A Cookout That Had Hope on the Menu

Scenes from the Water Eagles dragon boat team's kickoff at Captain Ku Htoo’s home! As a beloved young leader and advocate for Karen refugee youth, his dedication and wisdom never fail to leave us in awe. We wanted to share a particularly poignant reflection he recently shared that deeply touched us:

“Who is there to pave the way for us? I really like the question, and it truly hits home.

Our parents sacrificed everything to bring us to America in search of a better future. They left behind their families, their language, their culture, and everything they knew so that we could have opportunities they never had. We owe so much to them, and because of those sacrifices, many of us grow up feeling a deep responsibility to make their struggles worthwhile. We work hard, chase success, and do everything we can to support them as they grow older and face new challenges.

But somewhere along the way, I can’t help but ask: Who is there for us? Who helps carry our burdens? Who helps pave the way for the next generation?

Many children of immigrants live between two worlds. We navigate expectations from our families while trying to find our place in a society that doesn’t always understand us—or even welcome us. We face language barriers, cultural barriers, financial obstacles, and the constant pressure to succeed because failure doesn’t just feel personal; it feels like we’re letting down the sacrifices our parents made.

We carry responsibilities that many people never see. We become translators, advocates, role models, and providers long before we’re ready. We often suppress our own struggles because we don’t want to add to our parents’ burdens. Mental health is rarely talked about, yet so many of us quietly battle anxiety, self-doubt, loneliness, and the weight of expectations while trying to build a future from limited resources.

Despite all of that, we keep going. We learn. We adapt. We overcome. We strive to become people our parents can be proud of, even when the journey feels lonely.

That’s why I believe so deeply in the vision and mission that WAVES is building. It fills a gap that has existed for far too long. Every generation deserves someone who can guide them, mentor them, and remind them that they don’t have to navigate this path alone. Sometimes all it takes is one person to say, ‘I’ve walked this road before—let me help you find your way.’

What you’re doing is bigger than a program or an organization. It’s creating a community where people feel seen, understood, and supported. It’s giving hope to those who often feel like they have to figure everything out on their own.

You will always have my support because I genuinely believe this work matters. It’s about more than helping individuals succeed—it’s about paving the way for future generations so they can carry less of the burden and more of the hope.”

At UCA WAVES, we share that same vision: creating a community where people feel seen, understood, and supported.

We certainly saw hope at this incredible cookout. Our deepest thanks to Ku Htoo for not only welcoming us into his home, but also allowing us a glimpse into his heart and mind. Let’s go make some WAVES, Water Eagles!

WAVES Executive Director Presents at Duke Symposium

A beautiful recording we shared this past month of WAVES Founding Executive Director Lily Chen's presentation, in which she shared preliminary findings from our study, "Identifying AAPI Health Priorities in North Carolina," at the Duke University Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) Symposium.

Too often, AAPI communities are overlooked in the wider field of health research, leaving critical questions about mental health, healthcare access, and care needs unanswered. We believe that statistics, much like stories, can give a powerful voice to these neglected communities. Guided by the principle of "Nothing About Us Without Us," WAVES works to generate data that reflects the experiences, challenges, and strengths of AAPI communities. As Lily put it in her own words, "I was nervous, but our stories need to be told."

Our deepest thanks to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation of North Carolina for recognizing the importance of this work and investing in AAPI research. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone at the Karen Community Farm and to our incredible team, whose participation and dedication made this project possible! Watch the recording by clicking below.

Pride Pathways: A New Resource from AFSP

We wanted to pass along this amazing resource from our friends at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). They recently announced their new education program, Pride Pathways: Suicide Prevention for LGBTQ+ Communities and Allies!

Pride Pathways is a 90-minute presentation designed to deepen understanding of the impact of suicide on the LGBTQ+ community. Whether you're a part of the queer community or a staunch ally, if you're interested in fostering supportive, inclusive, and affirming environments that promote LGBTQ+ mental health, this tool is for you. You'll learn to:

  • Describe how suicide affects the LGBTQ+ community
  • Recognize suicide risk factors, protective factors, and warning signs
  • Identify how to create protective environments for LGBTQ+ communities at home, school, and work
  • Start a conversation with someone you’re concerned about
  • Identify LGBTQ+ suicide prevention resources

We remain inspired by the incredible work being done at AFSP. Learn more about the initiative by clicking the button below!

WAVES Represents at UNCG Community Research Symposium

This June, our Executive Director, Lily Chen, participated in the 2026 UNC Greensboro (UNCG) Community Research Symposium Round Table Role Play discussion on community leadership, equity, and collaboration!

In the discussion, Lily represented the Executive Director of the fictional Highland Folk Community-Based Organization (CBO) in the city of Green Acres. The scenario centered on a refugee-led organization that received a transformational $25 million philanthropic gift, inviting participants to consider how community organizations, institutions, and funders can collaborate to ensure resources are used equitably and effectively.

Alongside community leaders, researchers, and advocates from across North Carolina, Lily engaged in discussions about what happens when communities come to the table as equal partners and how organizations can collaborate across sectors to create more equitable opportunities for immigrant and refugee communities.

We are deeply grateful to UNCG and all participating organizations for fostering meaningful dialogue and inspiring new ideas for community-driven change. It’s amazing what can happen when we come together—let’s carry this energy throughout the summer!

WAVES Mentioned in DUKE

CTSI Article

The exciting news from the Duke CTSI Symposium continues! WAVES was delighted to be mentioned in an article published by the University highlighting the event, where findings from our “Identifying North Carolina AAPI Health Priorities” study were showcased.

This work would not have been possible without the trust and partnership of community members and organizations across North Carolina. We extend our sincere thanks to Karen refugee community leader Htoo Saw Yaw, the Karen Community Advisory Committee, and our 12 AAPI community partners for their collaboration throughout this project.

Collecting a single survey within the refugee community could take 2–2.5 hours due to challenges including distrust of research, language barriers, and low health literacy. Despite these significant barriers, 114 Karen community members completed surveys that were included in the final data analysis, providing invaluable insights into community health priorities. We are also deeply grateful to Dr. Paohwa Lin, Ya-Ke (Grace) Wu, Wenxin Bian, Ling Jin, and Natalie Lor for their outstanding contributions to the survey component of this study. Finally, thank you to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation of North Carolina for funding and supporting this important work to better understand and address the health needs of North Carolina’s AAPI communities.

This gathering was nothing short of an honor to attend. Hear more about it by reading the article linked below!

Reflecting on June: Honoring Pride, PTSD Awareness, and Men's Mental Health

June was a powerful reminder of the layered struggles—and strength—within our communities. As we recognized Pride Month, PTSD Awareness Month, and Men’s Mental Health Month, WAVES highlighted often-overlooked narratives across the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) experience.

From the dual marginalization faced by queer AAPI individuals to the deep, intergenerational trauma in refugee communities, and the silence surrounding men’s mental health—these stories call us to listen more closely and act with intention. Data shows alarming disparities: LGBTQ+ AAPI youth facing disproportionately high rates of depression, Southeast Asian refugees carrying some of the highest PTSD burdens globally, and AAPI men silently navigating mental health challenges under the weight of stigma and expectations.

But amid these challenges, we’ve also seen resilience through art, advocacy, education, and community-led care. At WAVES, we remain committed to making space for these truths, supporting culturally grounded healing, and uplifting every voice brave enough to speak. Healing is complex, but together, we can break the silence.

(Nothing About Us Without Us)
