"Looking towards the Fall"
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer! I’m finally getting together with other people outside, which has been a very welcomed change of pace. While RI C-AIM institutions release their re-opening plans for the Fall, it still means most students are limited in their ability to get into the lab.

I’m trying to keep motivated and maintain productivity while continuing to work from my dining room table for the fifth month in a row. Some RI C-AIM lab groups are getting a breath of fresh air with SURF students beginning their research this month (welcome!) We also have new postdocs joining C-AIM this summer (check out the highlight!), and the 2020 Vis-a-Thon is continuing to get underway with some projects already completed.

This Thursday and Friday is also the RI C-AIM Career Development Summer Intensive, so I hope you’ll join me in participating! As always, feel free to reach out to me if you need someone to bounce ideas off in your projects, or life!

Register for RI C-AIM Career Development Summer Intensive
When: Thursday & Friday, July 16-17, 2020

Where: Online

Who: Graduate students, post doctoral scholars, and senior-level undergraduates from any of the eight RI C-AIM member institutions who plan to pursue a graduate degrees in any of the STEM fields.

What: Graduate students and post-doctoral scholars must obtain the science communication and professional development skills to succeed in their careers, especially as they prepare to enter an even more competitive workforce. URI's Metcalf Institute will hold a two-day professional development workshop that will provide workforce development skills to participants as part of the RI C-AIM Career Development Program.

Meet Dr. Sunshine Menezes
As executive director of URI's Metcalf Institute, Dr. Menezes has been dedicated to expanding accurate environmental news coverage through innovative training and resources for journalists, researchers, and other science communicators to engage more people in conversations about science and the environment. She will speak at RI C-AIM's monthly Get-Together on Thursday, August 13 @ 4 p.m.

2020 Vis-a-Thon : "I wanted to bring these images together for the idea that the trawl let's you 'see' what's really in the water"

RI C-AIM grad student Maggie Heinichen on her 2020 Vis-a-Thon project (Click video to the left!) depicting trawl catches on Narragansett Bay 
Contribute to C-AIM Data Directory: The objective of the data directory is to better connect participants within C-AIM to the current data that can be leveraged to benefit their own research as we all work to characterize the ecosystem of Narragansett Bay. These data don't have to necessarily be readily available, more so the directory is a place where participants can see the different kinds of data that are being collected and who is collecting it.

Data can range from social science interviews to model output data of Narragansett Bay. Contribute your data information here!
Dr. Kris Gomes, RI C-AIM's newest postdoctoral fellow, will be working with URI's Dr. Andrew Davies to deploy sensor buoys as part of our integrated Bay Observatory, as well as maintain and analyze data collected about the bay's changing ecology.

Virtual Get-Togethers
