Consider This
The New Testament has two words for “good.” Knowing the difference between them can help us build a better society.

"In Greek, there are two words for good. Agathos defines the quality of something that is good in character, beneficial in effect, or useful in action. Edible bread and soup, for example, have goodness that’s precious to a hungry body. Kalos describes something that’s not only good in quality but also has an attractive or captivating character ... Kalos is the word reserved for something or someone that expresses goodness in a winsome or beautiful way ...

'Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good [kalos] works, and glorify your Father in heaven,' says Jesus. He isn’t just preaching about doing good with one’s life; Jesus is admonishing people to work out their impact on others in delightful and winsome ways ... It’s caring for people in lovely and compelling ways ...

Doing good things for others is nothing short of wonderful. But striving to do those same things in lovely or winsome ways is what keeps the world in step with the rhythm with God."

The Episcopal Church
"Eternal God, hear our prayer for the peoples of Afghanistan. There is a profound humanitarian crisis. Countless people, mostly women and children, are now fleeing and vulnerable. The lives of many are now endangered. The hopes of many are forgone. Send your Spirit, Lord, to rally the resolve of the nations of the earth to find pathways to save human lives, protect human rights, and to resolve the hardships of those seeking refuge, asylum, and safety. Hear our prayer for the peoples of Afghanistan. This we pray as followers of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen."

"The deteriorating situation in Afghanistan is a humanitarian crisis that has left upwards of 550,000 Afghans internally displaced in the country since the beginning of the year, in addition to 2.9 million Afghans already internally displaced at the end of 2020. Episcopal Migration Ministries, the refugee resettlement and migration ministry of The Episcopal Church, is currently working in partnership with the U.S. government to assist Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders with resettlement and direct services through a network of 12 affiliates across the U.S."

Haiti Relief

On Saturday, August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the southwest portion of Haiti. This devastating earthquake was followed by Tropical Storm Grace on Monday night and much of Tuesday. More than 1 million people, including more than half a million children, have been impacted by the back-to-back disasters, and the death toll is close to 2000.

Episcopal Relief & Development and its partners are responding immediately with direct assistance to vulnerable households in the region, as partners plan long-term recovery. Your generous gift can provide assistance to help people in the wake of these disasters. To assist in these efforts, visit Haiti Relief

Auro Pharmacy is the pharmacy which partnered with St. John's to get about 100 of our members and friends vaccinated against COVID. They have notified us that they are giving this additional shot to eligible people (cancer patients and immunocompromised people) who had the Moderna vaccine. You did not have to receive the Moderna vaccine at Auro Pharmacy to receive this additional shot. There is a questionnaire which must be completed to determine eligibility.

The St. John's Chapter of the Daughters of the King is once again sponsoring the Family Eldercare Summer Fan Drive during the month of August. This provides box fans for elderly residents of our community with potentially life-saving fans during the hot months of summer. As Sandra Ward (DOK president) told us, although residents may "have" air conditioning, they are often unable to afford to turn it on. If you would like to support this ministry, please make a donation of $22.00 either through cash or check (in an envelope marked "Fan Drive"), or through electronic giving (see button below or on our website). You can also purchase a fan yourself; please deliver to the church during regular office hours (10am-12pm Tuesday through Friday) or on Sunday.
