Last Friday, I took advantage of the gorgeous spring evening to stroll around my neighborhood. I didn’t get far though as I found a group of neighbors and joined them, while their children climbed trees, drew chalk flowers, and played stomp rockets...not a screen in sight! I feel like I came out of hibernation after a long winter! Spring is in full swing, with a few days that feel like summer thrown in for good measure, and what better time to celebrate the planet we call home?
This Wednesday, April 22 is Earth Day, and honestly, nature is doing its best to remind us why it's worth celebrating. The trees are blooming, flowers are pushing their way up through the soil, and the weather (temperamental as it is!) has been giving us some truly beautiful days to get outside, get some Vitamin D, and breathe it all in.

This Earth Day, millions of people around the world will be pausing to do something positive for our planet, and I hope you'll join them. While the big policy changes we need happen at a national level, there's so much we can do right here in our own neighborhood to make a difference.
A simple way to start is just to slow down (which I am admittedly not good at!), take a walk in a local park, and be curious. Are there unusual birds? More robins, blue jays, or hawks than usual? What plants and animals have been crossing your path? Just taking time to observe and appreciate the natural world around us isn't a luxury, it's one of the most meaningful things we can do, both for the Earth and for our own well-being. According to the National Park Service, a 10–20 minute daily walk in nature lowers stress, blood pressure, and boosts mood. Adding curiosity by actively noticing your surrounding further reduces mental fatigue, enhances well-being, and supports immune health. Learn more here.
If you're feeling inspired to do a little more, consider planting a native plant or two, volunteering to remove invasive species, or helping clean up litter along a local park trail or stream. Consider joining a volunteer group through the Fairfax County Park Authority’s Invasives Management Area (IMA) volunteer program. The IMA website provides a calendar full of opportunities to mitigate invasive plant species in our parks.
Even if you’re not an outdoorsy type, remember the health of our lands and creeks flows directly into the quality of our waterways, and even the water we drink. Small everyday choices matter: bringing reusable bags to the store, picking up a wrapper on a trail, or taking the bus instead of driving all add up.
How ever you choose to mark the occasion, I hope you'll find a moment this week, or this whole month, to celebrate the Earth in your own way.
Even better, come celebrate together! Fairfax County's Earth Day celebration is this Saturday, April 25 at Lake Fairfax Park in Reston. Stop by to explore the vendor booths, connect with neighbors, grab some food, and enjoy live music from local bands. County staff and community organizations will be on hand with great information about caring for our environment. It's going to be a wonderful day of learning, community, and fun. I'd love to see you there!
Back in the Boardroom, last week brought three full days of public hearings on the Advertised Fiscal Year 2027 budget, and it was genuinely moving to witness. Resident after resident came before the Board to share their thoughts, concerns, and support for the programs that matter most to them. That kind of passion and civic engagement is exactly what makes Fairfax County such a special place to live. It's a reminder that our community's strength comes from you, and I'm grateful for every voice that showed up.

Presentations – High School Champions
The April 14 Board of Supervisors meeting started off with one of my favorite things to do, which is celebrating our amazing high school athletes and academics!
Among the teams recognized, I was happy to present a proclamation to the Robinson Secondary School Girls Indoor Track & Field team, which won their first Class VI Championship! It was a great all-around performance from the Robinson team, especially Petra Gruendel with a first-place finish and 8 points in the 4x800-meter relay, totaling 50 points in those distance events alone, and proving especially decisive, as well as:
- Olivia Jones in the 55-meter dash and 300-meter dash
- Joy Okonta in the 300-meter dash
- Karina and Alexandra Bird in the 1600-meter run and the 3200-meter run
- Isabella Willard in the 1600-meter run
- Claire Andresen in the 3200-meter run
Congratulations again to the team, Coach Luke Choate, and all the families!

Board Matter on Ridge Top Road Property
Also at the Board meeting, I introduced a measure to allow for a phased approach to the redevelopment study of a property in the Fairfax Center Suburban Center, an area designated for redevelopment in the County. The owner of the commercial property at 4035 Ridge Top Road is ready to move forward with a review of a proposal for residential townhomes at this location. Other property owners in the Fairfax Center Suburban area need additional time to study their options, so County staff proposed a phased strategy for the process. This will facilitate a review of the Ridge Top proposal while establishing the groundwork for future phases as other proposals are developed for more properties in the Fairfax Center Suburban Center redevelopment area.
In order to implement this phased approach, I moved that the Board of Supervisors amend the County Comprehensive Plan Amendment Work Program language. Before any potential development takes place, the County staff will have to consider the feasibility of the proposal for Ridge Top Road, and schedule public meetings to seek feedback from the community. I will share more information about the proposal for this property in our newsletter as it goes through the review process.
Connector Bus Service Changes
The Board also approved changes to Fairfax Connector Bus service to be enacted this summer. Some of these routes affect stops in the Braddock District, so if you’re a Connector rider I encourage you to review.
Budget Public Hearings
The biggest item of the day, as I mentioned above, was the Budget Public Hearings, which started Tuesday afternoon and ended on Thursday evening. Speakers included representatives of advocacy groups as well as individual community members to testify on issues related to human services, the environment, taxes, housing, and more. I admire the courage and commitment to community that was evident in every person who spoke. We even had a musical medley performance from supporters of ArtsFairfax!

What a way to kick off a Saturday morning! I had the honor of ringing the opening bell at the first Burke Centre Farmers Market of 2025 alongside Park Authority Director Jai Cole and the hundreds of shoppers who showed up bright and early at 8 a.m.! And trust me, there is plenty to shop for. With 47 vendors this season, the Burke Centre Farmers Market is one the largest farmers market in all of Fairfax County! From unique pastries to fresh local produce, there's something for everyone including live music and a special give-away for the opening day, free tree seedlings from the Tree Commission. Nothing says "welcome to the season" like going home with fresh groceries AND a tree to plant in your yard!

| | Long Branch Stream Valley Park Cleanup | | This past Saturday, I joined the Friends of Long Branch Stream Valley for their Park Cleanup Day and Scavenger Hunt! We gathered at the Canterbury Woods Swim and Tennis Club to learn about the environmental challenges facing the park, then headed out to remove trash and invasive species from the stream valley. Afterward, we regrouped to share our findings, and everyone went home with a prize! | | GMU Holi - South Asian Organizations | | Colors, culture, and community, what a celebration! 🎨🌸 I had an incredible time joining George Mason University's Collective Organizations of South Asia (COSA) for their Holi festivities this weekend! As an umbrella group connecting South Asian organizations across Mason's campus, COSA brings students together through dialogue, collaboration, and a deep pride in South Asian heritage, and this event showed exactly why that work matters. It was so inspiring to speak with passionate young people working to strengthen South Asian representation both on campus and across the Braddock District. Ten years of nourishing our kids - and counting! I had the honor of celebrating a decade-long partnership between Braddock Elementary School and the SEVA Truck Foundation, a collaboration that has brought healthy, hot vegetarian meals to our students and their families. Because when children aren't worried about hunger, they can focus on what matters most: being kids and thriving in the classroom.
Marking ten years together is a milestone worth celebrating, and this warm community gathering was a reminder of just how much we can accomplish when we show up for one another. Here's to many more years of the SEVA Truck Foundation and Braddock ES growing stronger together! 🙌

Adopt Mario and Luigi!
Mario is a sweet older guy, just looking for a comfortable lap to spend his golden years in. He's best buds with his brother Luigi, and relies on him for comfort and confidence. Mario and Luigi lived with a young person in their previous home, and while they were both perfect gentlemen, it was all just a little stressful and overwhelming for them. They would prefer a quiet home, where they can take their time settling in at a slower pace. Mario has also received a full dental cleaning, courtesy of the Friends of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, to help him feel his best for his new family. Come on in and take these two sweet old men home today!
These two are a bonded pair who can't imagine life without each other, so they'll need to be adopted together. To help make that happen, only one adoption fee applies!

Luigi is also a sweet older guy, with a soft gray coat and striking green eyes. He's quick to ask for pets, and will give you the cutest little paw tap when he wants your attention! He's best buds with his brother Mario, and they would love to be adopted to a home together! They lived with a young person in their previous home, and while they were always very polite and never gave a swat, the energy was just a little bit much for them. They would prefer a home with quiet older children, or maybe just adults, in order to feel comfortable and safe. Luigi and Mario are the perfect pair for a chill summer evening on the veranda, so come on in and take them home today!

OLLI Ideas Festival – Learning for Life
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at George Mason University (OLLI Mason) is hosting its first-ever OLLI Ideas Festival on May 8-9, 2026, to introduce adults age 50+ to its diverse educational, social, and cultural programs.
In conjunction with Older Americans Month, attendees will enjoy free classes and special events that provide a sampling of all that OLLI Mason has to offer, including art, music, history, finance, humanities, poetry, yoga and tai chi, along with general fun and games. Over the course of 2 days, participants can engage in up to 19 educational classes, demonstrations, activities and discussions on OLLI Mason’s Fairfax Tallwood campus. The Fairfax County Department of Economic Initiatives maintains a monthly dashboard reviewing business and economic data. The Business and Economic Data Dashboard brings together regularly updated data—refreshed at least monthly—to provide a real-time snapshot of our local and regional economy.
The County economy remains relatively resilient, with unemployment below the national average and with job postings up. Our area continues to be impacted by Federal workforce reductions, as indicated by federal unemployment claims. While inflation is up, sales tax receipts indicate continued economic activity.

Business Leaders Survey
The Q1 NVC/Pinkston Northern Virginia Business Leader Survey captured responses from 210 business leaders (35% located in Fairfax County or Fairfax City):
- 32% of business leaders believe the NOVA economy will decline over the next 6 months, while 34% believe that it will remain the same, and 34% believe that it will grow.
- 67% of business leaders are very or somewhat optimistic about their own company performance and near future, compared to 21% who are neutral, and 12% are pessimistic.
- The top reported policy priorities for the local county or city government included reducing taxes (43%), affordable housing (34%), and transportation improvements (20%).

Park Authority to Hold May 2nd Public Meeting on Audrey Moore Rec Center Renovation
The Fairfax County Park Authority invites the community to a special informational meeting about the highly anticipated renovation of Audrey Moore Rec Center. Plan to attend on Saturday, May 2 at 2 p.m. in the Wakefield Forest Elementary Cafeteria, 4011 Iva Lane in Fairfax.
The meeting will provide residents the opportunity to meet the project and Rec Center teams, and include details about:
- Overall renovation concept
- Construction and reopening timeline
- Overview of amenities and programmatic areas and
- Pottery class considerations
Community members who would like an interpreter to participate in the public meeting may request interpretation services by emailing parkmail@fairfaxcounty.gov as soon as possible.
There will be a 30-day comment period on the proposed renovation plans following the public meeting on May 2. Comments will be accepted online via the Audrey Moore Rec Center Renovation webpage and must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Friday, June 5.
Construction is expected to begin in late spring 2028, with an estimated completion in winter 2030.

Kings Park West Earth Day Spring Clean‑Up
The Kings Park West Parks & Lake Committee invites you to join them for an Earth Day Spring Clean‑Up event on Sunday, April 26th from 10:30 AM–12:30 PM at the Lakeside Park covered pavilion (5216 Pommery Ct., Fairfax).
This year’s event features both land and water cleanup teams. Volunteers can help remove litter from the park’s trails, fields, and gathering areas, or head out on the lake by kayak, paddleboard, or canoe to collect debris that threatens local wildlife. Life jackets and whistles are required for all on‑water participants.
Spend two hours giving back to the green spaces you love, and help keep our community beautiful. Families, friends, and neighbors of all ages are welcome.

There are thousands of individuals and many organizations that volunteer each year in local parks to support the many programs and initiatives of the Fairfax County Park Authority. In fact, it would be difficult, if not impossible, for the park system to operate without volunteers.
The Annual Elly Doyle Park Services Awards, established in 1988, recognize those who’ve made outstanding contributions to the Fairfax County Park Authority for the advancement of recreational opportunities and protection of natural, cultural or historic resources over the last year.
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2026 Awards until Friday, May 22, 2026. Anyone may submit a nomination, and one individual may be nominated for multiple awards. Awards will be given in the following categories:
- Elly Doyle Park Service Award & Youth/Student Award
- The Harold L. Strickland Partnership and Collaboration Award

Disability Safety and Practice Interaction Day

Crosswalk Improvements at Burke Lake Road and Signal Hill Drive
Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has started construction for intersection improvements at Burke Lake Road and Signal Hill Drive. The project will include pedestrian safety improvements such as replacing ADA pedestrian ramps, installing a median refuge, installing pedestrian warning signs, and pavement striping.

City of Fairfax - Main Street Intersection Improvement Study
The City of Fairfax is asking residents to share their experience at Main St/Lyndhurst Dr/Trapp Rd to help inform safety improvements.
An Open House is being held on April 22 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Fairfax City Hall Atrium at 10455 Armstrong Street.
