vegetables straight from the farm to your table, but you'll also get a genuine taste of the incredibly rich and diverse melting pot that is Northern Virginia. Our farmers markets have a way of reflecting who we are as a community, curious, worldly, entrepreneurial, and deeply passionate about good food. Where else can you find croissant bakers experimenting with bold Asian flavors like mango-papaya pastries, a scrappy family-run pickle start-up (yes, pickles have start-ups too!), artisanal chocolates, homemade pastas, Mediterranean and Anatolian specialties, and New Zealand meat pies, all within a few steps of each other on a Saturday morning?
I hope you'll come out and join me for the opening festivities. I'll be there this Saturday, April 18, at 8 a.m. sharp to ring the opening bell. Bring the family, bring a tote bag, and bring your appetite. We're hoping the sun shows up too!

Now back to business! Last Tuesday, the Board held several important meetings, and there's a lot to report. Be sure to check out the "From the Boardroom" feature below for full recaps of the Transportation Committee meeting and the Safety and Security Committee meeting, as well as highlights from my first Fairfax City/Fairfax County Interjurisdictional Meeting, a valuable opportunity to coordinate on the issues that cross our shared borders.
Finally, the FY2027 Advertised Budget is available for public review, and I want to make sure every resident has the opportunity to weigh in. If you have questions or want to learn more about what's proposed, I encourage you to participate in one of the public hearings being held April 14, 15 and 16 at the Fairfax County Government Center. Your voice matters in this process, and I hope to see strong community participation.

Overview and Analysis: Transportation Project Timelines
FCDOT Director Gregg Steverson gave a presentation on Overview and Analysis: Transportation Project Timelines, explaining the steps and processes that transportation projects go through once funding is allocated. Under normal circumstances, typical projects (i.e.: small pedestrian improvement project, sidewalk/walkway, intersection improvement) can take 3-6 years to complete from the time funding is allocated. Once funding is allocated, transportation projects go through 6 steps. We had a robust conversation about the need to review processes to be faster from conception to completion of transportation projects. $100 Million in Active Transportation Funding

FCDOT Director Gregg Steverson provided an update on the $100 million for active transportation and safety improvements that the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors committed funds to in 2021. As of Spring 2026, approximately $56.7 million of the $100 million has been allocated (view the list of approved projects here). In September 2024, $25.4 million was approved (Round 4), but the funds have not yet been allocated. FCDOT is currently assessing projects for Round 4 funding and recently wrapped up a public engagement survey. The presentation provided a funding process timeline, as well as project status for each round of funding.
Safety & Security Committee Meeting
Office of the Independent Police Auditor 2025 Annual Report
Richard Schott presented to the Board the 2025 Annual Report for the Office of the Independent Police Auditor. In 2025, there were 111 Active Case Reviews and 35 complaints closed. The Independent Police Auditor participated on FCPD Performance Review Board and on the One Fairfax Community Roundtable Foot Pursuit Equity Action Team. Staff conducted community outreach to increase awareness of the office. Additionally, they partnered with the Office of the Police Civilian Review Panel and developed a new online complaint form to improve efficiency. The Internal Affairs Bureau complaint status was reviewed to ensure timely and adequate responses to complaints. We appreciate the excellent work that Mr. Schott has done during his tenure with the County and wish him well in his next chapter.
Police Civilian Review Panel (PCRP) 2025 Annual Report
Panel Liaison Craig Miles, on behalf of Chair Dr. Byron Garner, presented the 2025 Annual Report for the Police Civilian Review Panel. The purpose of the Police Civilian Review Panel is to enhance police legitimacy and build trust between FCPD, BoS, and the public. The panel reviewed completed Internal Affairs Bureau investigations involving allegations of abuse of authority or serious misconduct. They determine whether investigations are accurate, complete, thorough, objective, and impartial. This provides citizens with an independent avenue for making complaints against the police. We discussed the importance of broad community engagement in order to hear directly from diverse cross section of people regarding policing in our community, especially as they are preparing to create a new strategic plan to guide their work. Fairfax City - Fairfax County Interjurisdictional Committee
On April 7 I also attended my first Fairfax City-County Interjurisdictional Committee meeting. This group was formed to strengthen our partnership with Fairfax City and to discuss how we can work together on our shared services.
The sole item on the Interjurisdictional Committee meeting agenda was a presentation and discussion about the Willard-Sherwood Health and Community Center. This upcoming project, which has been in the works for almost ten years, will bring a host of services such as public health, senior citizen activities, youth and toddler connection, indoor athletics, and more. The design is underway, the final vote on the City Council on whether or not to proceed on the project will take place on April 28, and construction is set to begin this summer. I’m thankful to our County staff who have been shepherding this project forward, and to our City partners for their support.

Community Development Week Proclamation
Thursday afternoon, I joined Chairman McKay to present a Proclamation for Community Development Week to the Fairfax County Government Department of Housing and Community Development team! Each year, Fairfax County receives federal Community Development Block Grant Program and HOME grant funding, which allows strategic and innovative partnerships with local nonprofit organizations and other private entities to offer affordable housing and other assistance.
With this proclamation, we acknowledge the significance and success of the CDBG and HOME Investment Partnerships Program in enhancing the quality of life in Fairfax County and beyond.

Cornerstones of Our Community Celebration
Thursday night, I was lucky to be able to honor the work of Cornerstones, whose services around housing, food and childcare are an amazing resource for our community. I also got to surprise Kerrie Wilson, who was retiring after 25 years of service, by announcing the childcare center in Fairfax Crest, a new affordable housing project here in the Braddock District, will be named after her!

OLLI Mason Teacher Appreciations and Scholarship Breakfast
I spoke to an extraordinary group on Friday morning at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) Mason Teacher Appreciations and Scholarship Breakfast which recognized all of the volunteer professors and teachers who make OLLI’s lifelong learning programs for seniors possible. The event also served to recognize the students who received scholarships thanks to the recommendations of the volunteer faculty. The OLLI program provides adults aging here in Fairfax County with connection, supporting intellectual curiosity and promoting brain health, and it uses the proceeds to fund scholarships. Definitely a win-win situation!

Annadale North Springfield Little League Opening Ceremony
I was lucky to spend Saturday morning with the Annandale North Springfield Little League as their special guest for their Opening Day Ceremony. It was so meaningful to watch former Little Leaguers, now high school students, help kick-off the season for the new generation of players.

Middleridge Pet Parade
What’s better than baseball? Baseball and dogs! After the Little League Opening Ceremonies, I joined the Middleridge community for their annual pet parade, a tradition in the neighborhood. And the dogs didn’t disappoint; every single one was a winner in their human’s eyes and mine.♥️🐾♥️

Korean Community Services Center Gala
It’s always a pleasure to join the Korean Community Services Center (KCSC) for their annual gala. Their work provides access to healthcare, housing, resources, language instruction career services and more to immigrant communities is critical. On Sunday we were recognizing their 52nd year. Congratulations KCSC and thank you!

Though Marley be 12 years old, that hasn't stopped him showing us his playful personality. He seems to enjoy fetching the most! At 68 pounds, this boy is a big hunk of love, though he appreciates a slower approach to warm up! Once he is comfortable, Marley has been described as being gentle and affectionate with the occasional excitable streak!
Marley met a dog for evaluation in our care, and the interaction was overall positive and playful, though Marley initially seemed nervous, because of this it is recommended that any potential doggy housemates be brought in to also get the chance to meet him, to ensure compatibility!

Walk & Win Challenge
Spring is a fantastic time to enjoy the great outdoors! Please join me on the Fairfax County Walk & Win Challenge! This is a countywide walking initiative held in April in celebration of Walking Month. The program encourages residents to get outside, be active, and explore their neighborhoods while supporting their District through friendly competition.
Throughout the month, participants earn entries to win weekly prizes by walking and submitting their activity online. Walks can be completed on one of Fairfax County’s designated walking loops. If a loop is not nearby, a participant can walk their own neighborhood route, making the challenge accessible to residents across the County— regardless of location, schedule, or walking experience.
The challenge is designed to be simple, inclusive, and flexible:
• Walk at your own pace
• Choose a route that works for you
• Participate as often as you like throughout April
District participation is tracked and shared via an online leaderboard, which creates excitement and encourages ongoing engagement. At the end of the month, the district with the highest participation earns Countywide recognition and bragging rights.
The Walk & Win Challenge supports Fairfax County’s broader goals of promoting active transportation, health and wellness, and sustainable travel choices, while providing a fun, low-barrier way for residents, employees, and families to participate together.

Neighborhood College Update
The Braddock District Neighborhood College began on March 12, 2026, and runs through April 30, 2026. This cohort of 21 participants has been an absolute pleasure. They have consistently shown up with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a genuine commitment to learning and community. Their support for one another, thoughtful participation, and willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue and ask questions has created a welcoming and inspiring environment.
It’s clear this is a group of dynamic leaders who are deeply invested not only in the program, but in strengthening connections across a vibrant Braddock District as a whole. We look forward to seeing how they will continue to make an impact in their community.

A two-day working symposium
Leaving and Belonging: Making an Impact on Immigration and Displacement through Arts, Culture, and Storytelling
George Mason University’s Institute for Immigration Research is hosting a symposium focused on immigration, displacement, and belonging, with a particular emphasis on how arts, culture, and storytelling can be effectively used to build community, shift public attitudes, and inform immigration-related policy in the United States. The goal of the symposium is to think together, share best practices, identify challenges and gaps, and develop strategies for impactful work at the intersection of immigration and arts.

Presentation with Daryl Davis
On April 18 at 2:00 p.m., Little River United Church of Christ will be hosting musician, lecturer, and author Daryl Davis. Davis is internationally known as a conflict navigator, specifically for influencing leaders of the Ku Klux Klan to leave the organization. He has successfully befriended and convinced some 200 KKK members to withdraw from that group. He will be sharing the five core values that guide his life and allow him to befriend those who have different points of view.

Apply for Season VII of the Capital One Hall Community Arts Partnership!
The Capital One Hall Community Arts Partnership allows Fairfax County-based nonprofit arts and culture groups, as well as arts-related programming by Fairfax County agencies and Fairfax County Public Schools, to apply for use of the Main Theater, Vault Theater, or classroom spaces for arts-related programming. Approved arts organizations and programs are submitted to Capital One Hall’s operator for integration into the season’s schedule and benefit from subsidized rental rates, production and front of house support, box office support, and Capital One Hall marketing and promotions support. All applicants must submit a new application each year. Previous applicants are not exempt.

News from ECHO
Do You Enjoy Working with Teens?
ECHO needs a few adults who enjoy the company of young people to volunteer with the Teen Program on one or two Wednesday evenings a month. A small group of community service-minded high schoolers volunteer on Wednesday evenings during the school year to help keep our donations organized. ECHO needs a few more adults to work with and supervise this great group of young people. The chair of the Teen Program will be happy to orient new volunteers.
In addition, there are a few volunteer openings on specific days for people who want to work directly with clients or those who want to work with donations. Want more info? Contact their Volunteer Coordinator through the ECHO website.
Shred and Share Event for Documents and Electronics
You can help ECHO and get your sensitive documents shredded, and your old phones, computers and computer peripherals securely recycled for free at the same time. On Saturday, April 18, from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm there will be a Shred and Share Event at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, 8336 Carrleigh Parkway, Springfield. Though it is not required, this is an opportunity to bring non-perishable food and personal hygiene products donations for ECHO’s Food Pantry.
ECHO Needs for Spring
The ECHO Housewares Department is grateful for the recent donations that have helped provide basic household items to our clients. Your generosity has allowed them to fulfill many immediate requests and better support families in need. Thank you!
ECHO’s most needed food and personal hygiene items at this time are dried beans, lentils, rice, canned fruit, Masa flour, boxed pasta, granulated sugar, toothbrushes, laundry detergent, shampoo and toilet paper.
ECHO is open to receive donations of household goods, clothing and non-perishable food from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, Monday through Friday, and from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, as well as one Saturday morning a month which varies, but is noted on their website. Receipts are cheerfully offered and volunteers are glad to help donors with boxes and bags. Look for the Donation Door sign on the west side of the building.
ECHO donations can also be received in the box at the Braddock Supervisor's office, 9002 Burke Lake Road, from 9-5 Mon-Fri and when the Library is open.
Mark Your Calendar!
Please mark your calendar for the Postal Carriers’ Food Drive scheduled for May 9, when Burke and Springfield letter carriers will pick up bags of food donations left at mailboxes as they carry out normal mail delivery, and give those donations to ECHO. This drive is very important to ECHO’s ability to meet food needs during the summer months when many regular donors are on vacation, and few food drives are held.

Celebrating Fairfax Founders
Last week the Fairfax County Department of Economic Initiatives proudly celebrated the third cohort of the Fairfax Founders Fund. Cohort #3 brings together five exceptional early-stage companies growing right here in Fairfax County.
Meet our newest Fairfax Founders:
The Fairfax Founders Fund (FFF) backs high-growth, early-stage companies with up to $50,000 in funding — plus the connections and mentorship to reach key milestones and scale. Since its launch as a pilot in 2023, the Fairfax Founders Fund has established itself as a cornerstone of Fairfax County's innovation ecosystem, directly fueling the growth of our most promising tech startups. Thirteen of the awardees have generated $23.5 million in additional revenue, contracts and capital, demonstrating a strong return on the County’s investment. Many have gone on to participate in the Accelerate Breakfast Series pitch competition. In addition, the program is a powerful marketing asset — demonstrating to entrepreneurs, investors, and site selectors nationwide that Fairfax County is where innovation is built, and backed.

Burke Farmer’s Market Opens April 18
Join Supervisor Sizemore Heizer and the Park Authority for the kickoff of the Farmer’s Market season in Burke! She’ll ring in the opening of the Farmer’s Market at the Burke VRE Station (5671 Roberts Parkway, Burke, 22015) on Saturday, April 18 at 8:00 a.m.
There will be a wide selection of fresh, organic vegetables and fruit, baked goods, dairy products, beverages and prepared meals and plants to choose from. Products and produce are provided by local farmers and food producers.
Be sure to bring your own reusable shopping bag and maybe leave some room in your basket for your own free tree from the Fairfax County Tree Commission! (More information is in the article below)

Park Authority to Hold May 2nd Public Meeting on Audrey Moore Rec Center Renovation
The Fairfax County Park Authority invites the community to a special informational meeting about the highly anticipated renovation of Audrey Moore Rec Center. Plan to attend on Saturday, May 2 at 2 p.m. in the Wakefield Forest Elementary Cafeteria, 4011 Iva Lane in Fairfax.
The meeting will provide residents the opportunity to meet the project and Rec Center teams, and include details about:
- Overall renovation concept
- Construction and reopening timeline
- Overview of amenities and programmatic areas and
- Pottery class considerations
Community members who would like an interpreter to participate in the public meeting may request interpretation services by emailing parkmail@fairfaxcounty.gov as soon as possible.
There will be a 30-day comment period on the proposed renovation plans following the public meeting on May 2. Comments will be accepted online via the Audrey Moore Rec Center Renovation webpage and must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Friday, June 5.
Construction is expected to begin in late spring 2028, with an estimated completion in winter 2030.
Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to learn more about the future of the Audrey Moore Rec Center and how it will continue to serve as a vital resource for Fairfax County residents for years to come.

Grow a Greener Fairfax…for Free!
The Fairfax County Tree Commission is hosting a free tree seedling giveaway at the opening of the Burke Farmer’s Market on Saturday, April 18th. The bare-root seedlings are small and easy to plant and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
A variety of trees will be available: Black Gum, Red Oak, Willow Oak, Sweetbay Magnolia, and Eastern Redbud.
Plant a much-needed tree to:
- Replace a tree that recently fell
- Celebrate a birth or memorialize a loss
- Create a habitat for local and migratory birds
- Protect soil from erosion and drought
- Create a privacy screen and wind buffer
- Increase the property value of your home

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd, but the truth is that it’s always Earth Day. - Refuse plastic when possible, especially single-use plastic bags and bottles. Bring your own reusable bags and water bottles/coffee mugs–even straws and cutlery--everywhere you go. Keep them in your vehicle and remember them every time you get out of the car.
- Reuse what you can, when you can. Start looking at your waste items as resources instead. Could you reuse that plastic bag, wrap or glass jar?
- Rethink the resources you use in your life. Where could you use less, reuse, repurpose, repair, share, and swap?
- Support your local farmers’ markets as they reopen this month (and bring your reusable totes and produce bags of course).
- Choose native and non-invasive plants for your landscape. Native plants support wildlife, from insects to birds to mammals.
- Go outside to enjoy the beauty of our planet and appreciate the connections we share with natural systems around us. We depend on Earth for our existence - let’s celebrate it!

There are thousands of individuals and many organizations that volunteer each year in local parks to support the many programs and initiatives of the Fairfax County Park Authority. In fact, it would be difficult, if not impossible, for the park system to operate without volunteers.
The Annual Elly Doyle Park Services Awards, established in 1988, recognize those who’ve made outstanding contributions to the Fairfax County Park Authority for the advancement of recreational opportunities and protection of natural, cultural or historic resources over the last year.
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2026 Awards until Friday, May 22, 2026. Anyone may submit a nomination, and one individual may be nominated for multiple awards. Awards will be given in the following categories:
- Elly Doyle Park Service Award & Youth/Student Award
- The Harold L. Strickland Partnership and Collaboration Award
- The Mayo Stuntz Cultural Stewardship Award
- The Sally Ormsby Environmental Stewardship Award
- The Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award

Benefit from Improvements to the Charge Up Fairfax Program
The Charge Up Fairfax program is now accepting applications on a rolling basis from a larger population of interested residents!
The program is designed to help common-interest communities and other organizations install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, improving local air quality and driving us toward a more sustainable future.
Since its roll-out, the program has introduced three key changes:
- Applications are now being accepted continuously, making it easier than ever to participate.
- Reimbursement grant amounts have been increased, offering greater financial support for those looking to install EV charging stations.
- Eligibility has expanded beyond homeowner and condo owner associations to include places of worship and other non-profit organizations, recognizing their critical role in providing EV charging access to staff and guests while attending services or events.

Update on Housing Proposal at Olley Lane and Braddock Road
near Church of the Good Shepherd
On April 11, 2023, the Board of Supervisors authorized a potential Comprehensive Plan Amendment for the Church of the Good Shepherd, located at 9350 Braddock Road in Burke, to consider developing a portion of the Church’s property along Olley Lane with single-family houses at a higher density than is currently planned and zoned.
This land is currently zoned R-1, which allows residential development at one house per acre. Since that time, the proposed 3.14-acre development site has been subdivided from the Church’s property, and a contract purchaser began speaking with community members about a revised development concept.
The Plan Amendment would allow for an increase to 2-3 dwellings per acre. At the time of authorization, the Board deferred active work on the amendment, citing the need for additional public outreach and consideration of changes to the proposal. The developer continued to speak with the community, has held neighborhood meetings, and has shared a revised development concept. Given this progress, on August 26, 2025, former Supervisor Walkinshaw asked the Board to reprioritize the formal Plan amendment process to an active Tier II status. The first community meeting was held on March 9, 2026 and the next virtual community meeting is planned for May 4th. Mark your calendars! More details will be coming soon!

April 23 & 24: Project Update for ALUs Zoning Ordinance Amendment
Join County staff virtually on Thursday, April 23 at 7 p.m. or Friday, April 24 at noon for an update on the Accessory Living Units (ALU) zoning ordinance amendment, which considers updates to zoning regulations for ALUs, like basement apartments or in-law suites.
Each meeting will include a summary of the recent community survey, a discussion of setbacks, an update on state legislation and next steps for the project.
County residents are encouraged to join to learn more, share thoughts and ask questions.

Member Sought for the Board of Zoning Appeals
There is an upcoming opening for the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals. Interested candidates must apply by Friday, May 1 to the Fairfax Circuit Court, which appoints the board’s seven members. This position will complete a term through April 18, 2029. Applicants must be residents of Fairfax County.
The Board of Zoning Appeals duties include:
• Hearing and deciding appeals of administrative decisions made pursuant to the Zoning Ordinance.
• Hearing and deciding applications for special permits and variances as authorized by the Zoning Ordinance.
• Hearing and deciding applications for interpretation of the Zoning Map where there is uncertainty as to the location of a zoning district boundary.

Disability Safety and Practice Interaction Day
The Arc of NOVA is excited to invite you to attend and share information about an upcoming community event hosted by Arc and many other partners: First Responder Interaction Day on Saturday, April 25th, 10 AM-2 PM at the Fairfax Fire Training Academy on West Ox Rd.
This free event is designed to help individuals with disabilities, their families, and community members learn how to safely and confidently interact with first responders in emergency situations. Participants will have the opportunity to meet local first responders, learn about emergency and crisis resources, and practice real-life scenarios in a supportive environment.

Meet the VRE Management
Virginia Railway Express CEO Katie Choe and other VRE staff are meeting with riders on Wednesday afternoon as part of Meet the Management. They are sharing VRE goodies and refreshments while speaking to riders about their VRE experience and answering questions ranging from performance, service plans, ticketing, and more. Meet the Management is an annual series of events held each spring across VRE stations as a way to meet face-to-face with riders and express our appreciation for the community's continued support. NOVA Loop Trail
The NOVA Loop Trail is a roughly 70-mile route made up of segments from eight trails across Northern Virginia.
This Loop passes through Providence, Hunter Mill, Sully, Springfield, and Mount Vernon districts in Fairfax County, the City of Falls Church, the Town of Vienna, the City of Alexandria, and Arlington County, as well as Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority and National Park Service lands.
